Ibn al-Qayyim -Rahimahullaah- said:

‘The Messenger -SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam- would break up his recitation, he would stop at each Ayaah, so he would say: <<All praise belongs to Allaah the Lord of all that exists>> and stop, <<the Most Kind the Most Merciful>> and stop, <<the Only Owner of the Day of Resurrection>>.

Zuhri mentions: ‘that the recitation of the Messenger of Allaah -SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam- was Ayaah by Ayaah’ and this is what is better, stopping at the beginning of the Ayaat, even if it is connected to what is after it.

Some of the reciters had the opinion of reciting, and not stopping at every Ayaah to convey the full meaning of the objectives and purposes of those Ayaat and only stopping at the end of those, however, following the guidance of the Prophet -SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam – and his Sunnah is foremost.

From those who mentioned this was al-Bayhaqi in ‘Shu’ab al-Emaan’ and others, and he held that the strongest opinion is stopping at the beginning of the Ayaah even if it was linked in some way to what came after it.’

Shaykh Al-Albaani said:

Reciting Ayaah individually

Then the Prophet would recite ‘Fatihah’ and he would break up each Ayaah individually (1): <<In the Name of Allaah the Most Kind the Most Merciful>> [then he would stop, then he would say:] <<All praise belongs to Allaah the Lord of all that exists>>, [then he would stop, then he would say:] << the Most Kind the Most Merciful>> [then he would stop, then he would say:] <<The Only Owner of the Day of Resurrection>> and like this he would continue to the end of the Soorah. Also, all his recitation was like this; he would stop at the beginning of an Ayaah and he would not link it to the Ayaah after it.’

Shaykh Al-Albaani in his research of this said:

‘This is narrated from Umm Salamah -RadhiAllaahu Unhaa, collected by Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawood, and from him al-Bayhaqi, Tirmidhi, Daraqutni, al-Hakim and Al-Albaani graded it Saheeh in Irwaa al-Ghaleel no. 343.’

[Taken from the ‘Asal Sifat as-Salah an-Nabi -SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam- 1/293]

Shaykh Al-Albaani said:

‘That most of the reciters of our time have left this Sunnah, and we seek Allaah’s aid.’

[Irwaa al-Ghaleel 2/60 no. 343]
