Allaah Ta’ala says:
﴿وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا فَعَلُوا فَاحِشَةً أَوْ ظَلَمُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ ذَكَرُوا اللَّه فَاسْتَغْفَرُوا لِذُنُوبِهِمْ وَمَنْ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَلَمْ يُصِرُّوا عَلَى مَا فَعَلُوا وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ ﴾.
<And those who, when they have committed Fahishah (illegal sexual intercourse etc.) or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins; – and none can forgive sins but Allah – And do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know.>
[Āl ʼImrān – 135]
Imam Saadi said:
Then Allaah mentions their excuses to their Lord about their crimes and sins so Allaah said:
﴿١٣٥﴾ ﴿والذين إذا فعلوا فاحشة أو ظلموا أنفسهم﴾؛
<<And those who, when they have committed Fahishah (illegal sexual intercourse etc.) or wronged themselves with evil,>
Meaning that they committed major evil deeds or other lesser ones, they hastened to repentance and seeking forgiveness, they remembered their Lord and what the sinful were promised and what the fearful of Allaah were promised and they asked Him for forgiveness for their sins, and a veiling of their flaws, along with them abandoning them and having regret for their deficiency.
This is why Allaah said:
﴿ولم يصروا على ما فعلوا وهم يعلمون﴾
<< [Āl ʼImrān – 135] And do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know. >>

قال الله تعالى:
﴿وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا فَعَلُوا فَاحِشَةً أَوْ ظَلَمُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ ذَكَرُوا الله فَاسْتَغْفَرُوا لِذُنُوبِهِمْ وَمَنْ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا الله وَلَمْ يُصِرُّوا عَلَى مَا فَعَلُوا وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ ﴾.
[Āl ʼImrān – 135]
قال إمام السعدي:
ثم ذكر اعتذارهم لربهم من جناياتهم وذنوبهم فقال:
﴿١٣٥﴾ ﴿والذين إذا فعلوا فاحشة أو ظلموا أنفسهم﴾؛
أي: صدر منهم أعمال سيئة كبيرة أو ما دون ذلك، بادروا إلى التوبة والاستغفار، وذكروا ربهم وما توعد به العاصين، ووعد به المتقين فسألوه المغفرة لذنوبهم، والستر لعيوبهم، مع إقلاعهم عنها وندمهم عليها، فلهذا قال: ﴿ولم يصروا على ما فعلوا وهم يعلمون﴾.
