Praise be to Allaah and Peace and prayers be upon the Messenger of Allaah and upon hisStatus of Prayer Family and his Companions and those who follow his guidance.

To Proceed:

Indeed the prayer in Islaam is a great matter, and its status is very high according to Allaah and His Messenger and the believers, since it is the second pillar after the testification, from the pillars of Islaam.

From Ibn Umar –RadhiAllahu anhu- that the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘Islaam has been built on five [pillars]: testifying that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah, performing the prayers, paying the Zakat, making the pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan.’

Allaah encouraged the believers to establish the prayer in many Ayaat, from them is:

The saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

مُنِيبِينَ إِلَيْهِ وَاتَّقُوهُ وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَلَا تَكُونُوا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ

مِنَ الَّذِينَ فَرَّقُوا دِينَهُمْ وَكَانُوا شِيَعًا كُلُّ حِزْبٍ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ فَرِحُونَ

<< Always Turning in repentance to Him Alone, and be afraid and dutiful to Him; and perform As-Salah  (the prayer) and be not of Mushrikeen. Of those who split up their religion, and became sects, each sect rejoicing in that which is with it. >>

[Room: 31-32]

The saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

وَمَا أُمِرُوا إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ حُنَفَاءَ وَيُقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَذَلِكَ دِينُ الْقَيِّمَةِ

<< And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allaah, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him), and perform As-Salât and give Zakât: and that is the right religion. >>

[Bayyinah: 5]

The saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

قُلْ لِعِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يُقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَيُنْفِقُوا مِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ سِرًّا وَعَلَانِيَةً مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَأْتِيَ يَوْمٌ لَا بَيْعٌ فِيهِ وَلَا خِلَالٌ

<< Say to My slaves who have believed, that they should perform As-Salât, and spend in charity out of the sustenance We have given them, secretly and openly, before the coming of a Day on which there will be neither mutual bargaining nor befriending. >> [Ibraheem: 31]

From the supplication of the Friend of ar-Rahmaan, Ibraheem –alayhi sallam:

رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةِ وَمِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِي رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَاءِ

<< O my Lord! Make me one who performs As-Salât, and (also) from my offspring, our Lord! And accept my invocation.’ >>

[Ibraheem: 40]

Allaah obligated the prayer upon every mature Muslim who has an intellect.

He legislated training youngsters upon the prayer. ‘Teach your children the prayer when they reach the age of seven and use force upon them at the age of ten.’

Allaah commanded that the prayer be prayed in congregation in the houses of Allaah, which are none other than the Masajid.  Allaah commends those who pray in the Masajid, and He mentioned their praiseworthy characteristics and with what He has prepared for them from the great reward.

Allaah Ta’ala said:

<< In houses (Masajid), which Allaah has ordered to be raised (to be cleaned, and to be honoured), in them His Name is glorified in the mornings and in the afternoons or the evenings. Men whom neither trade nor sale diverts them from the Remembrance of Allaah, nor from performing As-Salât, nor from giving the Zakât. They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will be overturned (from the horror of the torment of the Day of Resurrection). That Allaah may reward them according to the best of their deeds, and add even more for them out of His Grace. And Allaah provides without measure to whom He wills >>

[Noor: 36-38]

Allaah Ta’ala said:

إِنَّمَا يَعْمُرُ مَسَاجِدَ اللَّهِ مَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَأَقَامَ الصَّلَاةَ وَآتَى الزَّكَاةَ وَلَمْ يَخْشَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ فَعَسَى أُولَئِكَ أَنْ يَكُونُوا مِنَ الْمُهْتَدِينَ

<< The Masajid of Allaah shall be maintained only by those who believe in Allaah and the Last Day; perform As-Salât, and give Zakât and fear none but Allaah. It is they who are expected to be on true guidance. >>

[Tawbah: 18]

Allaah Ta’ala said:

قُلْ أَمَرَ رَبِّي بِالْقِسْطِ وَأَقِيمُوا وُجُوهَكُمْ عِنْدَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ وَادْعُوهُ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ كَمَا بَدَأَكُمْ تَعُودُونَ

<< Say: My Lord has commanded justice and (said) that you should face Him only in each and every place of worship, in prayer, and invoke Him Alone making your religion sincere to Him by not joining in worship any partner to Him. As He brought you (into being) in the beginning, so shall you be brought into being (on the Day of Resurrection)>>

[Ara’af: 29]

Allaah ordered His slaves to have fairness, which is justice, and to be upright and to face the Qiblah (the Ka’abah) in whichever Masjid you may be.

Allaah Ta’ala said:

يَا بَنِي آدَمَ خُذُوا زِينَتَكُمْ عِنْدَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلَا تُسْرِفُوا إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ

<< O Children of Adam! Take your adornment (by wearing your clean clothes), while praying, and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly Allaah does not like those who waste by extravagance.>>

[Ara’af: 31]

The meaning of adornment here is covering your private parts in the congregational prayer in the Masajid, or whether praying alone, rather covering the private parts is obligatory in all circumstances and ‘Allaah has more of a right that you are bashful of Him.’

The evidence from all these Ayaat is the explanation of the importance of Masajid of which Allaah ordered the building of, so prayer could be established there in congregation.  The Masajid are from the greatest signs of Islaam.

Prayer in congregation and the call to prayer in the Masajid are from the greatest practices of Islaam.  Staying away from establishing the prayer in congregation is from the signs of hypocrisy and Allaah’s refuge is sought.

Allaah Ta’ala said about the prayer:

وَاسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى الْخَاشِعِينَ () الَّذِينَ يَظُنُّونَ أَنَّهُمْ مُلَاقُو رَبِّهِمْ وَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

<< And seek help in patience and As-Salât (the prayer) and truly it is extremely heavy and hard except for those who have awe of Allaah. They are those who are certain that they are going to meet their Lord, and that unto Him they are going to return.>>

[Baqarah: 45-46]

From Abu Huraira –RadhiAllahu anhu- who said: the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘Indeed the most difficult prayer for the hypocrites is the Isha prayer and the Fajr prayer. If they knew what those prayers contained, they would attend those prayers even if they had to crawl.  I would like to order for the prayer to be established then order a man to lead the people in prayer, then I would go with some men with me and they would have a bundle of wood for a fire with them, to those who do not attend the prayer, and burn their houses upon them with fire.’

[Collected by Bukhari & Muslim]

From Abdullaah bin Mas’ood –RadhiAllahu anhu- who said: Indeed we saw that none stays away from the prayer except a hypocrite whose hypocrisy is known or a sick person. If a person is a sick then he should walk between two people until he reaches the prayer.  Then Ibn Mas’ood –RadhiAllahu anhu- said:

Indeed the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- taught us the Sunnah from guidance, indeed from the Sunnah of guidance is the prayer in the Masjid in which the Adhaan is called.’

[Collected by Muslim]

The Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- explained the excellence of prayer in congregation.

From Abu Huraira –RadhiAllahu anhu- from the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- who said:

‘The excellence of the prayer in congregation above that of a man praying on his own is twenty-five times more. The Angels of the night and the Angels of the day gather together at the Fajr prayer.’

Abu Huraira –RadhiAllahu anhu- said: Read if you want: <<and recite the Qur’aan in the early dawn (i.e. the morning prayer). Verily, the recitation of the Qur’aan in the early dawn is ever witnessed (attended by the angels in charge of mankind of the day and the night). >>’

[Collected by Muslim & Bukhari]

From Ibn Umar –RadhiAllahu anhu- that the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘Congregational prayer is better than prayer of a person by himself by twenty-seven times.’

[Collected by Muslim & Bukhari]

From Abu Huraira –RadhiAllahu anhu- who said: the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘The prayer of a man in congregation is multiplied more than his prayer in his home and in the market place by twenty-five times.  If he makes Wudoo and makes it correctly then goes out to the Masjid, and he does not go to the Masjid except for the prayer. He does not take a step except that he is raised a grade due to that and a sin is taken away due to it.  When he prays the Angels continue to pray for him as long as he is praying. O Allaah send prayers upon him, O Allaah have mercy upon him, one is continuous in the prayer as long as he is waiting for the prayer.’

[Collected by Muslim & Bukhari]

Prayer expiates sins

From Abu Huraira –RadhiAllahu anhu- who said he heard the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- saying:

‘Do you not see that if one of you had a flowing river in front of your house and he washed from that river five times every day, would there remain any dirt on him?’

They said: ‘There would not remain any dirt on him.’

Then he said:

‘That is like the five daily prayers take away sins.’

[Collected by Muslim & Bukhari]

From Jabir bn Abdullaah –RadhiAllahu anhu- who said: the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘The like of the five daily prayers is the like of an over flowing river by the door of one of you, where he washes from five times every day.’

[Collected by Muslim & Ahmad]

Applying the Term ‘Disbelief’ to the one who does not Pray

From Jabir bin Abdullaah al-Ansaari –RadhiAllahu anhu- who said: I heard the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- saying:

‘Indeed between a man and between Shirk and disbelief is leaving off the prayer.’

Collected by Muslim in ‘al-Eemaan’ & Abu Dawood in ‘Kitab as-Sunnah’ with the wording:

‘Between the slave of Allaah and between disbelief is leaving the prayer.’

Tirmidhi collected it in ‘chapters of al-Eemaan’ with the wording:

‘Between disbelief and al-Eemaan is leaving the prayer.’

Also, in another wording:

‘Between the slave of Allaah and between Shirk or disbelief is leaving the prayer.’

From Abdullaah bin Buraydah from his father who said the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘The contract which is between us and between them is the prayer, so the one who left it has indeed committed disbelief.’

[Collected by Tirmidhi]

The scholars differed regarding the intent of the word ‘disbelief’, there are from them who view it is major disbelief, which takes a person outside of the Muslim Ummah.  The evidence of the one who declares him to be a disbeliever, is this hadeeth and the saying of Abdullaah bin Shaqeeq: ‘The Companions of the Messenger of Allaah never used to regard leaving anything of actions as disbelief except the prayer.’

There is also other evidence for this.

There are from the scholars who view it as minor disbelief, which does not take a person outside the Muslim Ummah, except if he views it as permissible to leave it, since by doing that he has committed disbelief, which is the major disbelief, and this is in consensus.  The evidence for those one who do not hold it that he does not take him outside of Islaam, is the saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ وَمَنْ يُشْرِكْ بِاللَّهِ فَقَدِ افْتَرَى إِثْمًا عَظِيمًا

<< Verily, Allaah does not forgive that partners should be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases, and whoever sets up partners with Allaah in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin. >>

[Nisa’:48]

The majority of scholars from the Salaf and those who came after them said that he should repent, if he does not repent then he should be given capital punishment, [and the one who is responsible for capital punishment is the legislated ruler not individuals and nor the common folk.]

Abu Hanifah and some of the scholars held the opinion that capital punishment is not given, rather he is rebuked and imprisoned until he prays.

The Obligation of Straightening the Rows in the Prayer and Filling the Gaps in the Rows

Imam Ahmad said in his ‘Musnad’:

From Abdullaah bin Umar that the Messenger of Allaah said:

‘Straighten the rows indeed you make your rows with the rows of the Angels, and line your shoulders [in the prayer] and close the gaps and be gentle regarding your brothers if you have to move forward or back and do not leave gaps for the Shaytaan, and whoever connects up the rows, then Allaah Tabaraka wa Ta’ala connects him up and whoever breaks the row then Allaah breaks him up.’

Imam Ahmad -Rahimullaah- said in his ‘Musnad’:

From Abu Umamah who said: the Messenger of Allaah said:

‘Indeed Allaah and His Angels send prayers on those who pray in the first row.’

The people asked: ‘O Messenger of Allaah and the second row.’

He said:

‘Indeed Allaah and His Angels send prayers on those who pray in the first row.’

The people asked: ‘O Messenger of Allaah and the second row.’

The Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said and the second.’

Then the Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- continued:

‘Straighten your rows and line your shoulders [in the prayer] be gentle regarding your brothers if you have to move forward or back and close the gaps, since indeed the Shaytaan enters between you just like a small black goat, the like of a small baby lamb.’

[It is Hasan due to its supporting evidence.]

Imam Abu Daawood said in his ‘Sunnan’ that the Messenger of Allaah said:

‘Straighten the rows and line your shoulders [in the prayer], and close the gaps and be gentle regarding your brothers if you have to move forward or back.’ [Isa did not mention and be gentle regarding your brothers if you have to move forward or back and do not leave gaps for the Shaytaan, and whoever connects up the rows, then Allaah Tabaraka wa Ta’ala connects him up and whoever breaks the row then Allaah breaks him up].’

Abu Daawood said: ‘And the meaning of ‘and be gentle regarding your brothers if you have to move forward or back’ is if a person comes to the row for prayer and wants to enter the row, then it is necessary for every person to pull their shoulders in, so that the person can enter into the row.’  [Saheeh due to its supporting evidences.]

From Anas bin Malik –RadhiAllahu anhu- that he Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam-  said:

‘Straighten up your rows, since straightening the row is from the perfection of the prayer.’

[Collected by Ahmad, Bukhari & Muslim]

Also from Anas bin Malik –RadhiAllahu anhu- who said the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam used to face towards us before he said the Takbeer and said:

‘Come close together and be straight.’

[Collected by Bukhari & Muslim]

From Nu’man bin Basheer who said: the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- used to level up our rows as if he was lining up an arrow before the arrow head is place on it. Then he came out one day and stood for the prayer until he was about to say the Takbeer, and he saw a man with his chest sticking out of the row, so the Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘O slaves of Allaah straighten up your rows otherwise Allaah will make your faces differ.’

Collected by the group except Bukhari, since in his narration it says:

‘Straighten up your rows otherwise Allaah will make your faces differ.’

And in the narration of Ahmad and Abu Daawood he said:

‘so I saw a man stick his ankle to the ankle of his companions next to him, and his knee to his knee and his shoulder to his shoulder.’

[Collected in ‘al-Muntaqa’ by Majd Ibn Taymeeyah, Ahmad, Muslim, Tirmidhi, Abu Daawood & Nisa’ee]

From Jabir bin Samrah –RadhiAllahu anhu- who said: the Messenger of Allaah sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam came out to us and said:

‘Why do you not make your rows like the Angels do in the presence of their Lord?’

We said: ‘O Messenger of Allaah how do the Angels make rows in the presence of their Lord?’

He -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘They complete the first row and are close together in the row.’

[Collected by Ahmad in his ‘Musnad’, Muslim, Abu Daawood & Nisa’ee]

From Ibn Mas’ood –RadhiAllahu anhu- who said: ‘The Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- used to touch our shoulders in the prayer and say straighten and do not differ so that your hearts differ. Those from the gentle and intelligent ones should be behind me, then those after them then those after them.’  Ibn Mas’ood said: and today you have severe differences.’

From Ibn Mas’ood –RadhiAllahu anhu- who said that the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘Those from the gentle and intelligent ones should be behind me, then those after them.’ He said this three times, then he said: ‘Beware of the clamour of the market places.’

[Both narrations collected by Muslim & Tirmidhi]

The Importance of the Sutrah

From amongst the important matters of the prayer is that that worshipper should take a Sutrah, which intervenes between him and the person walking in front of him.  This Sutrah can be a person or other than a person, there are many Ahadeeth from the Messenger of Allaah in which the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- commanded the worshipper to take a Sutrah, from them is:

1 – From Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri –RadhiAllahu anhu- who said: that the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘If one of you prays then he should take a Sutrah and come close to it.’

[Collected by Abu Dawood & Ibn Majah]

2- From Ibn Umar –RadhiAllahu anhu- who said:

‘When the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- used to go out to the prayer on the day of Eid, he would command that a spear be brought. It would be placed in front of him and he would pray towards it, the people would be behind him. He would also do that on his travels.’

[Collected by Bukhari & Muslim]

The Distance between the person praying & the Sutrah

3 – From Sahl bin Sa’ad –RadhiAllahu anhu- who said:

‘Between the Prophet’s standing place for prayer and the wall was enough distance for a sheep to pass by.’

[Collected by Bukhari & Muslim]

4 – From Bilal –RadhiAllahu anhu- that the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- entered the Ka’abah and prayed. Between him and the wall was the distance of three forearm lengths.’

[Collected by Ahmad & Nisa’ee]

The legislation of Preventing the Passer-by from Walking in between the worshipper and the Sutrah and the Sin which is upon the Passer-by

From Abu Sa’eed –RadhiAllahu anhu- who said: I heard the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- saying:

‘If one of you prays towards something, which shields him from the people, and a person wants to walk past between him and the Sutrah, then he should prevent him, and if the person refuses to stop trying to pass then fight him, since indeed he is a Shaytaan.’

[Collected by all the six books of Ahadeeth except Tirmidhi]

From Abu Juhaym Abdullaah bin al-Harith al-Ansari who said: the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘If the person walking between the worshipper and his Sutrah knew what would be upon him, then he would indeed wait for forty, and this would be better for him than walking in front of the worshipper.’

Therefore, these Ahadeeth indicate to the Muslim the importance of taking the Sutrah in the prayer and its status in the prayer.  Many of the people have become lax towards the issue of the Sutrah, its importance and its status.

I ask Allaah that He gives the Muslims the capability to recognize the status of the Sutrah, and that He gives them the capability to implement the orders of the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- and establish them in the best and most perfect way.

Finally I say:

Indeed from the effects of the prayer, which is established as it is legislated, and that which has the necessary sincerity (Ikhlaas), and it is completed with its conditions and its pillars and its humbleness (Khushoo), the result is success, and it is the greatest success which is needed from Allaah.

Allaah Ta’ala said:

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ () الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ () وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ اللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَ () وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِلزَّكَاةِ فَاعِلُونَ

<< Successful indeed are the believers. Those who offer their Salât (prayers) with all solemnity and full submissiveness.  And those who turn away from evil speech. And those who pay the Zakât . >>

[al-Muminoon: 1-4]

From the effects of the prayer is that it prevents from great sins and evil wicked deeds and that Allaah mentions you to a higher gathering.

Allaah Ta’ala said:

إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَى عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ وَلَذِكْرُ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ

<< Verily, As-Salât (the prayer) prevents evil actions and wicked deeds and Allaah remembering you (in front of the angels) is greater indeed [than your remembering Allaah in prayers]. And Allaah knows what you do.>>

[Ankaboot:45]

My intent from this article is to remind my Muslim brothers with the importance of this great prayer and its status in Islaam.

Also to encourage them to establish the prayer in the houses of Allaah. And to encourage them – from what I see that many of the Muslims who pray, and those Imams who lead the prayer do not take concern with – straightening the rows and placing ones shoulder close to the next person’s shoulder, and ones ankle to the next person’s ankle, and to close up the gaps which Shaytaan comes in between.

I see many of those who pray are negligent of the matters which the Companions of Muhammad -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- used to adhere to it, to implement his commands, and directives, and they do not recognize the consequences of neglect regarding this, and that is what the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- warned against by his statement: ‘You must straighten your rows or Allaah will make your faces differ.’

This is the bitter, tangible result in the lives of the Muslims with what Shaytaan spreads between them from breaking ties and separation and enmity and division.

From the most important reasons for these problems is their opposition to the guidance of the Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- and the guidance of his Companions in establishing the prayer according to the way which the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- explained it, and how he warned against opposing it.

I ask Allaah that He gives the Muslims success, I adhering to the Book of their Lord, and the Sunnah of the Prophet and to follow the Manhaj of the Salaf as-Salih in their beliefs, their worship, and in all the rest of matters of their life.

And that He makes us from those who are successful, for whom their prayer prevents them from great sins and evil wicked deeds, indeed my Lord is the One who hears supplications.

May Allaah send Prayers and Peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon his Family and his Companions.
