No. 2 – Imam at-Tahawi (d. 321 A.H.) stated in his Aqeedah book:
‘We love the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam and we do not go to extreme in loving any of them, likewise we do not keep away or free ourselves from any of them.
We hate those who hate them and those who mention the Companions without goodness and we only think good of them.
Loving the Companions is from the religion, and from Eemaan and Ihsaan being kind to them.
Whereas hating them is disbelief and hypocrisy and oppression.’

وقال الطحاوي – رحمه الله – (المتوفى سنة 321هـ):
في عقيدته :” ونحب أصحاب رسول الله – صلى الله عليه وسلم – ولا نفرط في حب أحد منهم ، ولا نتبرأ من أحد منهم ، ونبغـض من يبغضهـم، وبغير الخير يذكرهم ، ولا نذكرهم إلا بخير ، وحبهم : دين ، وإيمان ، وإحسـان ، وبغضهم : كفر ، ونفاق ، وطغيان ” .
