Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah (d.728) -Rahimullaah- said:

‘Like Allaah said:

<<Verily! He has no power over those who believe and put their trust only in their Lord (Allaah). His power is only over those who obey and follow him (Satan), and those who join partners with Him (Allaah) [i.e. those who are Mushrikûn – polytheists>> [Nahl: 99-100]

and when the Shaytaan said:

<<  [Iblîs (Satan)] said: ‘O my Lord! Because You misled me, I shall indeed adorn the path of error for them (mankind) on the earth, and I shall mislead them all. >> [al-Hijr: 39]

Allaah Ta’ala said:

<<‘Certainly, you shall have no authority over My slaves, except those who follow you of the Ghâwîn (Mushrikûn and those who go astray, polytheists, and evil-doers, etc.). >> [al-Hijr: 42]

Allaah Ta’ala said:

<< ‘Certainly, you shall have no authority over My slaves, except those who follow you of the Ghâwîn (Mushrikûn and those who go astray, polytheists, and evil-doers, etc.). ‘And surely, Hell is the promised place for them all. ‘It (Hell) has seven gates, for each of those gates is a (special) class (of sinners) assigned.>> [al-Hijr: 42-44]

Therefore, the people who have sincerity and al-Eemaan then the Shaytaan has no authority over them.’

[From: ‘Naboowaat’ p.400]

Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah said in another place:

‘As for the clear well-known Bida’, like the Bida of the Khawarij, Rawafidah, Qadareeyah and the Murjia’, then nothing of the sort was known of that from the Companions.  Rather their well-established statements indicate then being in agreement with the Book and the Sunnah.

Likewise, also what was not known from them was that the people of the unseen (Jinn etc) would gather with them with Khidr or other than him.

Also that the Prophets would come to them in a conscious state and they would carry them to Arafat etc. This is what occurs a lot from the ignorant worshippers. They thought that this was a blessing (a sign) from Allaah, but rather it is Shaytaan deviating them.

The Shayateen were unsuccessful in their greed to make the Companions fall into the likes of this.  Indeed they used to know that all of this was from the Shaytaan, and the people of the unseen were the Jinn.

Allaah Ta’ala said:

<< ‘And verily, there were men among mankind who took shelter with the masculine among the Jinns, but they (Jinns) increased them (mankind) in sin and disbelief. >> [Jinn: 6]

Likewise, the Shaytaan was unsuccessful in causing the Companions from making Shirk with the inmates of graves.’
