Hadeeth
Ayesha said:
‘The Prophet SallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam entered and heard the sound of a baby crying, so he said:
” ما لصبيكم هذا يبكي؟
فهلا استرقيتم له من العين؟ “
‘Why is your baby crying? If you only had performed Ruqqaya upon him from the evil eye.’
[Collected by Ahmad & Al-Albaani said that this chain is Hasan in Silsilah Saheehah No. 1048]
From Ubayd bin Rafa’atul Zurqi, that Asma bint Umaays said: O Messenger of Allaah ! Indeed, the evil eye rushes to the son of Ja’far so should I recite upon them?’
He said:
نعم، فإنه لو كان شيء سابق القدر لسبقته العين
‘Yes, if there was something which could compete with al-Qadr, it would be the evil eye.’

How is Ruqqaya performed for a child?
Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih al-Uthaymeen was asked:
How is Ruqqaya performed for a child?
He answered:
‘Place your hands together then you recite and spittle on to your hands and wipe your hands on the child.
As for the one where the child is not present then he makes Dua for him instead of reciting upon him.’

Seeking Refuge from the Evil Eye for Children
From Ibn Abbas who said the Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– used to seek refuge for al-Hassan and al-Hussein, he would say:
أعوذ بكلمات الله التامة من كل شيطان وهامة ، ومن كل عين لامة
‘I seek refuge for you two with Allaah’s perfect words from every Shaytaan (devil) and poisonous creature and every evil eye.’
He –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– said that this is how Ibrahim used to seek refuge for Ishaaq and Ismaeel.’

An Explanation:
Abul Ulaa AbdurRahmaan al-Mubarakfoori -Rahimahullaah- said:
‘Allaah’s Words’: ‘It has been said that they are the Qur’aan and it has also been said they are Allaah’s Names.’
‘Perfect’: ‘Al-Jazari said: ‘Indeed Allaah’s Speech has been described as being Perfect, because it is not permissible for any of His speech to have deficiency or fault like there is in the speech of people.’
‘It has been said that the meaning of ‘Perfect’ here is that it benefits the one seeking refuge with these ‘Perfect words’ and protecting him from illnesses and this would be sufficient for him.’
‘Poisonous creature’: ‘Every type of creature that kills with poison. And it is possible that it could mean any crawling animal even if it does not kill, like insects.’
‘Evil eye’: ‘From every evil type of affliction from the eye.’

How to Seek Refuge from the Evil Eye for Children

Muhammad Nasir uddeen al-Albaani -Rahimahullaah
Shaykh al-Albaani was asked over the phone:
Phone rings.
Shaykh: yes!
Caller: Aslaamu alaykum.
Shaykh: Wa alaykum as-Salaam.
Caller: O Shaykh regarding ‘I seek refuge for you two with Allaah’s perfect words from every Shaytaan (devil) and poisonous creature and every evil eye.’ Is this said three consecutive times or just once?
Shaykh: No, it is mentioned once, however if it appears to the one saying this Dua’ that he needs to repeat it without specifying three times, then there is no problem with that.
Caller: and should he place his hand on the head of the one sought refuge for?
Shaykh: Yes, yes!
Caller: Even in congregation, if it is a group of children together, how can he place his hand upon all of them?
Shaykh: He should place his two hands on two of the children, then repeat this on the rest of the children.
Caller: Right hand and left hand, with both hands?
Shaykh: Yes, yes.
Caller: Regarding the hadeeth that the Messenger –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– would not sleep until he recited Soorah Mulk, al – Isra, Zumar, and Sajdah, is this when he lies down on his bed at night, or before he lies down?
Shaykh: What is important is that he recites before he falls asleep, whether it is whilst he is sitting or lying then it is up to him’

Seeking Ruqqaya
From Ayesha that the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam used to allow her to seek someone to perform Ruqqaya from the evil eye.’

From Ayesha the wife of the Prophet – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- who said:
عَنْ عَائِشَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أنَّهَا قَالَتْ: كانَ إذا اشْتَكى رَسولُ اللهِ ﷺ رَقاهُ جِبْرِيلُ، قالَ: باسْمِ اللهِ يُبْرِيكَ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ داءٍ يَشْفِيكَ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ حاسِدٍ إذا حَسَدَ، وَشَرِّ كُلِّ ذِي عَيْنٍ.
that the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam suffered, so Jibraeel performed Ruqqaya upon him saying:
باسْمِ اللهِ يُبْرِيكَ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ داءٍ يَشْفِيكَ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ حاسِدٍ إذا حَسَدَ، وَشَرِّ كُلِّ ذِي عَيْنٍ
With the Name of Allaah may free you away from every illness, may you be cured, from the evil of the envier every time he envies and from the evil of the one who has the evil eye.’

From Abu Saeed that Jibraeel came to the Prophet ﷺ and asked O Muhammad are you suffering?’ to which the Prophet said yes, Jibraeel said:
باسْمِ اللهِ أَرْقِيكَ، مِن كُلِّ شَيءٍ يُؤْذِيكَ، مِن شَرِّ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ، أَوْ عَيْنِ حاسِدٍ، اللَّهُ يَشْفِيكَ، باسْمِ اللهِ أَرْقِيكَ.
I perform Ruqqaya upon you in the name of Allaah, from everything which harms you, from the evil of every soul, or the evil eye of the envier, may Allaah cure you, I perform Ruqqaya upon you in the name of Allaah.’

Shaykh Muhammad bin Ali bin Adam al-Ethiopi -Rahimahullaah- said:
‘The evil eye is the arrow which is fired from the soul of the envier and the one who has an evil eye towards his target. Sometimes that arrow is on target and sometimes it misses. If that arrow finds the person exposed and he has no protection or armour then it will affect him, most definitely, however if it finds him while he is cautious and fully armed, then that arrow cannot reach its target and is lost and that is the same as the one who throws pebbles.
However, the evil eye is from desires and souls, whereas pebbles are physical and bodies.’

عن عائشة قالت:
دخل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فسمع صوت صبي يبكي فقال:
” ما لصبيكم هذا يبكي؟
فهلا استرقيتم له من العين؟ “.
أخرجه أحمد و قال الألباني هذا إسناد حسن في السلسلة الصحيحة ١٠٤٨
عن عبيد بن رفاعة الزرقي أن أسماء بنت عميس قالت: يا رسول الله !إن ولد جعفر تسرع إليهم العين فأسترقي لهم؟
فقال: ” نعم، فإنه لو لو كان شيء سابق القدر لسبقته العين “.
أخرجه الترمذي وابن ماجه وأحمد وابن عدي و حسنه الألباني في السلسلة الصحيحة ١٢٥٢
قال ابن عثيمين رحمه الله: “ما هي صفة “الورد” على الأطفال ؟
فأجاب : يجمع كفيه ويقرأ وينفث فيهما ، ويمسح على الطفل . أما إن لم يكن الطفل عنده ، فيكون دعاءً ، لا قراءة

عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ أنَّ جِبْرِيلَ أَتى النَّبيَّ ﷺ فقالَ: يا مُحَمَّدُ اشْتَكَيْتَ؟ فقالَ: نَعَمْ، قالَ: باسْمِ اللهِ أَرْقِيكَ، مِن كُلِّ شَيءٍ يُؤْذِيكَ، مِن شَرِّ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ، أَوْ عَيْنِ حاسِدٍ، اللَّهُ يَشْفِيكَ، باسْمِ اللهِ أَرْقِيكَ.
