The First Matter to Be Taken away is Khushoo

From Abu Darda -RadhiAllaahu anhu- from the Prophet -SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam- who said:
“أولُ شيءٍ يُرفَع من هذه الأمةِ الخشوعُ، حتى لا ترى فيها خاشعاً”.
‘The first matter which will be raised (taken away) from this Ummah is Khushoo so much so that you do not see a person with Khushoo.’
[Collected by Tabarani, & Al-Albaani graded it Hasan Saheeh in Saheeh Targheeb no. 542]
Al-Manawi said:
‘(The first matter which will be raised (taken away) from the people is Khushoo) meaning: the Khushoo of al-Eemaan which is the soul of worship and it is fear or tranquility or that which occurs in the heart, so what appears from the heart is the tranqulity of the limbs. Some of them said, adhere to al-Khushoo since Allaah Ta’ala did not bring you into existence except as one who has Khushoo, so do not turn away from what Allaah brought you into existence upon, indeed al-Khushoo is the state of modesty, and all of modesty is goodness.’

From Hudayfah -RadhiAllaahu anhu- who said:
‘The first matter that will be lost from your Deen is al-Khushoo, and the last matter which will be lost from your Deen will be the prayer.’

Not Knowing Khushoo
From Ibn Juraij who said, I asked Atta:
‘Should I hold my left forearm with the palm of my right hand and the right forearm with my left hand?’
But he criticized that and said: ‘Indeed the prayer is Khushoo, Allaah said: <<Those who have Khushoo in their prayer>> [Muminoon:2] you have known what is Ruku, Sajood and Takbeer but most of the people do not know al-Khushoo.’

From Thaabit, from Anas -RadhiAllaahu anhu- who said: Indeed I will not be neglectful in that I will lead you in prayer as I saw the Prophet -SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam- pray with us.
Thaabit said:
‘Anas would do something which I did not see you do, he would stand after raising his head from the Ruku so much so that a person would say, has he forgotten to continue the prayer, likewise the sitting between the two Sajdas so much so that a person would say, has he forgotten to continue the prayer.’

أوَّلُ شَيْءٍ يُرْفَعُ الْخُشُوع
عن أبي الدرداءِ رضي الله عنه عن النبي – صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ – قال:
“أولُ شيءٍ يُرفَع من هذه الأمةِ الخشوعُ، حتى لا ترى فيها خاشعاً”.
رواه الطبراني بإسناد حسن. [حكم الألباني] (صحيح) انظر حديث رقم: 2569 في صحيح الجامع
قَالَ المناوي
(أول مَا يرفع من النَّاس الْخُشُوع) أَي خشوع الْإِيمَان الَّذِي هُوَ روح الْعِبَادَة وَهُوَ الْخَوْف أَو السّكُون أَو معنى يقوم بِالْقَلْبِ فَيظْهر عَنهُ سُكُون الْأَطْرَاف قَالَ بَعضهم الزم الْخُشُوع فَإِن الله تَعَالَى مَا أوجدك إِلَّا خَاشِعًا فَلَا تَبْرَح عَمَّا أوجدك عَلَيْهِ فَإِن الْخُشُوع حَالَة حَيَاء وَالْحيَاء خير كُله

عن حذيفة قال: أول ما تفقدون من دينكم الخشوع، وآخر ما تفقدون من دينكم الصلاة.

عن ابن جريج، قال: قلت لعطاء : أقبض بكفي اليمنى على عضدي اليسرى، وكفي اليسرى على عضدي اليمنى ؟ فكرهه وقال: ” إنما الصلاة خشوع، قال الله : {الذين هم في صلاتهم خاشعون} [المؤمنون: 2] فقد عرفتم الركوع والسجود والتكبير، ولا يعرف كثير من الناس الخشوع ” .
تعظيم قدر الصلاة – محمد بن نصر المروزى
عَنْ ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : إِنِّي لَا آلُو أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ بِكُمْ كَمَا رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي بِنَا، قَالَ ثَابِتٌ : كَانَ أَنَسٌ يَصْنَعُ شَيْئًا لَمْ أَرَكُمْ تَصْنَعُونَهُ : كَانَ إِذَا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ مِنَ الرُّكُوعِ قَامَ حَتَّى يَقُولَ الْقَائِلُ : قَدْ نَسِيَ. وَبَيْنَ السَّجْدَتَيْنِ حَتَّى يَقُولَ الْقَائِلُ : قَدْ نَسِيَ.
