Shaykh AbdulAzeez bin Abdullaah bin Baaz was asked:
“Lights are switched off in Masjids purposely so that there is only a dim light.
The Shaykh asked – “What is the reason for doing this?”
“They say it perfects their khushoo’
The questioner asked “Is this a Bida’ O Shaykh?”
He answered:
“This is wrong, explain to whoever does this that it is wrong.
[Taken from the Sharh of Bloogh al-Maraam Kitab at-Taharah]
- Shaykh Salih al-Fawzaan was asked:
“Is it permissible to switch lights off in the masjid in order to establish khushoo’?”
The Shaykh answered:
“No this is a Bida’, we do not switch the lights off during Taraweeh prayer, people need light in order to pray, this is a Bida’ and not permissible. Maybe this is something that the sufis do.”

The ruling for the person who cries during the supplication but does not cry whilst the Book of Allaah is being recited
Shaykh AbdulAzeez bin Abdullaah bin Baaz was asked:
“What is the ruling for the person who cries during the supplication but does not cry whilst the Book of Allaah is being recited?”
The Shaykh answered:
“This action of crying is not out of choice, he is moved by Dua (supplication) and not by verses from the Quran. However he should seek a cure for himself from this, he should have Khushoo in his recitation more than Khushooo in his Dua, as kushoo from recitation is more important. If he feels Kushoo due to recitation and supplication then that is also good because khushoo during supplication is also a reason for Dua being answered however, he must have more concern for recitation of the Qur’aan, as it is the speech of Allah, it contains guidance & light.
The Messenger of Allaah used to ponder & think about it whilst reciting as did the Companions may Allah be pleased with them and make them pleased, would cry when the Qur’aan would be recited.
This is why when the Prophet -SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam- asked Abdullaah bin Mas’ood: Recite the Qur’aan to me.
Abdullaah said: ‘How can I recite for you when it had ascended upon you?!
The Prophet said: ‘I like to listen to someone other than myself reciting it.’
So he proceeded to recite from the beginning of Soorah Nisa until he reached the saying of Allaah Ta’ala:
<<How (will it be) then, when We bring from each nation a witness and We bring you (O Muhammad) as a witness against these people? >> [Nisa: 41]
The Prophet said: ‘That is sufficient.’
Ibn Mas’ood said: ‘So I turned to him’ or he said: ‘I raised my head towards him and I saw that his eyes were shedding tears.’
So from that which is apparent he was crying in silence, and his crying was only apparent due to his tears.
Also the hadeeth from Abdullaah bin Ash-Shakheer, that he heard a sound like that of a boiling cauldron coming from the chest of the Prophet -SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam- due to crying.
So this illustrates the point that the Prophet -SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam- reached to the point of crying with sound however, the sound was not unpleasant.’
