A Husband Helping his Wife with the Household Duties

مساعدة الرجل زوجتَه

Translated by Abbas Abu Yahya

‘A man should help his wife with the housework and the household duties from cleaning, arranging the home and other duties, especially during the days she is pregnant with a fetus or after she has delivered the baby or when she is sick or when she has a lot of work to do.

Indeed the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam  used to help his family’s house duties and clean and brush his home, patch up his garment, mend his shoe and milk his sheep.

Aeysha -RadhiAllaahu anha- was asked : ‘What would the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam  do in his home?’

She said: ‘He would help his family’s house duties -meaning assist his family- when the prayer time would come in he would go to the prayer.’[1]

In the narration of Ahmad: ‘He was a human being from amongst mankind: he would patch up his garment, milk his sheep and serve himself.’[2]

In the wording of Ibn Hibban: ‘He would do what one of you does in helping his family : mend his shoe, sew his garment and patch his leather bucket.’[3]

Rather a husband could out do his wife in living with her with goodness, so that he remembers his wife after she passes away, with that which she used to love from him doing things for her – and this without doubt is from perfection of responsibility and having love for the wife.

From Aeysha -RadhiAllaahu anha- who said : ‘I was not jealous of any woman the like I was of Khadija. She passed away before I married the Messenger by three years. I would get jealous from what I would hear him remembering her with and indeed his Lord commanded him to give her the glad tidings of a house in Paradise made of hollow Pearls. The Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam used to slaughter a sheep then send it as a gift from her to her relatives.’[4]

The meaning of her relatives is her very close friends: meaning the people who were her friends.

In the hadeeth of Anas Radhi Allaahu anhu: ‘If the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam  would bring something he would say:

«اذْهَبُوا بِهِ إِلَى فُلاَنَةَ فَإِنَّهَا كَانَتْ صَدِيقَةً لِخَدِيجَةَ»

‘Take this to such and such woman she was a friend of Khadijah.’[5]

What also confirms this meaning is a hadeeth of Aeysha -RadhiAllaahu anha- who said:

‘An old woman came to the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam whilst he was with me, so the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam  said to her: ‘Who are you?’

She said : ‘I am Jathamatul Muzaneeyah[6].’

The Messenger said:

‘Rather you are Hasanatul Muzaneeyah[7]. How are you? How is your situation? How are you after us not being there?’

She said: ‘We are good – may my father and mother be sacrificed for you O Messenger of Allaah.’

When she left I said: ‘O Messenger of Allaah, you gave this old woman this type of reception?’

So the Messenger said:

إنها كانت تأتينا زمن خديجة ، و إن حسن العهد من الإيمان

‘Indeed she used to visit us at the time of Khadijah, and indeed having good dealings is from Eemaan.’[8] (10)
