Day 6  – Sincerity is Eemaan

Translated & Compiled

By

Abbas Abu Yahya

From Abu Faras -a man who was from the Asslami tribe – who said:

‘A man called out and said:

‘O Messenger of Allaah! What is Eemaan?’

The Messenger said:

‘al-Ikhlaas (sincerity).’

In another wording: the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam said:

‘Ask me whatever you wish.’

A man called out: O Messenger of Allaah! What is Islaam?’

The Messenger said:

‘Establishing the prayer and giving Zakat.’

The man said: ‘Then what is al-Eemaan?’

The Messenger said:

‘Al-Ikhlaas (Sincerity).’

The man said then what is al-Yaqeen (certainty)?

The Messenger said:

‘Affirmation and belief.’

An Explanation

Ikhlaas & Ihsaan

Sincerity & Kindness

Shaykh AbdurRahman bin Nasir ala Sa’adi  -Rahimullaah-  (d. 1376 A.H.) said:

‘Allaah Ta’ala connects as-Salat (prayer) and Zakaat abundantly in the Qur’aan.

This is because the prayer is comprised of having Ikhlaas (sincerity) for the One worshipped.

Zakaat and spending comprises of beneficence to His worshippers.

The sign of happiness of a worshipper is his Ikhlaas (sincerity) to the One worshipped and his endeavour to benefit the creation, Just as the sign for the distress and misery of a slave of Allaah is the absence of him having these two matters, not having sincerity or  being good.’

[Tafseer Saadi p.41]

An Explanation of the Ayaah:

<< And they were not commanded (in their scriptures) except to worship aa(alone), being sincere to Him in religious devotion, being upright and inclined (to truth) and to establish the prayer and to give obligatory charity. And that is the upright, correct religion.>>

By Shaykh Muhammad Nasiruddeen Al-Albaani (d. 1420 A.H.) said:

‘In reality this Ayaah is a foundation for Tawheed (Singling out Allaah Alone for worship). This foundation which some of the scholars of research label as Tawheed al-Ibadah.

It is clear from this Ayaah << And they were not commanded (in their scriptures) except to worship Allaah (alone), being sincere to Him in religious devotion. >> that they were not commanded except to worship Allaah alone without associating partners with Him.

If a Muslim did not single out his Lord with worship, even though this Tawheed al-Ibadah cannot be correct unless it is sincerely for Allaah -Azza wa Jal- with complete sincerity, free from any doubts about wanting and intending anything other than Allaah, if that is from wanting status or wealth or anything which would not lead to worshipping Allaah -Azza wa Jal- alone without associating partners to him.

Therefore, this Ayaah, << And they were not commanded (in their scriptures) except to worship Allāh (alone), being sincere to Him in religious devotion, being upright and inclined (to truth)>> in my opinion also includes an indication to the two testifications: La illaha illa Allaah Muhammad Rasool Allaah (there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah).

  • The first part of the testification, is testifying to single out Allaah Alone, which includes like we mentioned the worship of Allaah Alone without associating partners to Him.
  • The second part of the testification includes following the Messenger -alayhi as-Salam- in that which he commanded with.

So when Allaah says in this Ayaah:

<< And they were not commanded (in their scriptures) except to….>> they were commanded either by the way of the Book or by the way of the Sunnah, either by the way of having Emaan in Allaah Alone without associating anything with Allaah, or by way of following the Messenger sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallamalone, also there should be no associating anyone in following the Messenger.

The Ayaah indicates to the two testifications: the first part of the testification is in the statement of Allaah: << And they were not commanded (in their scriptures) except to>> this is because ‘the command’ as it comes from Allaah Tabaraka wa Ta’ala likewise, many a time it comes from the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam.  A person’s Islaam cannot be complete except with these two testifications which include worship of Allaah alone without associating partners with Him, from one angle and worship of Allaah by following the Messenger sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallambecause he was the one who brought ‘the command’, either directly from Allaah or from himself which he received by way of revelation which is well known in the Book and the Sunnah.

Therefore, the statement of Allaah Ta’ala:

<< And they were not commanded (in their scriptures) except to worship Allaah (alone), being sincere to Him in religious devotion.>>

Along with this noble Ayaah comprises of exhibiting the obligation of sincerity of religion and worship of Allaah Azza wa Jal- it also has an indication to Tawheed al-Ibadah and Tawheed of the Messenger sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallamin following him in worshipping Allaah.’
