Ahadeeth Pertaining to Repentance, Admonition
& Softening of the Heart

No. 12
12 – 1325 – From Abdullaah bin ‘Amr who said: We were with the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ while the people mentioned Fitna (Trials & Tribulations) or Fitna was mentioned to the Messenger and he said:
إذا رأيت الناس قد مرجت عهودهم، وخفت أماناتهم وكانوا هكذا
‘When you find that the people’s commitments / promise /obligations have become corrupt, and their trusts have diminished, and they used to be like this.’
: and he -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- clenched between his fingers.
The narrator said: So I stood up towards him and asked him:
‘What should I do at that time, may Allaah make me a sacrifice for you?’
The Messenger ﷺ said:
الزم بيتك، واملك عليك لسانك، وخذ ما تعرف، ودع ما تنكر،
وعليك بأمر خاصة نفسك، ودع عنك أمر العامة
‘Stick to your homes, and hold back from speaking out, take the truth and leave off falsehood, and stick to matters which are specific to yourself, and leave the matter which is a general matter for the people.’

ARABIC
حدثني عبد الله بن عمرو قال:
” بينما نحن حول رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، إذ ذكروا الفتنة، أو ذكرت
عنده، قال:
” إذا رأيت الناس قد مرجت عهودهم، وخفت أماناتهم وكانوا هكذا: وشبك بين أصابعه، قال (الراوي) : فقمت إليه فقلت له: كيف أفعل عند ذلك جعلني الله
فداك؟ قال: الزم بيتك، واملك عليك لسانك، وخذ ما تعرف، ودع ما تنكر،
وعليك بأمر خاصة نفسك، ودع عنك أمر العامة “.
أخرجه أبو داود والحاكم وأحمد
وقال الحاكم: ” صحيح الإسناد “. ووافقه الذهبي.
