Imam ash-Shatabi -Rahimahullaah- said:

‏”ولما كثرت البدع والمخالفات ، وتواطأ الناس عليها ؛ صار الجاهل يقول : لو كان هذا منكرا لما فعله الناس”

‘When Bida & opposition to the Sunnah increased and the people accepted them, to such an extent that an ignorant person would say: ‘If a bida was evil the people would not do them.’

‏قال الإمام الشاطبي :
