‘The Dunya (worldly life) is cursed and whatever is in it, except that by which the Face of Allaah is sought.’

An Explanation

Al-Hafidh Ibn Rajab (d.795 A.H.) -Rahimahullaah- said:

‘So the Dunya (worldly life) and everything in it is cursed, meaning that it takes a person away from Allaah, because it busies a person away from Allaah, except beneficial knowledge which indicates to Allaah and knowing about Him, and seeking closeness to Allaah and His Pleasure. Also the remembrance of Allaah and loyalty to that which brings a person closer to Allaah.

This is the intent and meaning ‘of the Dunya’.

Indeed Allaah commanded His worshippers to have Taqwa of Him and obey Him. To adhere to continuously remember Him. Like Ibn Mas’ood said: ‘Having Taqwa (piety) correctly is to remember Allaah and not to forget Him.’

In fact Allaah legislated establishing the prayer so He could be remembered and likewise the Hajj and performing Tawwaf.

The best of the people who carry out deeds of worship are those who remember Allaah the most in that worship.

Therefore, all of this worship is not from the dispraise of the Dunya, rather it is the goal of bringing into existence the Dunya and humans, just as Allaah Ta’ala said:

<<I did not create mankind and the Jinn except to worship Me.>> [Dhariyat: 56]

[Jamia al-Uloom wal Hikm – by Ibn Rajab 2/199]

Shaykh Abdul Azeez Bin Baz – May Allaah have mercy upon him- (d. 1420 A.H.) said:

‘The Hadeeth: ‘The Dunya (worldly life) is cursed and whatever is in it is cursed except the remembrance of Allaah and whatever follows on from that.’

[Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi and graded Hasan by Al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Majah, Naseehah 46]

This means that the worldly life is dispraised, and whatever is in it is dispraised except for the remembrance and whatever follows on from that of obedience to Allaah, following His Messenger, being upright upon his religion, a scholar of the Sharia of Allaah, the teacher of the Sharia of Allaah.

The Dunya is dispraised no good in it except for the remembrance of Allaah and what follows on from it. They are the those who obey Allaah and perform righteous deeds, and those who are steadfast and upright upon the Deen from the people of Eemaan and Taqwa, a scholar and a teacher, otherwise the Dunya is dispraised and fleeting.

<< The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception (a deceiving thing).>> [Ala-Imran: 185]

<< Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children, as the likeness of vegetation after rain, thereof the growth is pleasing to the tiller; afterwards it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw.>>

[al-Hadeed: 20]

So the Dunya is fleeting, will expire, however, what remains is your righteous action, your Taqwa of Allaah, your Emaan in Allaah, your exerting yourself in the obedience of Allaah, this is what will remain. It is necessary for the believer to have concern with this and that he has a strong resolve.’

Sincerity & Love of Praise cannot be combined in a Heart

Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawzeeyah as-Salafi  Rahimahullaah said:

‘Sincerity, the love of being praised, commendation, and having a greed for what the people have, cannot be combined in a heart, except like water and fire being together or a lizard and whale being together.

Therefore, if your soul informs you of the request for sincerity,

Then firstly face greed and desires and slaughter them with the knife of the despair of benefiting from greed.

And face praise and commendation and reject this praise just like the one who has passion for the worldly life and renounces the Hereafter.

Therefore, when your slaughtering of desires and rejection of commendation and praise is correct, then sincerity [Ikhlaas] becomes easy for you.

If you asked, what would make the slaughtering of desires and rejection of commendation and praise easy for me.

I would say, as for slaughtering desires, then what makes that easy for you is your certain knowledge  that there is nothing that you desire and want, except that it is in Allaah’s Hand Alone and is His treasury.

No one possess it other than Him, and no one can give anything of it other than Him.

As for rejection of praise and commendation, then this becomes easy for you by knowing, that there is none that can make that praise beneficial and beautify it and cause harm from its dispraise, and what it disfigures except Allaah alone; Just like when that Bedouin said to the Prophet:
‘When I praise someone it is beautification for him, and when I dispraise someone then it is ugliness him.’

The Prophet said: ‘Only Allaah -Azza wa Jal- can do that.’

[Collected by Ahmad and Tirmidhi & authenticatedbyAl-Albaani]

So keep away from the praise from a person who does not beautify you with his praise, and from the dispraise of the person whose dispraise does not harm you, but desire the praise of the One (Allaah) who makes His praise all beautiful, and when He dispraises something then it is evil.

You will not be capable of all that except with patience and certainty.

So whenever patience and certainty are lost then you will be like the person who wanted to travel on the sea without a boat.

Allaah Ta’ala said:
《So be patient. Verily, the Promise of Allah is true, and let not those who have no certainty of faith, discourage you from conveying Allah’s Message (which you are obliged to convey)》[Room:60]

Allaah Ta’ala said:
《And We made from among them (Children of Israel), leaders, giving guidance under Our Command, when they were patient and used to believe with certainty in Our Ayaat.》
[Sajda: 24]
