1 – Hadeeth

From Abu Hurairah RadhiAllaahu anhu from the Prophet  -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam who said:

‘Is one of you so weak that when you pray, that you do not go forward or back or move on to the right or on to the left : meaning the prayer.’

[Collected by Abu Dawood, Ibn Majah  and authenticated by Al-Albaani]

2 – Shaykh Ibn al-Uthaymeen -Rahimahullaah

The Question:

‘Is there any proof to show that a person should move to a different place to pray the Sunnah prayer after praying the obligatory prayer?’

The Answer: Yes, it is mentioned in the hadeeth of Muwaweeyah -RadhiAllaahu anhu- that he said:

‘Indeed, the Prophet ﷺ ordered us not to pray another prayer until we spoke or exited from the Masjid.’

So, the people of knowledge took from this that it is necessary to separate between the obligatory prayer and the Sunnah prayer, either by speaking or moving from the place one prayed.

From al-Azraq bin Qays that a man prayed with the Prophet ﷺ then he stood to pray two Rakah, so Umar leapt forward and grabbed him by the shoulder and shook him then said:

ﺍﺟﻠﺲ ﻓﺈﻧﻪ ﻟﻢ ﻳﻬﻠﻚ ﺃﻫﻞ ﺍﻟﻜﺘﺎﺏ ﺇﻻ‌ ﺃﻧﻪ ﻟﻢ ﻳﻜﻦ ﺑﻴﻦ ﺻﻼ‌ﺗﻬﻢ ﻓﺼﻞ ،

‘Sit down since indeed the people of the Book were not destroyed as long as they separated between their prayers. ‘

The Prophet ﷺ looked up and said:

ﺃﺻﺎﺏ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﺑﻚ ﻳﺎ ﺍﺑﻦ ﺍﻟﺨﻄﺎﺏ

‘Allaah has made you correct O Ibn al -Khattab.’

[Collected by Abu Dawood and authenticated by Al-Albaani]

3 –   Shaykh ul Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah  Rahimahullaah

‘The Sunnah is to separate between the obligatory prayer and optional prayer in Jumma and other prayers.  It is established from the Prophet in Saheeh al-Bukhari that the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- prohibited to continue a prayer with another prayer until they are separated with standing or speech. So, one should not do what many of the people do, which is, as soon as a person gives Salam from one prayer he straight away starts with another two Rakah of Sunnah. In doing so it is perpetrating the prohibition of the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam, also, in this matter there is a wisdom of distinguishing between the obligatory prayer and other prayers.

Just as distinguishing between a worship and another act of worship, that is why it is recommended to hasten the breaking of the fast and delaying the Sahoor, which is the food eaten before starting the fast, and eating on the day of Eid before the prayer. Likewise, the prohibition of fasting a day or two days before Ramadan. All of this is to separate between the different types of fasting, that which is commanded and that which is recommended, and also separating between worship and other than worship. Thus, a prayer on the day of Jumma is distinguished between the prayer which Allaah obligated and did not obligate.’

[Al-Fatawa al- Kubra 2/359]

3 –   Shaykh Muhammad Nasir uddeen Al-Albaani Rahimahullaah

Shaykh Al-Albaani said:

‘Moving to another place to pray is not applied to the Sunnah prayer which is prayed before the obligatory prayer.’

[Silsilah al-Huda wa Noor no. 18]

Shaykh Al-Albaani  Rahimahullaah

The Questioner: when a person wants to pray the Sunnah prayer and moves to pray somewhere else, what is the wisdom behind this?

Shaykh: Firstly I say, as is my habit, this is how the Sunnah is, this is what is mentioned in the hadeeth in Sunnan Abu Dawood, with moving to another place to pray the optional prayer away from the obligatory prayer. It was mentioned in Saheeh Muslim with another hadeeth which is about the Jumma Prayer. When a person prays the Jumma prayer, then he does not connect the optional prayer with the obligatory prayer until he speaks or leaves that place.

As for the wisdom as you ask, then some scholars mention – and Allaah knows best – it is to increase the witnessing of goodness for him on the Day of Judgment, so every time he prays in a different place then this place will be a witness for him because he prayed two Rakah or more for the sake of Allaah -Azza wa Jal- in that place. This is what has been said, and Allaah knows best, it is possible that this wisdom is correct and possible that it is incorrect.’
