AbdurRazzaq al-Abbad said:
‘This chapter heading was written by the author –Rahimullaah- to explain what was connected to the Kohl of the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam. It is from the guidance of the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– and from his Sunnan, sayings and actions.
Kohl is from a well-known rock. There is a type which is black in colour and there another which is reddish, all of these are called in Arabic ‘Ithmid’ (إثمد).
It can be broken up very easily and grounded completely whereby it becomes soft, then it is applied to the eye at an incline etc. It has been mentioned from the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– an encouragement to use Ithmid specifically for kohl.
A Hadeeth about the benefits of Kohl
From Ali bin Abu Taalib from the Prophet:
“ عليكم بالإثمد فإنه منبتة للشعر , مذهبة للقذى , مصفاة للبصر “ .
‘Use Ithmid, indeed it causes the eyelashes to grow, clears away dirt and sharpens the eyesight.’
[Collected by Bukhari in Tareekh, Tabraani and Albaani said its Isnaad is Hasan. Saheehah no. 665 & no. 2642]
Using Kohl on the Day of Ashoora
Shaykh Albaani after researching and grading a Hadeeth to be fabricated quoted Ibn al-Qayyim saying:
‘As for the Ahadeeth about applying eyeliner, oiling and wearing perfume on the day of Ashoora’ then this is from the fabrications of the liars. They are opposed by others who take it has a day of pain and sadness, both these two Mubtada’ groups who are outside the realm of the Sunnah. Ahl-ul-Sunnah carry out that which the Prophet SallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam ordered them with of fasting and they keep away from that which Shaytaan ordered them with from Bida’.’

Applying it in Odd numbers
From Anas that the Prophet used to apply Khol in odd numbers.
[Collected by al-Bazzar in ‘Musnad’ & Shaykh Albaani declared the Hadeeth to be authentic due to supporting narrations and he said: ‘So praise be to Allaah for giving success, I ask Allaah to give me increase of His virtue and that He enter me into Paradise with His mercy, indeed He is the most Merciful and oft-forgiving.’ Saheehah no. 2746]
From Imran bin Abi Anas who mentioned from the Prophet that:
‘He used to put Khol on his right eye three times and in the left twice.’
[Collected by Ibn Saad in ‘at-Tabaqaat’, Ibn Abi Shaybah in ‘al-Musanaf’ and Albaani graded it Saheeh in Saheehah no. 633]
Hadeeth 42 – clears the sight
From Ibn Abbas that the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– said:
“Use Ithmid as your eyeliner because it clears the sight and causes the hair (eyelashes or eyebrows) to grow.”
[Collected by Ibn Majah & Albaani declared it to be Saheeh in Mukhtasir ash-Shamail al-Muhammadeeyah]
‘Ibn Abbas claimed that the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– used to have a tool to apply Khol with every night [and in another narration: before sleep with Ithmid] thrice in the right eye and thrice in the left.’ – Da’eef Jiddan.
Hadeeth 43 – when you go to sleep
From Jabir ibn Abdullaah who said: the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– said:
“You should apply Ithmid when you go to sleep because it makes eyesight clearer and causes the hair to grow.”
[Collected by Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi and Albaani graded it Saheeh & researched it in Saheehah no. 724. Abu Dawood has extra wording: ‘Wear white clothing since it is the best of your clothing and shroud your dead in it.’ in Mukhtasir ash-Shamail al-Muhammadeeyah]
Hadeeth 44 – best of your eyeliner
From Ibn Abbas who said: the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– said:
“The best of your eyeliner is Ithmid as it clears the sight and causes the hair to grow.”
[Albaani said: ‘I say its Isnaad is Saheeh upon the conditions of Muslim’ and it was collected by Nisa’ee, Ibn Majah and Albaani graded it Saheeh in Mukhtasir ash-Shamail al-Muhammadeeyah]
Hadeeth 45 – Causes the Eyelashes to grow
From Ibn ‘Umar who said: the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– said:
“You should use al- Ithmid for it clears the sight and causes the eyelashes to grow.”
