From Abu Hurairah who said that the Prophet – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam said:
أسْعَدُ النَّاسِ بشَفَاعَتي يَومَ القِيَامَةِ، مَن قالَ لا إلَهَ إلَّا اللَّهُ، خَالِصًا مِن قَلْبِهِ، أوْ نَفْسِهِ.
‘The happiest of the people with my intercession on the Day of Judgement is the one who said ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ sincerely from his heart or from his self.’

An Explanation
Shaykh Rabee bin Hadi Al-Madkhali said:
‘Imam Ahmad -Rahimahullaah- said in ‘Tabaqat al-Hanabilah’ (1/343):
‘Al-Eemaan is by statements and actions, it increases and decreases. Its increase is when you perform good deeds and its decrease is when you perform bad deeds.
A person can exit Al-Eemaan to Al-Islaam. However, nothing exits a person from Islaam except committing Shirk with Allaah the most Great, or rejecting an obligation from the matters which Allaah Azza wa Jal- has obligated, denying it and refusing it. However, if a person leaves off an obligation out of laziness or neglect, then he is under the Will of Allaah, if Allaah wants He will punish him, and if He wants He will pardon him.’
This is a text from Imam Ahmad were he does not perform Takfeer for not performing deeds. In this text he does not make Takfeer except for committing Shirk with Allaah the Most Great, and he does not make Takfeer for leaving off deeds.
What is apparent is that he took this from the saying of Allaah the Most High:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ ۚ
<<Indeed Allaah does not forgive the sin of setting up partners in worship with Him, but He forgives whom he pleases sins other than that>> [Nisa: 116]
Also from the Hadeeth of Intercession where it mentions: Allaah will take out from the Hell-Fire whoever has in his heart, smaller than, smaller than, smaller than the like of an atom of Eemaan.
Also from the Ahadeeth of the excellence of Tawheed, is the saying of the Prophet – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam:
‘The happiest of the people with my intercession on the Day of Judgement is the one who said ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’ sincerely from his heart or from his self.’
Imam Ahmad has an opinion regarding Takfeer of the one who leaves the prayer, what appears is that this opinion preceded his reversal of making Takfeer due to the Ahadeeth of intercession and the mentioned Ayaah and the Ahadeeth of the excellence of Tawheed.’

[صحيح] وعن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال:
قلت: يا رسول الله! من أسعدُ الناسِ بشفاعَتِكَ يوم القيامة؟ قال رسول الله – صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ -:
“لقد ظننتُ يا أبا هريرة! أن لا يسألني عن هذا الحديث أحد أول منك؛ لما رأيت من حرصك على الحديث، أسعد الناس بشفاعتي يوم القيامة من قال: لا إله إلا الله خالصاً من قلبه أو نفسه”.

وقال الإمام أحمد –رحمه الله- في “طبقات الحنابلة” (1/343):
“والإيمان قول وعمل يزيد وينقص زيادته إذا أحسنت ونقصانه إذا أسأت ويخرج الرجل من الإيمان إلى الإسلام ولا يخرجه من الإسلام شيء إلا الشرك بالله العظيم أو يرد فريضة من فرائض الله عز وجل جاحدا بها فإن تركها كسلا أو تهاونا كان في مشيئة الله إن شاء عذبه وإن شاء عفا عنه”.
فهذان نصان عن الإمام أحمد لا يكفر فيهما بعدم العمل، وفي أحدهما نص أنه لا يُكفر إلا بالشرك بالله العظيم، ولا يكفر بترك العمل.
والظاهر أنه أخذهما من قول الله تعالى: (إن الله لا يغفر أن يشرك به ويغفر ما دون ذلك لمن يشاء)، ومن أحاديث الشفاعة التي منها: يخرج الله من النار من في قلبه أدنى أدنى أدنى من مثقال ذرة من إيمان.
ومن أحاديث فضل التوحيد، ومنها قوله –صلى الله عليه وسلم-: “أسعد الناس بشفاعتي يوم القيامة من قال: لا إله إلا الله خالصاً من قبل نفسه”.
وله رواية في تكفير تارك الصلاة، والذي يظهر أن هذين القولين السابقين منه رجوع عن التكفير بناء على أحاديث الشفاعة والآية المذكورة وأحاديث فضل التوحيد.
