From Abdullaah ibn Amr who said, the Messenger of Allaah –SallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:
افترقتِ اليهودُ على إحدى وسبعينَ فرقةً ،وافترقتِ النصارى على اثنتَينِ وسبعينَ فرقةً ، وستفترقُ هذه الأمةُ على ثلاثٍ وسبعينَ فرقةً كلُّها في النارِ إلا واحدةً
“The Jews had split up in to seventy-one sects and the Christians had split up into seventy-two sects, and my nation will split up into seventy-three sects all of whom will go to the fire except one.’
The Companions asked, ‘Which one O Messenger of Allaah?’
He replied:
الْجَمَاعَةُ
‘The Jamaa’aah.”
In another narration:
مَا أَنَا عَلَيْهِ وَأَصْحَابِي
“What I am upon and my Companions are upon.”
[Collected by Tirmidhi, Al-Hafidh al-Iraqi said in ‘al-Mughni’: collected by Tirmidhi from the Hadeeth of Abdullah bin Amr and graded it Hasan, by Abu Dawood from the Hadeeth of Muwayeeyah, ibn Majah from the hadeeth of Anas and Awf bin Malik, and it is the Jamaa’ and its asaneed are good, and Al-Albaani graded it Hasan in Saheeh Sunnan Tirmidhi]
Seventy-Three Sects
Shaykh AbdurRazzaq Afeefi -Rahimahullaah- said:
‘The people were one Ummah upon the truth with which Allaah had entrusted them, from what is from the nature of Islaam, with what He enjoined upon them of guidance and clear explanation.
When a long time had passed by, their hearts had become hard and the Shayateen (Devils) made them leave the straight path……except that Allaah -Subhanahu- let His Sunnah (way) occur and executed His Wisdom. Which is that Allaah destined for the truth in every time period a Jama’ah (group) to stand up upon the truth, and guide the people to it, and this is a fulfillment of the promise of protecting His Deen. Also, an establishment of the evidences and signs against the people, and to invalidate excuses.
Allaah Ta’ala said:
{إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ }
<< Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur’aan) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption) .>>
[Soorah al-Hijr : 9]
The Prophet –SallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:
‘The Jews had split up in to 71 sects all of whom will be in the fire except one. The Christians had split up into 72 sects all of whom will be in the fire except one. This Ummah will split up into 73 sects all of whom will go to the fire except one.’
In another narration:
They asked, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, which is the saved sect?’
He said:
من كان على مثل ما أنا عليه اليوم وأصحابي
“He who is upon the like of what I am upon today and my Companions are upon.’
In another narration:
He replied:
يد الله على الجماعة
‘It is the Jamaa’aah, the Hand of Allaah is upon the Jamaa’aah.”
It becomes clear from that, the saved sect is the Ahl ul Sunnah wal Jamaa’aah. Its sign and distinguishing mark is the Book of Allaah, and the guidance of His Messenger -alayhi as-Salat wa salam- and what the Salaf of the Ummah are upon, those who believe in the entirely clear texts and act upon them and they return the meanings of the unclear texts back to Allaah.
As for the misguided sects, their sign and distinguishing marks are, separating away from the Book, the Sunnah and the consensus of the Salaf of the Ummah, they follow desires and legislation of Bida and opinions which Allaah had not given permission for, they do this building upon principles which they invented, they base loyalty and hatred upon these principles. Whoever agrees with them, then they praise him and bring him close, and they claim that they are from Ahl -ul-Sunnah wal Jammah.

تميز أهل السنة والجماعة عن بقية الفرق:
قال الشيخ عبد الرزاق عفيفي – رحمه الله -: ” كان الناس أمة واحدة على الحق بما أودع الله فيهم من فطرة الإسلام، وبما عهد إليهم من الهدى والبيان، فلما طال عليهم الأمد قست قلوبهم، فاجتالتهم الشياطين عن الصراط المستقيم … إلا أنه سبحانه جرت سنته، واقتضت حكمته، أن يقيض للحق في كل عصر جماعة تقوم عليه، وتهدي الناس إليه، إنجازاً للوعد بحفظ دينه، وإقامةً للحجة، وإسقاطاً للمعاذير، قال تعالى: {إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ (9)} الحجر: 9، وقال – صلى الله عليه وسلم -: (افترقت اليهود على إحدى وسبعين فرقة كلها في النار إلا واحدة، وافترقت النصارى على اثنتين وسبعين فرقة كلها في النار إلا واحدة، وستفترق هذه الأمة على ثلاث وسبعين فرقة كلها في النار إلا واحدة) (1).وفي رواية، قالوا: يا رسول الله! من الفرقة الناجية؟ قال: (من كان على مثل ما أنا عليه اليوم وأصحابي). وفي رواية، قال: (هي الجماعة يد الله على الجماعة).
وقد تبين من ذلك أن الفرقة الناجية أهل السنة والجماعة، وإن شعارها كتاب الله، وهدي رسوله، عليه الصلاة والسلام وما كان عليه سلف الأمة الذين يؤمنون بمحكم النصوص، ويعملون بها، ويردون إليه ما تشابه منها.
وأما الفرق الضالة، فشعارها مفارقة الكتاب، والسنة، وإجماع سلف الأمة، واتباع الأهواء، وشرع ما لم يأذن به الله من البدع والآراء الزائفة بناءً على أصول وضعوها، يوالون عليها، ويعادون، فمن وافقهم عليها، أثنوا عليه وقرّبوه، وكان في زعمهم من أهل السنة والجماعة، ومن خالفهم تبرأوا منه ونبذوه، وناصبوه العداوة والبغضاء، وربما رموه بالكفر، والخروج من ملة الإسلام لمخالفته لأصولهم الفاسدة” (2).
