Question:
O Shaykh is it permissible to send the reward for reciting the Qur’aan? Some people use your comment in ‘Sharh al-Aqeedah at-Tahaweeyah’ about this subject, that you hold it to be permissible.
The Shaykh: Dear brother I do not say that it is permissible absolutely. I say that a son is from earnings . . . like the Prophet alayhi as-Salam said:
‘The best earnings are the earnings a man gains from the work by his own hands, and indeed, your children are from your earnings.’
Allaah Ta’ala said:
<< and We record that which they send before (them), and their traces (of all good deeds) >> [Yasin: 12]
The Prophet -alayhi as-Salat wa Salam- said in the authentic Hadeeth:
‘When a person dies..’
And in a narration:
‘When a son of Adam dies his actions are disconnected from him except three: recurring charity or knowledge by which he benefits or a righteous son who makes Dua for him.’
The righteous deeds of a righteous son benefit his parents, because he is one of the effects of his parents
{وَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُوا وَآثَارَهُمْ}
<< and We record that which they send before (them), and their traces (of all good deeds) >> [Yasin: 12]
However, I do not say that this recitation benefits other than the parents, and likewise any other righteous action benefits other than the parents.
Perhaps you remember that some of the previous scholars say: that the charity a person gives on behalf of some Muslims then this charity reaches them even if they were other than the parents. However, here we limit it to reaching the parents. The charity which a son gives then the reward also reaches the parents, likewise all good deeds, such as freeing a slave, and all worship generally reaches the parents due to what we mentioned earlier from the general evidence.
We do not hold the opinion of other than the parents benefitting from these justifications or from these types of worship. This is why it is necessary to re-examine that speech, so that which we did not say is ascribed to us, however, we say that the matter is limited.’
