Day 16 – Intending to Do a Deed

Translated & Compiled

By

Abbas Abu Yahya

From Ibn Abbas -Radi Allaahu anhu- that the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam-, among the sayings he relates from his Lord is:

‘Allaah has written down the good deeds and the bad ones. Then He explained it [by saying that]: ‘Whoever intended to perform a good deed and did not do it, then Allaah writes it down with Himself as a full good deed, but if he had intended it and had done it then Allaah writes it down with Himself as from ten good deeds to seven hundred times, or many times over. But if he has intended a bad deed and has not done it, Allaah writes it down with Himself as a full good deed, but if he has intended it and has done it, Allaah writes it down as one bad deed.’

From Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

In another narration:

From Khareem bin Fatik al-Asdee that the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – said:

‘People are of four types, and actions are of six types.
People are of
1) those who will be enriched in the Dunyaa and the Hereafter.
2) those who are enriched in the Dunyaa and constrained upon in the Hereafter.
3) those who are constrained in the Dunyaa and enriched in the Hereafter.
4) and those who are wretched in the Dunyaa and the Hereafter.
And actions are:
– The recompense for two obligatory ones.
– The reward with like for like.
– The reward is ten times as much.
– The reward is seven hundred times as much.
As for
– The recompense for two obligatory ones: whoever dies as a believing Muslim not associating anyone with Allaah then Paradise becomes obligatory for him and whoever dies as a non-Muslim then the Hell-fire becomes obligatory upon him.
– The reward with like for like: Whoever intends to do a good deed but does not do it, and Allaah knows that his heart felt the deed and he would have striven to do it, then it is written as a good deed. Whoever only intends to do a bad deed, then it is not written for him, and whoever does it then it is written as one and it is not multiplied.

Whoever does a good action then he gets ten times as much reward.

And whoever gives wealth in the way of Allaah then he gets seven hundred times as much reward.

Hastening to Perform a Good Deed

Sufyaan Ath-Thawri said:

‘When you decide and intend to give charity, or to be kind or any righteous deed then hasten in performing it straight away at that time before Shaytaan comes between you and performing the good deed.’

[Hileeyat al-Awliyaah 7/62]

Shamsuddeen Muhammad bin Abee Bakr Ibn Qayyim aj-Jawzeeyah (d. 751 A.H.) -Rahimahullaah- said:

‘Precedence between righteous deeds according to Allaah is in relation to the precedence between Eemaan, sincerity, love and what is connected to these matters in the heart.

Therefore, a complete righteous deed is one which completely cancels out a bad deed, and a deficient one is in accordance to its self.
With these two principles, many problems are solved, and these two principles are:

Precedence between righteous deeds is in accordance to the true realities of Eemaan in hearts, and good deeds expiate evil deeds depending upon their completeness and their deficiency.’

[Al-Wabil as-Sayib]

Al-Hafidh Ibn Rajab said:

‘The multiplying of reward is in accordance to the completeness of one’s Islaam and completeness of the strength of Ikhlaas in that action.’
