Placing the Right Hand upon the Left Hand in the Prayer

Al-Hafidh Ibn Hajr -Rahimahullaah- (d. 852 A.H.) said:
‘The scholars said, ‘the wisdom regarding this position is that it is a humble, submissive 
form. It is preventive from playing and moving around and is closer to Khushoo.’

Imam Ahmad -Rahimahullaah- (d. 241 A.H.) was asked about the intent of placing the right hand upon the left [in the prayer]. He replied:
‘It is humbling oneself in front of the All-Mighty.’

At-Teebbee -Rahimahullaah- (d. 743 A.H.) said:
‘It is necessary for the one standing in front of al-Malik al-Jabbar (The King and The Enforcer) not to neglect the conditions of the manners [of prayer], rather he puts one hand upon the other and tilts his head down, as he would in front of kings.’

Ibn Khuzaimah (d. 311 A.H.) narrates from Wa’il bin Hujr -RadhiAllaahu anhu- who said:
I prayed with the Messenger of Allaah -SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam- and he placed his right hand upon his left hand upon his chest.’

Shaykh Abdul Azeez Bin Baz – May Allaah have mercy upon him- (d. 1420 A.H.) said:
‘It is more befitting to concentrate in the prayer and have khushoo, and place the hands on the chest reflecting upon what the Imaam is reciting. This is due to the saying of Allah Azza wa Jal:
وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنْصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
{{ When the Qur’aan is being recited, then listen to it and remain silent, perhaps you will have mercy sent upon you }}
Also the saying of Allah Subhaanu:
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ () الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ
{{ Indeed the believers are successful. Those who offer their Salat (prayers) with all humility and full submissiveness. }}

وضع اليد اليمنى على اليسرى
وضع اليمنى على اليسرى على الصدر :
قال الإمام ابن حجر العسقلاني – رحمه الله -: قال العلماء: الحكمة في هذه الهيئة أنه صفة السائل الذليل، وهو أمنعُ مِن العبَث، وأقرب إلى الخشوع.
ومن اللطائف قول بعضهم: القلب موضع النية، والعادة أن مَن احترز على حفظ شيءٍ جعل يديه عليه؛ (فتح الباري – لابن حجر العسقلاني – جـ 2 – صـ 263).
قال ابن حجر : قال العلماء : الحكمة في هذه الهيئة أنها صفة السائل الذليل وهو أمنع من العبث وأقرب إلى الخشوع . فتح الباري 2/224
سُئل الإمام أحمد بن حنبل – رحمه الله – عن المراد من وضع اليد اليمنى على اليسرى، فقال: هو ذلٌّ بين يدي عزيزٍ؛ (الخشوع في الصلاة – ابن رجب الحنبلي – صـ 21).
قال الطِّيبي – رحمه الله -: في هذا الحديث تنبيهٌ على أن القائم بين يدي الملك الجبار ينبغي ألا يُهمِلَ شريطة الأدب، بل يضع يده على يده، ويطأطئ رأسه، كما يصنع بين يدَيِ الملوك؛ (مرقاة المفاتيح – علي الهروي – جـ 2 – صـ 658).
روى ابنُ خزيمة عن وائل بن حُجرٍ رضي الله عنه، قال: صليتُ مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، ووضع يده اليمنى على يده اليسرى على صدره؛ (حديث صحيح) (إرواء الغليل للألباني جـ 1 رقم 352).
