Al-Khatli said:
‘I saw a Shaykh riding in Mina, another Shaykh leading the ride and another Shaykh guiding the riding animal from behind.
They were both saying: ‘Make space for the Shaykh.’
I asked: ‘Who is the rider?’
It was said: ‘It is al-Awza’ee.’
I asked: ‘Who is the one leading it?’
The person said: ‘It is Sufyaan ath-Thawri.’
I asked: ‘Who is guiding the animal?’ The person said: ‘It is Malik bin Anas.’

رأيت شيخًا راكبًا بمنى وشيخ يقوده وآخر يسوقه، وهما يقولان: أوسعوا للشيخ،
فقلت من الراكب؟ فقيل: الأوزاعي،
قلت: من القائد؟ قال: سفيان الثوري،
قلت: فالسائق؟ قال: مالك بن أنس
