False Khushoo

Hudayfah said: Beware of hypocritical Khushoo.’ day 26 Bitesize 1441

It was said: ‘What is hypocritical Khushoo?’

He replied:

أن ترى الجسد خاشعاً والقلب ليس بخاشع

 ‘That you see the body has Khushoo but the heart does not.’

[Madarij as-Salikeen 1/521]

Ibn Al-Qayyim -Rahimahullaah- said:

‘The difference between Khushoo’ which is upon Eemaan and Khushoo’ which is upon hypocrisy is that, Khushoo’ which is upon Eemaan is when the heart has Khushoo of Allaah regarding Allaah as Great and Magnificent and the heart also has reverence, respect and awe of Him, in addition it has modesty.

So, this heart is broken for sake of Allaah thus it is strengthened and merged through fear, shyness, love, modesty, and witnessing the blessings of Allaah  in addition to a person’s acknowledgment of his own crimes against Allaah. Due to this the heart will undeniably feel Khushoo, as will the limbs which will be followed by the heart.

As for hypocritical Khushoo, then it appears upon the limbs in a contrived and forced way, however, the heart does not have Khushoo.

Some of the Companions used to say: ‘I seek refuge with Allaah from (Khushoo an-Nifaaq) hypocritical Khushoo. It was asked of one of them, ‘What is hypocritical Khushoo?’ He said: ‘that the body is seen as having Khushoo yet the heart does not have it.’

As for the one who has Khushoo for Allaah, then he is a slave of Allaah who has extinguished the blazing-fires of his desires, and calmed the blazing smoke of it from his heart, his heart becomes clear and a great light illuminates it.

The desires of the soul die due to fear, reverence and humility which had previously caused him to be puffed up with pride, now the limbs are appeased and soothed, and the heart is calmed, and finds peace with Allaah and His remembrance with tranquility and calmness which descends  upon him from his Lord.

So he becomes humble in front of Allaah, humble and serene, because a person who is humble is similar to a piece of land which is stable so that water remains there.

Likewise, the humble heart has submissiveness and becomes tranquil just like a piece of land which is calm and composed upon which water flows and becomes settled upon it.

The sign of the worshipper is that he prostrates in front of his Lord acknowledging Allaah’s Magnificence and submitting, obediently in front of Him – he does not raise his head and continues upon this state until he meets Allaah….this is the Khushoo of Eemaan.

As for deceptive and hypocritical Khushoo (Khushoo Nifaaq), this is the state of a slave who tasks himself with making the limbs tranquil in a dishonest way, whilst showing off, his desires and wants possess the strength and freshness of youth, so he has Khushoo outwardly,  but in reality he is between a snake in a valley and a lion in the forest who are crouching on either side waiting for the prey.’

Imam Qurtubi said:

‘Whoever makes his Khushoo apparent for people more so than what is in his heart, then he has displayed hypocrisy which is beyond hypocrisy.

Sahl bin Abdullaah said:

a person cannot have Khushoo until every hair on his body has Khushoo, due to the saying of Allaah Tabaraka wa Ta’ala:

تَقْشَعِرُّ مِنْهُ جُلُودُ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ

<< The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it (when they recite it or hear it).>>

خشوع النفاق

قال حذيفة: إياكم وخشوع النفاق.

قيل: وما خشوع النفاق؟

قال: أن ترى الجسد خاشعاً والقلب ليس بخاشع (1).

قَالَ ابْنُ الْقَيِّمِ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى:

«وَالْفَرْقُ بَيْنَ خُشُوعِ الْإِيمَانِ وَخُشُوعِ النِّفَاقِ: أَنَّ خُشُوعَ الْإِيمَانِ هُوَ خُشُوعُ الْقَلْبِ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى بِالتَّعْظِيمِ وَالْإِجْلَالِ وَالْوَقَارِ وَالْمَهَابَةِ وَالْحَيَاءِ؛ فَيَنْكَسِرُ الْقَلْبُ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى كَسْرَةً مُلْتَئِمَةً مِنَ الْوَجَلِ وَالْخَجَلِ وَالْحُبِّ وَالْحَيَاءِ، وَشُهُودِ نِعَمِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى، وَجِنَايَاتِهِ هُوَ؛ فَيَخْشَعُ الْقَلْبُ لَا مَحَالَةَ، فَيَتْبَعُهُ خُشُوعُ الْجَوَارِحِ.

 وَأَمَّا خُشُوعُ النِّفَاقِ فَيَبْدُو عَلَى الْجَوَارِحِ تَصَنُّعًا وَتَكَلُّفًا، وَالْقَلْبُ غَيْرُ خَاشِعٍ و كان بعض الصحابة يقول : أعوذ بالله من خشوع النفاق ، قيل له : وما خشوع النفاق ؟ قال : أن يرى الجسد خاشعا والقلب غير خاشع . فَالْخَاشِعُ لِلَّهِ عَبْدٌ قَدْ خَمَدَتْ نِيرَانُ شَهْوَتِهِ، وَسَكَنَ دُخَانُهَا عَنْ صَدْرِهِ، فَانْجَلَى الصَّدْرُ وَأَشْرَقَ فِيهِ نُورُ الْعَظَمَةِ، فَمَاتَتْ شَهَوَاتُ النَّفْسِ؛ لِلْخَوْفِ وَالْوَقَارِ الَّذِي حُشِيَ بِهِ. وَخَمَدَتِ الْجَوَارِحُ، وَتَوَقَّرَ الْقَلْبُ وَاطْمَأَنَّ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَذَكَرَهُ بِالسَّكِينَةِ الَّتِي نَزَلَتْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ رَبِّهِ، فَصَارَ مُخْبِتًا لَهُ والمخبت المطمئن ، فإن الخبت من الأرض ما اطمأن فاستنقع فيه الماء ، فكذلك القلب المخبت قد خشع واطمأن كالبقعة المطمئنة من الأرض التي يجري إليها الماء فيستقر فيها ، وعلامته أن يسجد بين يدي ربه إجلالا له وذلا وانكسارا بين يديه سجدة لا يرفع رأسه عنها حتى يلقاه . فهذا خشوع الإيمان ، وأما القلب المتكبر فإنه قد اهتز بتكبره وربا فهو كبقعة رابية من الأرض لا يستقر عليها الماء وأما وَأَمَّا التَّمَاوُتُ وَخُشُوعُ النِّفَاقِ فَهُوَ حَالٌ عِنْدَ تَكَلُّفِ إِسْكَانِ الْجَوَارِحِ؛ تَصَنُّعًا وَمُرَاءَاةً، وَنَفْسُهُ فِي الْبَاطِنِ شَابَّةٌ طَرِيَّةٌ ذَاتُ شَهَوَاتٍ وَإِرَادَاتٍ، فَهُوَ يَخْشَعُ فِي الظَّاهِرِ، وَحَيَّةُ الْوَادِي وَأَسَدُ الْغَابَةِ رَابِضٌ بَيْنَ جَنْبَيْهِ يَنْتَظِرُ الْفَرِيسَةَ».

تفسير القرطبي

فَمَنْ أَظْهَرَ لِلنَّاسِ خُشُوعًا فَوْقَ مَا فِي قلبه فإنما أظهر نفاقا علو نِفَاقٍ قَالَ سَهْلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ لَا يَكُونُ خَاشِعًا حَتَّى تَخْشَعَ كُلُّ شَعْرَةٍ عَلَى جَسَدِهِ لِقَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى” تَقْشَعِرُّ مِنْهُ جُلُودُ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ” «2» [الزمر: 23]
