A – Abu Hatim ar-Razi – (d. 277 A.H.)

Muhammad bin Idris bin al-Mundhir at-Tameemi al-Hanthali ar-Razi, (d. 277 A.H.)
Born in 195 A.H

Ibn Abi Hatim said, I heard my father saying, when I first went out in search of Hadeeth I went for many years, I calculated that I walked more than one thousand Farsakh (approximately 6,000 kilometres) but after that I stopped counting.’

I also heard my father saying,

‘I visited Basara in the year 214 A.H. for 8 months. I had decided to stay there for one year, however, my provisions had ended, so I began selling my clothing piece by piece and I had nothing left to sell.’

[Tahdheeb at-Tahdheeb]

Al-Khateeb said:

‘He was one of the well-established Imams well known for memorising and knowledge. He is regarded with excellence and his first book of hadeeth was in the year 209 A.H.’

[Tahdheeb at-Tahdheeb]

Abul Hussain Muhammad bin Ibraheem bin Shu’aib al-Ghazi at-Tabari said:

‘When you see a person who is Razi or a Khurasani who loves Abu Hatim and Abu Zur’ah then know that he is a person of Sunnah.’

[Tahdheeb al-Kamal]

B – Abdurahman Ibn Abi Hatim ar-Razi – (d. 327 A.H.)

Abdurahman Ibn Abi Hatim ar-Razi (d. 327 A.H.) compiled a very important and famous book titled: ‘Kitab al-Jarh wa Tadeel’.
Most of the book was questions to his famous father Abu Hatim ar-Razi, whose name was Muhammad bin Idris bin al-Mundhir at-Tameemi al-Hanthali ar-Razi, who died in the year 277 A.H.
His famous cousin from his mother’s side was Abu Zura’ah ar-Razi, whose name was Ubaydullaah bin Abdulkareem bin Yazeed bin Farookh bin Dawood, who died in the year 264 A.H.
Imam ad-Dhahabi  mentioned that Ibn Mahrawiya heard Yahya bin Ma’een saying:

إنا لنطعن على أقوام، لعلهم قد حطو ارحالهم في الجنة من أكثر من مائتي سنة

‘Indeed, we criticise people, who perhaps have already had their saddle bags placed in Paradise before two hundred years’ (Meaning: we label them as weak narrators, or liars etc and perhaps Allaah has forgiven them. This was from Yahya bin Ma’aeen’s concern.)

Ibn Mahrawiya said:

‘So, I visited Abdurahman bin Abi Hatim and he was reading the book ‘Kitab al-Jarh wa Tadeel’ to the people.
I narrated the story to him, and he began to cry, his hand trembled so much that the Book fell from his hands,  and he cried and asked me to repeat the story.’

Ad-Dhahabi commented on this story by saying:

‘Ibn Abi Hatim was affected due to the fear and dread of the punishment of the Hereafter.
Since the speech about weak narrators, by the critical researcher who has fear of Allaah, is from sincerity for the Deen of Allaah and it is defence of the Sunnah.’

[Seera alaam an-Nubala p.000]

C – Abu Zura’ah ar-Razi – (d. 264 A.H.)

Abu Zura’ah, UbaydAllaah bin Abdulkareem bin Yazeed al-Makhzoomi ar-Razi

‘He is from the Imams of Hadeeth. It has been said, any Hadeeth which Abu Zura’ah does not know then it does not have an origin.

He had visited Baghdad and narrated Hadeeth there and sat with Ahmad bin Hanbal. He had memorised a hundred thousand Hadeeth.’

Ibn Rajab said:

‘He is one of the famous ones, and a preserver of Islaam, and he had a great status of righteousness, worship and awe of Allaah.’

[Sharh Illal at-Tirmidhi 1/221-224]

Abul-Abbas Muhammad bin Ishaq ath-Thaqafi said:

‘When Qutaybah bin Sa’eed went to ar-Raai, the people asked him to narrate Hadeeth to them, but he refused, and he said to them: ‘Should I narrate to you after having Ahmad bin Hanbal, Ali bin al-Madini, Yahya bin Ma’een, Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Shaybah, Abu Khaythama attend my sittings?!’

They said to him: Indeed we have a youngster here who can present every Hadeeth one after another which you narrated from everyone of those gatherings, stand up Abu Zur’ah.’  So he stood up and narrated every hadeeth which Ibn Qutaybah narrated one after the other. Then Qutaybah narrated Hadeeth to them.’

[Collected by al-Khateeb in Tareekh Bagdad, Ibn Assakir in Tareekh Dimishq and in Seera A’alaam an-Nubala]

Ali bi al-Hussain bin al-Junaid said:

‘I never saw anyone more knowledgeable about the Hadeeth of Malik – those which were narrated with connected chains and disconnected ones- than Abu Zur’ah! Likewise with other Islamic sciences, but particularly the Hadeeth of Malik. It was asked, are you talking about the book al-Muwatta and the extra narrations which are not in al-Muwatta? He answered: ‘Yes’.

[Collected by Ibn Abi Hatim in the introduction to his book ‘al-Jarh wa Ta’adeel’, Ibn Asakir and in Seera A’alam an-Nubala]

Ibn Rowat said I heard Ishaq bin Rahwaya saying:

‘Every Hadeeth which Abu Zur’ah does not know then it does not have a foundation.’

[Collected by al-Khateeb in Tareekh Baghdad, Ibn Aasakir in Tareekh Dimishq, Ibn Adi in al-Kamil, Seera A’alam an-Nubala & Tahzeeb al-Kamal]

Abu Hatim said:

‘Those who knew about the authentic Hadeeth from the weak ones, and were distinct in that, and were good at defects in hadeeth, were Ahmad bin Hanbal, Yahya bin Ma’een, Ali bin Madini and after them Abu Zur’ah and he was good at that. It was asked: Do you know anyone other than them nowadays? He replied, No.’

A – Abdullaah Ad-Darmi – (d. 255 A.H.)

Abu Muhammad Abdullaah bin AbdurRahman bin al-Fadl at-Tameemi Ad-Darmi as-Samarqandi  was born in the year 181 A. H. and died in the year 255 A.H.

He authored a book titled ‘Sunnan’ and a book called ‘al-Musnad’
Some of those who narrated from him were, Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi, Abu Zura’ah ar-Razi and Abu Hatim ar-Razi, Abdullaah bin Ahmad bin Hanbal and others.

Muhammad bin Bashar Bundar said:

‘The memorisers in the Dunya are four:
Abu Zura’ah from ar-Raai,

Muslim in Nisaboor,

ad-Darmi in Samarqand

and al-Bukhari in Bukhara.’

Abu Hatim ar-Razi said:

‘He is an Imam of the people of his time.’

Abu Hamid ibn ash-Sharqi said:

‘There are five men who qualified from Khurasan from the Imams of Hadeeth: ad-Dhuhali, Bukhari, Darmi, Muslim and Ibraheem bin Abi Talib.’

Ibn Hibban said:

‘He was from the precise memorisers, and those who took caution over their Deen. He was from those who memorised, compiled narrations, studied, wrote and narrated Hadeeth. He made the Sunnah apparent in his country and called the people to it. He defended the nobility of the Sunnah and refuted the one who opposed it.’

[Seera A’alaam]

B – Uthmaan bin Saeed Ad-Darmi – (d. 280 A.H.)

Abu Saeed Uthmaan bin Saeed bin Khalid at-Tameemi ad-Darmi as-Sijistani was born before 200 A.H. and died in the year 280 A.H.
He authored the book ‘Radd ala Al-Jahmeeyah’ & ‘Radd ala al-Jahmi Bishr al-Mirisi’.

Uthmaan ad-Darmi narrated from Ahmad bin Hanbal, Musaddad bin Mussarhad, Yahya bin Ma’een, Ali bin al-Madini, Is’haq bin Rahawayyah, Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, Abi al-Yaman, Sulaiman bin Harb, Abu Salmah at-Tabuthki, Abu Rabee az-Zahrani and many others.

Imam Dhahabi said:

‘He travelled the lands seeking Hadeeth. He acquired knowledge of Hadeeth and the defects of Hadeeth from Ali bin al-Madini, Ahmad bin Hanbal, Yahya bin Ma’een, and he surpassed the people at his time. He was dedicated to the Sunnah, with knowledge and he would debate with it, and he was a tree stump in the eyes of the people of Bida’.

Imam Dhahabi also said: Uthmaan bin Sa’eed said:

‘Whoever does not gather the Hadeeth of Shu’abah, Sufyan, Malik, Hamad bin Zaid and Sufyan bin Uayina then he is poor in Hadeeth.’ – he means that he has not reached the level of Huffath (the precise memorisers).

There is no doubt, that whoever does not gather the knowledge of these five Imams, and comprehends the rest of their Hadeeth, and records narrations from higher and lower chains, and understands their defects then he has indeed encompassed half of the Prophetic Sunnah, in fact more than that and indeed in our time it is non-existent for anyone to embark on this or even some of it, and we ask Allaah for forgiveness.

Also, if a person intended to follow up just the Hadeeth of Thawri and to write them with the same long chains, and to clarify the authentic hadeeth from the weak ones, then he would have to pay attention to his ‘Musnad’ which is of ten volumes

But in fact, the matter for the Muhaddith (scholar of Hadeeth) nowadays is to have concern and pay attention to the six collections, the Musnad of Ahmad bin Hanbal, the Sunan of al-Bayhaqi and to have precision in their texts and chains.

Then this does not benefit unless that person fears his Lord, and takes the Hadeeth as Deen. Then him who weeps, let him weep for the science of Hadeeth and its scholars, because Islaam has returned back to its pure form strange as it began.

Therefore, the matter is about freeing yourself from the Hell fire, and there is no might or strength except from Allaah.

Also, having knowledge is not narrating a lot of  Hadeeth, however, it is Noor (light)  which Allaah casts into the heart, and its condition is following the Prophet, and escaping desires and Bida’, may Allaah give us and you success in being obedient to Him.’
