A series on issues regarding sending the Salat and the Salam upon the Prophet.

Sending Salat Whilst making Dua’[1] (Supplicating)

1 – From Fadal-latah bin ‘Ubayd – a Companion of the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam who said: the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam heard a man making Dua’ in his prayers. He did not praise Allaah and did not send Salat upon the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam.  So, the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam said: ‘Hasten your own Dua’ then he called the man or another person and said:

إذا صلى أحدكم فليبدأ بتمجيد الله والثناء عليه ثم يصلي على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ثم يدعو بعد بما شاء

‘When one of you makes Dua’, then he should begin by praising Allaah and glorifying Him, then send Salat upon the Prophet  sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam. After that, make whatever Dua’ you like.’[2]

2  – From ‘Alee – Radi Allaahu anhu – who said:

كلُّ دعاءٍ محجوبٌ حتى يُصَلِّى على محمد – صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ -[وآل محمد]

‘Every Dua’ is hidden away until Salat is sent upon Muhammad sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam and the family of Muhammad.’[3]

3 – Shamsuddeen Muhammad bin Abee Bakr Ibn Qayyim aj-Jawzeeyah (d.751 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- said:

‘A Salat upon the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam in the Dua’ has the same status of Soorah Fatihah in the prayer…. So the key to Dua’ is Salat upon the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam just as purification is the key for the prayer. May Allaah send Salat and complete Salam upon him and his family.’[4]

4 – ‘Imam Nawawi said: ‘The scholars agreed that it is recommended to start the Dua’ with al-Hamd (praise) for Allaah Ta’ala and glorifying Him, then to send Sallat upon the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam– and likewise to end the Dua’ with that. The Aathaar (narrations) regarding this point are numerous and well known.’[5]

[1] Conditions for Dua’ to be Accepted

Shaykh Muhammad bin Uthaymeen mentions: ‘the conditions for the acceptance of Dua’ are:

  • Ikhlaas (sincerity)
  • That Dua’ should not have enmity in it.
  • It is a condition that one makes Dua’ to Allaah with certainty that Allaah will respond and not to make Dua’ experimentally
  • keeping away from Haraam income.’
