The Guarantee of Paradise

The Guarantee of Paradise

Translated & Compiled

By

Abbas Abu Yahya

From Abu Umamah al-Bahily who said I heard the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- saying:

‘Ensure me six things and I will ensure Paradise for you: when one of you speaks then he should not lie, when he is given a trust then he should not be treacherous, and when he makes a promise then he should not break it, and turn your sight away from evil things, and hold back your hands from harming, and protect your private parts.’

[Collected by Ibn Adee in ‘al-Kamil’, Tabarani, Silafi in ‘Mu’ajam as-Safr, Ibn al-Jawzi in ‘Dham al-Hawa’ & graded Hasan by Al-Albaani in Silsilah as-Saheehah No. 1525]

From Ubadah from the Prophet :

‘Guarantee me six things in yourselves and I will guarantee you Paradise: be truthful when you speak and fulfil your promises, fulfil your trusts, protect your private parts and lower your gaze and keep your hands back from harming anyone.’

[Collected by Ahmad, Ibn Hibban, al-Hakim, al-Kharaiti, Tabarani, al-Bayhaqi & graded Saheeh due to its supporting narrations by Al-Albaani in Silsilah Saheehah no. 1470]

Explanation

Ibn AbdulBarr said in his explanation of this hadeeth:

‘Guarantee me six things’, from these characteristics ‘in yourselves’

that you will continuously perform them,

‘and I will guarantee you Paradise’.

‘be truthful when you speak’ – Meaning do not lie in any of your speech. The exception is if there is a stronger benefit than the benefit of the truth in a very specific matter.

‘and fulfil your promises, fulfil your trusts,’ – Al-Bayhaqi said: what enters into this is what a believer performs with his Eemaan; from acts of worship, rulings, also what is upon him of responsibility of the right over his soul,  his wife,  his family and offspring, his Muslim brother, from advising him, the rights of whom he possess, or his master, or his freed slaves. So fulfilling the trust in all of these matters is obligatory.

Protect O men and women, ‘your private parts’ from committing that which is Haram, in order that the person who keeps away from the Haram, can achieve the praise of Allaah the most High, where He said:

《the men and the women who guard their chastity (from haram illicit acts)》[Ahzab: 35]

‘and lower your gaze’ – Prevent your sight from looking at that what it is not permissible to look at.

‘and keep your hands back from harming anyone.’ – Prevent your hands from doing that which is not permissible according to the Sharia. So, do not hit the one who it is not permissible to hit. Do not use your hands to consume food or drink which is Prohibited etc.

Whosoever achieves all these matters then he has achieved the rank of al-Istiqama (being steadfast), which has been ordered with in the Qur’aan, and to have the manners of the people of Eemaan.’

[Faidh al Qadeer by al- Manawee 1/683]

1st Characteristic – Being Truthful

Abdullaah bin Mas’ood said that the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘Be truthful, indeed Siddq (truthfulness) guides to Birr (good deeds) and indeed good deeds guide to Paradise. A man continues to be truthful and is careful to be truthful until he is written with Allaah as a truthful person. And beware of lying, indeed lying leads to evil deeds, and indeed evil deeds lead to the Hell-Fire. A man continues to lie and is not careful about lying until he is written with Allaah as a liar.’

[Collected by Bukhari & Muslim]

2nd Characteristic – Fulfil your Promises

Allaah Ta’ala said:

<<[those who] fulfil their promise when they make a promise>> [Baqarah: 177]

3rd Characteristic – fulfil your trusts

Fadalah bin Ubayd  said that the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘Shall I not inform you of the believer? The person that the people feel secure with their wealth and their own selves.  The Muslim is the one who the people are secure from his tongue, and his hand. The Mujahid is the one who strives against his own self in the obedience of Allaah, and the Muhajir is the one who migrates away from his mistakes and sins.’

[ Collected by Imam Ahmad, Albaani said its Isnaad is Saheeh in ‘Silsilah Saheehah’ No. 549]

4th Characteristic – protect your private parts

Allaah Ta’ala said:

<<And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts, from illegal sexual acts), Except from their wives or (the captives and slaves) that their right hands possess, for then, they are free from blame; But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors>>  [al-Muminoon: 5-7]

5th Characteristic – lower your gaze

Allaah Ta’ala said:

<<Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.). That is purer for them. Verily, Allaah is All-Aware of what they do.

And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.).>>  [Noor: 30-31]

6th Characteristic – keep your hands back from harming anyone

Not harming people

From Abu Dharr Radi Allaahu anhu who said: ‘I asked O Messenger of Allaah which is the best of the actions?’

The Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam said:

‘Belief in Allaah and striving in the path of Allaah.’

I asked : ‘If I did not do this?’

He –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam-  said:

‘Help the weak or do good for a person who cannot work for himself.’

I asked: ‘What if I was too weak to carry out some good deeds?’

He –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam-  said:

‘Do not cause/perpetrate your evil on to the people; indeed it is Sadaqah (charity) from yourself to yourself.’

[Bukhari  Kitaab  al-Raqeeq (Fath al-Bari 5/148) & Muslim]

Abdullaah bin al-Mubarak -Rahimullaah- defined Husan al-Khulaq (good mannerisms) as:

‘Doing good deeds for others, preventing harm and smiling at people.’

[Durar Saneeyah bifawaid 40 Nawawi p.73]
