‘The Prophet-SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam would be tranquil in the movements of the4.1 tranquil card 1441 prayer so much so that every bone would return to its place after every movement.’

[Collected by Abu Dawood, Bayhaqi & Authenticated by Al-Albaani in Asal Sifat as-Salah 3/808]

From Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allaah-SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam entered the Masjid and a man entered and prayed, then came and gave Salam to the Prophet -SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam,  the Prophet returned the Salam and said:

‘Go back and pray again, indeed you have not prayed.’

So he went back and prayed as he had prayed before, then he came and gave Salam to the Prophet-SallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam and the Prophet said

‘Go back and pray again, indeed you have not prayed.’

This occurred three times, then the man said:

‘I swear by Him Who sent you with the truth, I do not pray better than this so teach me.’

The Prophet said:

‘When you stand to pray then say ‘Allaahu Akbar’, then read from the Qur’aan what you know is easy for you, after that perform Ruku and be tranquil in the Ruku, then rise up from Ruku until you are standing straight, next perform Sajda until you are tranquil in the Sajda, then rise up from Sajda until you are tranquil whilst sitting, and do this in all your prayer.’

[Collected by Bukhari and Muslim]

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen -Rahimahullaah- said:

‘Whoever does this, – meaning is not in a calm state -then his prayer is invalid; because he has left off a pillar from the pillars of prayer………the deficiencies which the Muslims bring regarding this pillar: standing straight after the Ruku, also, this pillar of being in a calm state, which takes place between the two Sajdas, as Shaykh ul Islaam says:

‘Indeed this was from some of the leaders of Bani Ummayyah, they would not lengthen these two pillars [standing straight after the Ruku & sitting between the two Sajdas], the people are upon the religion of their leaders, people acquired from them the shortening of these two pillars. So many people thought, that this was the Sunnah, the Sunnah had died so much so that making it apparent was regarded as evil, or close to evil.

This was to the extent that if a person lengthened these two pillars, someone may presume that the person had forgotten to continue the prayer or had committed a mistake.’

[Sharh al-Mumtay ala Zaad al-Mustaqna]

An issue concerning this pillar of having tranquillity in the prayer:
What is the ruling of making up of the past prayers due to having ignorance of the pillar of being tranquil and calm in the prayer?

The Answer
Shaykh ul Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah says:

‘So we have the one who prayed badly, he was ignorant. If the obligation of being tranquil and calm is known during within the time of the prayer then being tranquil and calm becomes obligatory upon him at that time, and it was not obligatory upon him before that time.’
