Day 8 Allaah Looks at Your Hearts

Translated & Compiled

By

Abbas Abu Yahya

From Abu Hurairah –RadhiAllaahu anhu-  who said: the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam –  said:

‘Indeed Allaah does not look at your forms and your wealth, however, He looks at your hearts and your actions.’

[Saheeh Muslim]

In another wording:

‘Indeed Allaah does not look at your bodies nor at your forms, but looks at your hearts.’ He pointed to his chest.

An Explanation

Shaykh Muhammad Nasiruddeen Al-Albaani (d.1420 A.H.) commented in his introduction to his research of the book ‘Riyadh as-Saliheen’ said:

‘The extra wording ‘And your actions’ is very important because there are many people who misunderstand the hadeeth without this wording.

Therefore, when you order them with what they have been ordered with from the wise legislation (the Sharia), for example, growing the beard, leaving off from imitating the non-Muslims, and other similar duties from the Sharia, they reply to you saying that the main issue is what is in the heart.

They use this Hadeeth for their claim, without knowing this extra authentic wording, which shows that Allaah Tabaraka wa Ta’ala also looks at their actions. If those actions were righteous they would be accepted and if they were not, the actions would be rejected back to the person, as is indicated to in a number of texts, like the saying of the Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam :

‘Whoever innovates something in this matter of ours that which is not of it, then it will be rejected.’

[Collected by Bukhari and Muslim]

In reality it is not possible to view the righteousness of the heart except with the righteousness of actions, and nor righteousness of actions except with the righteousness of the heart.

Indeed the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – explained this beautifully in the Hadeeth of Nu’maan bin Basheer:

‘…..indeed there is a morsel of flesh, if it is righteous then the whole body is righteous and if it is corrupt then the whole body is corrupt, it is none other than the heart.’

[Collected by Bukhari and Muslim]

In another Hadeeth:

‘You must straighten your rows (in prayer) or Allaah will surely change your faces.’

[Collected by Abu Dawood & graded Hasan by Al-Albaani]

Meaning cause separation between your hearts.

Also the saying of the Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam :

‘Indeed Allaah is Beautiful and loves beauty.’

[collected by Ahmad & graded Saheeh by Al-Albaani in Saheehah no. 1626]

This hadeeth is about tangible, legislated beauty in contrast to what many people assume.

Shaykh Al-Albaani continues:

‘This -claim that it is a matter of the heart- contradicts many texts from the Book and the Sunnah which show the precedence and superiority of acts of worship in regards to Paradise, which is in relation to righteous deeds whether they are many or few.

From that is the saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

<< For all there will be degrees (or ranks) according to what they did.>>

[An’aam : 132]

Also, Allaah’s statement in the Hadeeth Qudsi :

‘…..O My worshippers, it is but your deeds that I collect up for you and then recompense you for them, so let him who finds good praise Allaah….’[2]

How can it be comprehendible that Allaah does not look at the actions just like Allaah looks at bodies and forms, which is a foundation for entry in to Paradise after having Eemaan, just as Allaah Ta’ala says:

<< enter Paradise, because of (the good) which you used to do (in the world).”>> [Nahl: 32]

So reflect how far Taqleed (blind following) takes a person away from being correct, and lands him in a valley of mistakes far away. This is only due to them turning away from the study of the Sunnah from its main original, authentic, reliable books.

And Allaah’s aid is needed.’

[Riyadh as-Saliheen p. 21-23]

Shaykh Al-Albaani also said:

‘Islaam has a concern with the inside and the outside and the connection between both of them.

Indeed Islaam requires from the Muslims to protect and preserve their Islaam, not only in their hearts but also in their bodies and their outward appearance, because there is no difference between the two.

Indeed the large majority of Islaamic writers always and continuously drone on about a correct reality which is that Islaam does not make a distinction between the soul and the body and it gives both of them their rights. This speech is correct, however, they are all duped into neglect that Islaam also does not forget that it is obligatory that the body also submits to Allaah, exactly like the heart  and that there is no distinction between the two. This is why if the body is not apparently submitting to Allaah then it is not possible that the inward of a person is also submitting to Allaah, and the opposite is also exactly true.

There are Ahadeeth which affirm this reality, and this reality has become well-known nowadays even among the non-Muslims, that the heart is connected with the outward and observable, and that the observable and outward is connected with the inward.

Islaam preceded all these scientists with this reality, unveiling this and that this is from the revelation from the heavens and this is not a strange matter, so who from among you has not heard the statement of the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa wa Ahlihi wa sallam – in the Hadeeth of Nu’maan bin Basheer, ‘Indeed the Halal is clear and the Haram is clear…..’ and the Prophet said at the end of the Hadeeth, ‘Truly in the body there is a morsel of flesh which, if it be whole, all the body is whole and which, if it be diseased, all of it is diseased. Truly it is the heart.’

Therefore, this is exactly like in medicine, just as the goodness of the body is due to the goodness of the heart according to physical medicine, and this is exactly the same from the teachings of the Sharia that the goodness of the body in relation to its good deeds is with the goodness of the heart, and the opposite is also exactly true for the heart.

The Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – reaffirmed this point in another Hadeeth, which has also been inverted over the Muslims due to their being far from the Sunnah. That is none other than the saying of the Prophet -alayhi as-Salat wa Salam:

‘Indeed Allaah does not look at your forms and your wealth, nor at your bodies, however, He looks at your hearts and your actions.’

Looking at a person is a matter which is external outward, which are the actions which originate from the person, and another matter which is internal, which is none other than the heart, ‘however, He looks at your hearts and your actions.’

So the deviancy which has afflicted the Muslims in this Hadeeth specifically is that many of them abandon the second part of what is looked at by Allaah Azz awa Jal, which are the actions, so they summarise the Hadeeth by saying ‘however, He looks at your hearts’ and that is it. Then this mistake spread among the people, so much so that when you advise a young person about his Religion about his prayer, about his fasting, he will say to you, ‘O my brother…the matter is not with the prayer, nor fasting but rather it is the heart, or a clean heart, etc.’

He lies against himself before he lies to the people because he does not believe in these realities which Islaam came with. So here we have the Messenger -alayhi as-Salam- saying, ‘however, He looks at your hearts and your actions.’ The Messenger did not only say, ‘He looks at your hearts’ but added ‘and your actions’.

The point of all that I spoke about is that Islaam connected the Sharia rulings some with others, and connected the Muslims some with others and to establish these rulings and to establish a Muslim community. When the Muslims turned away from the importance of the external and outward appearance due to the deviancy which afflicted them, we have become such that we are confused, should I give the Salam to such and such, I do not know if he is a Muslim since he has not expressed his Islaam on his body or his form or his actions.’
