A youngster from the people of knowledge attended a gathering of Sufyaan ath-Thawri, the youngster went and sat at the head of the gathering and began speaking, and was behaving arrogantly with knowledge over and above those who were older than him, so Sufyaan became angry and said:
« لم يكن السلف هكذا ، كان أحدهم لا يدعي الإمامة ، ولا يجلس في الصدر حتى يطلب هذا العلم ثلاثين سنة ، وأنت تتكبر على من هو أسن منك ، قم عني ولا أراك تدنو من مجلسي»
‘The Salaf were not like this, none of them used to claim religious leadership, nor would they sit at the head of a gathering until they sought knowledge for thirty years, and you being proud and arrogant over the one who is older than you in age. Go away from me and I do not want to see you coming close to my gatherings.’
Abu Aasim also said I heard Sufyaan ath-Thawri saying:
« إذا رأيت الشاب يتكلم عند المشايخ وإن كان قد بلغ من العلم مبلغا ؛ فآيس من خيره ، فإنه قليل الحياء » .
‘If you see a youngster speaking in the presence of Shaykhs even though he has reached a high level of knowledge then despair at his goodness, since he has little modesty.’

قال أبو عاصم : حضر شاب من أهل العلم مجلسَ سفيان الثوري ، وهو يترأس ويتكلم ، ويتكبر بالعلم على من هو أكبر منه ، فغضب سفيان وقال :
« لم يكن السلف هكذا ، كان أحدهم لا يدعي الإمامة ، ولا يجلس في الصدر حتى يطلب هذا العلم ثلاثين سنة ، وأنت تتكبر على من هو أسن منك ، قم عني ولا أراك تدنو من مجلسي»
