The Dua in Ruku with Khushoo’

‘From Ali -RadhiAllaahu Anhu- when the Prophet would perform Ruku he would say :

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ رَكَعْتُ، وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ، وَلَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ، ‌خَشَعَ ‌لَكَ ‌سَمْعِي، ‌وَبَصَرِي، وَمُخِّي، وَعَظْمِي، وَعَصَبِي وما استقلَّت به قدمي…..

‘O Allaah I have performed Ruku for You, and I have believed in You, I have submitted myself to You, my hearing and sight have Khushoo (Reverence & Humility) for You and likewise my brain, my bones, my veins and what my feet carry of my body…….’

Allaahumma Laka Rakatu wa bika Amantu wa laka aslamtu Khashya laka Sama’ee, wa Basari, wa Mukhee wa Athamee, wa Assabee wa mastaqalat beehee Qadamee……

Shaykh Al-Albaani commented:

‘This is a part of a hadeeth from Ali -RadhiAllaahu anhu- who said: ‘the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam would begin his prayer with saying Allaahu akbar, then he would say: ‘I have directed my face towards You…..’ to the end of the narration. And in this narration Ali said: ‘and when he would perform Ruku he would say….’

‘O Allaah I have performed Ruku for You, and I have believed in You, I have submitted myself to You, my hearing and sight have Khushoo (Reverence & Humility) for You and likewise my brain, my bones, my veins and what my feet carry of my body…….’

The meaning is:

‘O Allaah I have performed Ruku for You – means, I have submitted myself only for You and not anyone else. As for the context of the word ‘Khasha’, then it means humbled, and as for the word submitted then it means in the context of my hearing and other senses and limbs which are not related to the matters of understanding and effect; this is an indirect expression to show complete Khushoo’ and submission, meaning that one reaches the upmost limit of these matters, so much so that its affects appear upon the limbs, and they then have reverence and humility for their Lord.’ From Sindhi.

Shaykh ul Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah said:

‘It is known that the Khushoo in the Ruku is tranquillity and lowering oneself. This is why the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam used to say whilst in Ruku :

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ رَكَعْتُ وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ وَلَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ

خَشَعَ لَكَ سَمْعِي وَبَصَرِي وَمُخِّي وَعَقْلِي وَعَصَبِي

 ‘O Allaah I have performed Ruku for You, and I have believed in You, I have submitted myself to You, my hearing and sight have Khushoo (Reverence & Humility) for You and likewise my brain, my intellect and my veins’. Collected by Muslim[1] in his book ‘Saheeh Muslim’. The Prophet described his self having Khushoo whilst in the state of Ruku, because the person in Ruku is tranquil and humble.’

Abul-Abbas Ahmad bin Umar Al-Qurtubi (656 A.H.) said:

‘As for the Prophet saying: ‘my hearing and sight have Khushoo (Reverence & Humility) for You and likewise my brain, my bones and my nerves and veins,’ this means that every limb has taken a portion of submission and humbling to Allaah, which means it has tranquillity and has a need of Allaah, and even though the foundation of Khushoo’ is in the heart, however, its fruits appear upon the limbs and parts of the body, and this is why it is called Khushoo’, like Allaah Ta’ala said: << that you see the earth barren>> meaning, tranquil and needy of that which will give it life with water, or that it has reached the highest level and similitude….. this is the Noor with which the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam  made Dua.’

‘AbdurRazzaq bin ‘Abdul-Muhsin al-Badr said:

‘From the manners of making Dua’ is what Allaah Ta’ala mentioned in His saying:

ادْعُوا رَبَّكُمْ تَضَرُّعًا وَخُفْيَةً إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ () وَلَا تُفْسِدُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ بَعْدَ إِصْلَاحِهَا وَادْعُوهُ خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا إِنَّ رَحْمَتَ اللَّهِ قَرِيبٌ مِنَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ

<< Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret.  He likes not the aggressors. And do not do mischief on the earth, after it has been set in order and invoke Him with fear and hope; Surely, Allaah’s Mercy is (ever) near unto the good –doers>>[al-‘Aaraaf: 55-56]

In his Dua’, the Muslim combines presence of the heart and the feeling of dire need of what is sought through the Dua’.  He does this causing it to coincide with the best times for Dua’ along with Khushoo’ (humility) in the heart, subservience to his Lord, submission to Him, imploring Him, having graciousness, having faced the Qibla in a state of purification, raising his hands to Allaah, beginning with praise and exaltation of Allaah and joining this with prayer upon Muhammad sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam who is His slave and Messenger.

After this, he puts forward, to Allaah, his requests of repentance and forgiveness, then beseeches Allaah, earnestly asking of Him with total subservience to Him, supplicating to Him with fervent desire and dread and seeking closeness to Him with His Names, Attributes and Tawheed.  He makes this Dua’ with sincerity so one hopes that it will not be rejected.  This is especially so if all of this coincides with supplications the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam taught as well as the best times and places for the answering of supplications along with the  greatest Name of Allaah[2], whereby if He is asked He bestows and if He is called He answers the supplication.’

من حديث علي رضي الله عنه قال:

كان رسول الله صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إذا ركع؛ قال: اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ رَكَعْتُ، وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ، وَلَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ، ‌خَشَعَ ‌لَكَ ‌سَمْعِي، ‌وَبَصَرِي، وَمُخِّي، وَعَظْمِي، وَعَصَبِي وما استقلَّت به قدمي…..

أخرجه مسلم ، {وأبو عوانة} وأبو داود، والدارقطني، وكذا الترمذي، والبيهقي، والطيالسي ، وأحمد .

قال الألباني : هو قطعة من حديث علي رضي الله عنه قال:

كان رسول الله صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إذا افتتح الصلاة؛ كبر، ثم قال:” وجهت وجهي … ” إلى آخره، وفيه: وإذا ركع؛ قال: اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ رَكَعْتُ …. فذكره.

  أي: لا لغيرك خضعت. وإسناد ” خشع ” – أي: تواضع، وخضع – إلى السمع وغيره مما ليس من شأنه الإدراك والتأثر؛ كناية عن كمال الخشوع والخضوع؛ أي: قد بلغ

غايته؛ حتى كأنه ظهر أثره في هذه الأعضاء، وصارت خاشعة لربها. سندي.

قال الشيخ الاسلام ابن تيمية:

فَعُلِمَ أَنَّ الْخُشُوعَ فِيهِ سُكُونٌ وَانْخِفَاضٌ؛ وَلِهَذَا «كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ فِي حَالِ رُكُوعِهِ: ” اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ رَكَعْتُ وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ وَلَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ

خَشَعَ لَكَ سَمْعِي وَبَصَرِي وَمُخِّي وَعَقْلِي وَعَصَبِي» ” رَوَاهُ مسلم فِي صَحِيحِهِ، فَوَصَفَ نَفْسَهُ بِالْخُشُوعِ فِي حَالِ الرُّكُوعِ؛ لِأَنَّ الرَّاكِعَ سَاكِنٌ مُتَوَاضِعٌ،

قال أبو العباس أحمد بن عمر بن إبراهيم القرطبي (٦٥٦ هـ)

وقوله: ‌خشع ‌لك ‌سمعي، ‌وبصري، ومخي، وعظمي وعصبي؛ أي: أخذ كل عضو من هذه الأعضاء حظه من الخضوع والتذلل؛ أي: سكنت وافتقرت، وإن كان أصل الخشوع في القلب؛ لكن ثمرته تظهر على الجوارح والأعضاء، فسُمِّيَ بذلك: خشوعًا، كما قال تعالى: {تَرَى الأَرضَ خَاشِعَةً}؛ أي: متذللة، مفتقرة لما تحيا به من الماء، أو يكون هذا على الإغياء (١) والتشبيه، كما قال:
لا عُضوَ لي إلا وفيه محبةٌ … فكأن أعضائي خلقن قلوبًا
وهذا هو النور الذي دعا به النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم
