Shaykh ul Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah (d. 728 A.H.) – Rahimahullaah- said:
‘When we want to clarify and explain what the Madhab of the Salaf is, then we mention two ways:
Firstly: indeed we mention what is easy from their statements with their actual words, and also from what was narrated from them by the People of knowledge with reputable Asaneed (chains of narrations).
Secondly: indeed we mention those who convey the Madhab of the Salaf from all the groups of the Muslims, from the groups of the four scholars of Fiqh. From the people of Hadeeth and asceticism, from the people of rhetoric and debate like the Ashari and others.
So the Madhab of the Salaf becomes accepted with the Ijmaa (consensus) of all the groups and by being Mutawatir (many recurring chains of narrations).
We do not affirm the Madhab of the Salaf by just claiming to be correct and the mistakes by those who oppose us, as do the people of Bida.’

علماء السلف هم أعدل الناس
ويقول شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية:
فإنَّا لَمَّا أردنا أن نبيِّن مذهب السلف
ذكرنا طريقينِ:
أحدهما: أنَّا ذكرنا ما تيسَّر من ذكر ألفاظهم،
ومَن روى ذلك عنهم
مِن أهل العلم بالأسانيد المعتبرة.
والثاني: أنَّا ذكرنا مَن نقل مذهب السلف
من جميع طوائف المسلمين
من طوائف الفقهاء الأربعة،
ومن أهل الحديث والتصوف،
وأهل الكلام كالأشعري وغيره،
فصار مذهب السلف مقبولًا
بإجماع الطوائف وبالتواتر،
لم نُثبِته بمجرد دعوى الإصابة لنا والخطأ لمخالفنا،
كما يفعل أهل البدع.

*علمائے سلف سب سے زیادہ عادل لوگ ہیں۔*
شيخ الإسلام ابن تیمیہ رحمه الله کہتے ہیں: “جب ہم نے سلف کا عقیدہ واضح کرنا چاہا تو ہم نے دو طریقوں کا تذکرہ کیا:
پہلا: ہم نے ان کے اس کلام کا تذکرہ کیا جو دستیاب تھا، اور ساتھ ہی ساتھ ان اہل علم کا تذکرہ بھی کیا جنہوں نے ان سے معتبر سندوں کے ساتھ (اس کلام کو) روایت کیا ہے۔
دوسرا: ہم نے مسلمانوں کے تمام فرقوں; چار فقہی طوائف، اہل حدیث، اہل تصوف، اہل کلام جیسے اشعری وغیرہ میں سے ان لوگوں کا تذکرہ کیا جنہوں نے سلف کے مذهب کو نقل کیا، اور اسطرح سلف کا عقیدہ تمام فرقوں کے اجماع اور تواتر کے ساتھ مقبول ہو گیا، ہم نے محض یہ دعویٰ کر کے اسے ثابت نہیں کیا کہ ہم صحیح ہے اور ہمارے مخالفین غلط ہیں، جیسا کہ اہل بدعت کرتے ہیں۔”
