From the book ‘Saheeh Targheeb wa Tarheeb’ the chapter titled: an encouragement of what to say when going to sleep and also what is mentioned about the one who sleeps and does not remember Allaah Taala.

From al-Bara bin Aazib -RadhiAllaahu anhu who said the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam said:

‘When you come to your place of sleep, then perform Wudu the like of the Wudu for the prayer, then lie down on your right hand side and say:

اللهم إنّي أسلمتُ نفسي إليكْ، ووجَّهْتُ وجهي إليك، وفوَّضتُ أمري إليك، وألجأتُ ظَهري إليك، رغبةً ورهبةً إليك، لا ملجأ ولا منجاً منك إلا إليك، آمنتُ بكتابك الذي أنزلتَ، ونبيِّك الذي أرسلتَ

‘O Allaah indeed I have submitted my soul to You, I have turned my face to You,
I have entrusted my matters to You I have relied upon You, with hope and fear of You, there is no refuge nor any success from You except by turning to You,

I have believed in Your Book which You revealed and the Prophet whom You sent.’

Transliteration
Allahumma inni aslaamtu nafsi ilayk,
wa wajjahtu wajhi ilayk, wa fawwadtu amri ilayk, wa alja’tu dhahri ilayk, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayk, la malja’a wa la manja minka illa ilayk, amantu bikitabik alladhi anzalta, wa nabiyyik alladhi arsalta

If you died on that night then you will have died upon the natural disposition. Make this supplication the last thing that you say.’

Al-Bara said: so I repeated the supplication to the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam and when I reached the part:

آمنتُ بكتابِك الذي أنزلْتَ

‘I have believed in Your Book which You revealed…’
I added the word (meaning inthe next part of the Dua),
ورسولِك!
‘and Your Messenger’.

The Prophet said: ‘No, but say,

“ونبيِّك الذي أرسلتَ”

‘and the Prophet whom You sent.’

In the narration of Bukhari and Tirmidhi, the Prophet said:
فإنّك إنْ مُتَّ من ليلتِك، مُتَّ على الفطرةِ، وإنْ أصبحتَ أصبتَ خيراً
‘If you died on that night then you will have died upon the natural disposition and if reach the morning then you have reached the morning with goodness.’

(الترغيب في كلمات يقولهنّ حين يأوي إلى فراشه، وما جاء فيمن نام ولم يذكر الله تعالى)

603 – (1) [صحيح] عن البراء بنِ عازبٍ رضي الله عنه قال: قال النبي – صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ -:
“إذا أتيتَ مضْجَعَكَ، فتوضأْ وضوءَكَ للصلاةِ، ثم اضطجعْ على شِقِّكَ الأَيمن، ثم قلْ:
(اللهم إنّي أسلمتُ نفسي إليكْ، ووجَّهْتُ وجهي إليك، وفوَّضتُ أمري إليك، وألجأتُ ظَهري إليك، رغبةً ورهبةً إليك، لا ملجأ ولا منجاً منك إلا إليك، آمنتُ بكتابك الذي أنزلتَ، ونبيِّك الذي أرسلتَ).
فإنْ مُتَّ مِن ليلتِك فأنتَ على الفطرة، واجعلهُنَّ آخرَ ما تتكلم به”. قال: فردَّدْتُها على النبي – صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ -، فلما بلغتُ (آمنتُ بكتابِك الذي أنزلْتَ)،
قلت: ورسولِك! قال: “لا، ونبيِّك الذي أرسلتَ”.
رواه البخاري ومسلم وأبو داود والترمذي والنسائي وابن ماجه.
وفي رواية للبخاري والترمذي:
“فإنّك إنْ مُتَّ من ليلتِك، مُتَّ على الفطرةِ، وإنْ أصبحتَ أصبتَ خيراً”.
