As-Salat wa Salam upon the Prophet of Islaam

الصلاة و السلام على نبي الاسلام

By al-Hafidh al-Imam Emaad ad-Deen Isma’eel Ibn Katheer[1] -Rahimullaah-

Translated By Abbas Abu Yahya

al-Hafidh Emaad ad-Deen Isma’eel Ibn Katheer (d. 774 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- said in his Tafseer regarding the saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَمَلَٰٓئِكَتَهُۥ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِيِّۚ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ صَلُّواْ عَلَيۡهِ وَسَلِّمُواْ تَسۡلِيمًا

<< Allaah sends His Salât (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy, etc.) on the Prophet and also His Angels too (ask Allaah to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salât on (ask Allaah to bless) him, and (you should) send Salam upon him.>>[2]

Ibn Katheer -Rahimullaah- said in his Tafseer:

‘The meaning of this Ayaah is: that Allaah -Subhana wa Ta’ala- informed His worshippers of the status of His slave and His Prophet with Him in the high gathering (Angels), in that Allaah Subhana wa Ta’ala praises the Prophet in the high gathering of the Angels that are close to Him.

Also, that the Angels pray for the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam, then Allaah Ta’ala ordered the people of the lower world to send as-Salat wa Salam upon the Prophet, so that the praise of those of the high world and lower world are combined.’

[‘Tafseer al-Qur’aan al-Atheem’ by al-Hafidh Ibn Katheer 3/p.663]

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وبَحَمْدكَ أشْهدُ أنْ لا إلهَ إلا أنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وأتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ

All Praise belongs to Allaah, may His peace and blessings be upon our final Prophet Muhammad, his family, his companions and all those who follow his guidance.

[1] al-Hafidh Emaad ad-Deen Isma’eel Ibn Katheer (d. 774 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- was one of the greatest scholars of many sciences of the knowledge of  Islaam.  His most famous work is his Tafseer book called ‘Tafseer al-Qur’aan al-Atheem’. This Tafseer was based upon narrations of the Salaf, this is why it is regarded very highly as the second most important Tafseer Book after Tafseer at-Tabari called ‘Jamia al-Bayan un Taweel Ayaah al-Qur’aan’. He was a student of Shaykh ul Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah.
