What is the reason for not having Khushoo in the prayer?

Question:
What is the reason for not having Khushoo in the prayer? How can a person achieve it?
The Answer:
‘Allaah the magnificent and most High says:
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ
《Successful indeed are the believers. Those who offer their Salah (prayers) with all humility and full submissiveness. 》
[al-Muminoon: 1-2]
Khushoo has means and not having Khushoo has reasons. Having Khushoo has means: it is humility and submission in front of Allaah and that you remember that you are in front of Allaah and you are standing in front of Him, as in the authentic hadeeth, let not one of you touch and play with stones, because he is in discourse with his Lord, in another wording: indeed mercy is facing him.
Indeed when a person stands in the prayer then he is in discourse with his Lord, so he remembers this great position and that he is in front of Allaah.
Therefore, he should have Khushoo for Allaah and turn towards his prayer. He remembers the greatness of Allaah, and that he is in front of the Greatest, the Almighty. He should turn towards his prayer, and he should focus on his recitation and his Sajood and Ruku. He should remember everything which necessitates this status, and one being neglectful about Allaah makes his prayer deficient. So, it is necessary for a person to remember this so that neglect vanishes and whisperings disappear, and he asks his Lord for aid in achieving Khushoo in his Sajdah.
Likewise, at the end of the Tashahuad you can say:
‘O Allaah aid me upon Khushoo, O Allaah make Khushoo easy for me, O Allaah protect me from Shaytaan and the evil of my own self, so a person should request this from his Lord and seek aid with Him.’

أسباب الخشوع في الصلاة
السؤال:
ما هو السبب في عدم الخشوع في الصلاة؟ وكيف يتخلص الإنسان من ذلك؟
الجواب:
الله يقول جل وعلا: قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ [المؤمنون:1، 2] والخشوع له أسباب وعدمه له أسباب.
للخشوع أسباب: وهو الخضوع بين يدي الله وأن تتذكر أنك بين يدي الله، وأنك واقف بين يديه ، كما في الحديث الصحيح لا يمسح أحدكم الحصاة فإنه يناجي ربه، وفي اللفظ الآخر: فإن الرحمة تواجهه.
فالإنسان إذا قام في الصلاة فإنه يناجي ربه، فيتذكر هذا المقام العظيم، وأنه بين يدي الله، فليخشع لله وليقبل على صلاته، وليتذكر عظمة الله ، وأنه بين أعظم عظيم ، وليقبل على صلاته، وليقبل على قراءته وعلى سجوده وركوعه، ويتذكر كل ما يلزم في هذا المقام، وأن غفلته عن الله تنقص صلاته، فينبغي له أن يتذكر حتى تزول عنه الغفلة وتزول عنه الوساوس، ويسأل ربه العون على هذا في سجوده، وفي آخر التحيات يقول: اللهم أعني على الخشوع، اللهم يسر الخشوع، اللهم أعذني من الشيطان ومن شر نفسي، يسأل ربه يستعين به .
