From Abul Darda who conveyed that the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam said:

‘Whoever came to his bed and he intends to get up and pray during the night, and he is over come with sleep until the morning, then the reward for what he intended is written for him. His sleep was charity for him from his Lord.’

An Explanation

The Ruling for the one who intended to pray during the night but was not able to

By Shaykh Abdul Azeez bin Abdullaah bin Baz -Rahimahullaah- (d. 1420 A.H.)

Question:

O respected Shaykh, if a person intends, whether it is a man or woman to pray during the night and is not able, is reward written for what was intended?

The Answer:

‘Yes, the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam said:

‘When a slave of Allaah becomes ill or travels, then Allaah writes the reward for him for what he used to do when he was healthy and a resident.’

Likewise, if he sleeps then he has not been negligent and will have the reward of praying during the night, however, he can pray it during the day time, he prays what he missed out on.

When the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam was prevented from praying his usual amount during the night by sleep or illness, then he would pray during the day in comparison to what he used to do during the night. This is the Sunnah.

When a person is busied by an illness, or sleep, so he does not pray his Witr prayer during the night, or read his usual amount of Qur’aan during the night, then he can do this during the day before Dhuhr prayer, this is better and he will get the full reward.

Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih al-Uthaymeen said:

‘It is upon a Muslim to have an intention present, and it is necessary in all matters of worship. The intention is made up of three matters:

1 – The intention for worship

2 – That the intention is that it is for Allaah

3 – That he did it to fulfil Allaah’s command.
