Day 23 – The Hidden Shirk

Translated & Compiled

By

Abbas Abu Yahya

From Rubaih bin AbdurRahmaan bin Abi Sa’eed al-Khudri from his father from his grandfather who said:

The Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam came out to us whilst we were discussing the al-al-Masseh ad-Dajjal, and he said:

‘Shall I not inform you of that which I know to be more fearful than the al-Masseeh ad-Dajjal?’

We said: Of course O Messenger of Allaah.’

The Messenger said:

‘The hidden Shirk; that a man stands and prays, and he beautifies his prayer when he sees a person looking at him.

An Explanation

Shaykh AbdulAziz bin Abdullaah bin Baz  in his explanation of the chapter from ‘Kitab Tawheed’ said:

Chapter: What is mentioned about ar-Riyyah (Showing off)

Allaah Ta’ala said:

<<Say: “I am only a man like you. It has been inspired to me that your Ilâh is One Ilâh (i.e. Allaah). So whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord, let him do righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord.”>>

[Kahf: 110]

From Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘Allaah Azz awa Jal said: ‘I am the most free of having Shirk committed with Me. So, whoever did an action for Me and he associated Shirk with Me, then I have left him and his Shirk.’

Shaykh Bin Baz said:

‘Praise be to Allaah and His praise and security be upon the Messenger of Allaah, and upon his family and his companions and everyone who followed his guidance.

After that:

The author -Rahimahullaah- wrote this chapter to warn against ar-Riyyah (showing off) with deeds. This is because the righteous could perhaps be afflicted with ar-Riyyah (showing off). There are many people who are perhaps afflicted with ar-Riyyah (showing off) in their prayer, or recitation of Qur’aan or other matters from the Religion.

The author wrote this explanation to show the prohibition of this and warned against it, and that it is obligatory upon every male and female believer to have sincerity for Allaah in their deeds of prayer, fasting, recitation of Qur’aan and other matters.

Also to warn against resembling the hypocrites in ar-Riyyah (showing off) in actions.

The author -Rahimahullaah- wrote:  Chapter: What is mentioned about ar-Riyyah (Showing off), meaning, the chapter about what is mentioned about its ruling and an explanation of its danger.

ar-Riyyah (Showing off) means displaying your actions to the people, for example a person prays Dhuha or a similar prayer so that he is praised for it, and it is said that he prays a lot. Or that he comes to pray in congregation so that he can be praised for it, what was his intent, concern for the congregational prayer or recitation of Qur’aan so that he can be praised for it or other similar matters of good deeds.

Allaah Ta’ala said:

<<Say: “I am only a man like you. It has been inspired to me that your Ilâh is One Ilâh (i.e. Allaah). So whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord, let him do righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord.” >>

[Kahf: 110]

This is general for all types of Shirk, major and lesser. It is obligatory upon the believer to be warned of ar-Riyyah (showing off) in all his deeds.

This Hadeeth of Abu Saeed, where the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam said:

‘Shall I not inform you of that which I know to be more fearful than the al-Masseeh ad-Dajjal?’

We said: Of course O Messenger of Allaah.’

The Messenger said:

‘The hidden Shirk; that a man stands and prays, he beautifies his prayer when he sees a person looking at him.’

The person beautifies and perfects his prayer so that it would be said that he is a good person and he has tranquillity in his prayer. So he did not intend his prayer for the Face of Allaah, but his aim was to be praised for it, that he is tranquil in the prayer and he beautified it and this is a great danger.

It is obligatory to be careful of this, and that a person’s goal should be in his prayer and all his matters that it is for the Face of Allaah and the hereafter. He should not intend ar-Riyyah (showing off) to the people, or praise of the people, or their glory. This does not benefit him, their praise does not benefit him, nor their dispraise. What is obligatory is that a person’s action is for Allaah alone, whether it is reading Qur’aan, or prayer, or giving charity etc, it should be for Allaah Alone -the Mighty and Majestic- so showing off to the people is from lesser Shirk, which is obligatory to be cautioned against.

We ask Allaah for security and goodness for everyone.

Question: If a person is forced to mention his good deeds and he informs someone of them, is no ar-Riyyah (Showing off) in this?

Answer:

No, this is not ar-Riyyah (Showing off), when he is asked, do you fast Monday and Thursday and he says, yes, he did not intend ar-Riyyah (Showing off) but he merely intended notifying.’
