Day 10 – A Deed Done Sincerely and Seeking Allaah’s Face

Translated & Compiled

By

Abbas Abu Yahya

From Abu Umamah who said:

A man came to the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- and said: ‘How about a man who takes
part in a battle seeking a reward and to be remembered, what does he get?’

The Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam said:

‘He gets nothing.’

The person repeated what he asked three times and the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam said:

‘He gets nothing.’

Then the Messenger said:

‘Indeed Allaah -Azza wa Jal- does not accept a deed except that which was done sincerely and seeking His Face.’

An Explanation

Ikhlaas (Sincerity) & Tawheed are a Tree in the Heart

Al-Hafidh Ibn al-Qayyim -Rahimahullaah- (d. 751 A.H.) said:

‘A year is like a tree, the months are like its branches, the days are like its twigs, and the hours are its leaves.

Every breath is its fruits, so whoever breathes with obedience to Allaah, then the fruits of his tree will be good, and whosoever breathes with sinfulness then his fruits will be a bitter fruit, as for the harvest then it will be on the Day of Judgement.

So at the harvest it will become clear which fruit will be sweet and which will be bitter.

Ikhlaas (sincerity) and Tawheed are a tree in the heart, its branches are deeds, its fruits are a good life in this world and eternal bliss in the Hereafter.

The fruits of Paradise are such that their season is not limited, and their supply will not be cut off,  likewise are the fruits of Tawheed and Ikhlaas (Sincerity) in the worldly life.

Shirk, lying and showing off is a tree in the heart, its fruits are lowliness, fear, anxiety, worry and concern, a constrained chest, darkness of the heart and its fruits in the Hereafter is Az-Zaqqoom (a tree in Hell-fire), eternal punishment and Allaah mentions these two trees in Soorah Ibrahim.’

《Do you not see how Allah sets forth a parable? – A goodly word as a goodly tree, whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches (reach) to the sky (i.e. very high). Giving its fruit at all times, by the Leave of its Lord and Allah sets forth parables for mankind in order that they may remember. And the parable of an evil word is that of an evil tree uprooted from the surface of earth having no stability. Allah will keep firm those who believe, with the word that stands firm in this world (i.e. they will keep on worshipping Allah Alone and none else), and in the Hereafter. And Allah will cause to go astray those who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.), and Allah does what He wills. Have you not seen those who have changed the Blessings of Allah into disbelief (by denying Prophet Muhammad and his Message of Islam), and caused their people to dwell in the house of destruction?》[Ibrahim: 25-28]

[From ‘Al-Fawaid’ p.164]

Shaykh Muhammad Nasiruddeen Al-Albaani (d. 1420 A.H.) said:

‘This Hadeeth and others, show that good deeds from the believer are not accepted if he does not intend by it the Face of Allaah Azza wa Jal. Regarding that is the saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

<<  So whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord.” >>

[Kahf: 110]

Therefore, if this is the case of the believer, then how is the condition of the non-Muslim with his Lord if he does not make his deeds sincerely for Him?

The reply is in the saying of Allaah Tabarak wa Ta’ala:

<< And We shall turn to whatever deeds they (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, etc.) did, and We shall make such deeds as scattered floating particles of dust.>>  [Furqan: 23]

For the sake of argument if the non-Muslims do actually intend the Face of Allaah with their good deeds even though they are upon disbelief, then Allaah Ta’ala does not cause this to be wasted for them, in fact He rewards them for it in this Dunyaa (worldly life).

There is clear, authentic text from the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam in this regard, which is:

‘Indeed Allaah does not oppress a believer of his good deed which He gives him, (and in another narration: he is rewarded for it with provisions in the Dunyaa) and rewards him for it in the Hereafter. As for the non-Muslim then Allaah feeds him due to the good deeds he did for Allaah in the Dunyaa), until he gets to the Hereafter and he has no good deeds which he can be rewarded for.’
