The Reward for the Optional Prayer in Makkah and Madinah
الصلاة المضاعفة في الحرم هل هي عامة في الصلوات أم في الفريضة فقط

Questioner: O Respected Shaykh as for the prayer being multiplied in the Haram [the grand Masjid of Makkah], is this for the general prayers or only for the obligatory prayers. What is your research on this?
Shaykh: my answer to this question is that it is general. Meaning that the Hadeeth of the Prophet -alayhi as-Salam:
( صلاة في مسجدي هذا بألف صلاة مما سواه من المساجد إلا المسجد الحرام )
‘Prayer in my Masjid is better than a thousand prayers in any other Masjid except Masjid al-Haram’
Therefore, prayer in the masjid al-Haraam is equivalent to a hundred thousand prayers and this Hadeeth includes the obligatory and optional prayer.
If we remember that the prayer of the woman in her home is better than praying in her masjid, then therefore, when she prays in the Masjid al-Haraam, there is no doubt that she gets the same reward multiplied like that of the multiplied reward of the men, because she has prayed in this sacred place.
However, if she prayed in her home, she gets the same reward as in a Masjid plus an increase of reward due to the virtue of praying in the house.
Like I mentioned she gets the reward of a hundred thousand prayers with an increase of at the least ten times of good deeds because good deeds are multiplied by ten and more.
This leads us to a question, is the Sunnah prayer for men – moreover for women – in the Masjid better or should it be in the home, so, if we remember the saying of the Prophet alayhi as-Salam:
( أفضل صلاة المرء في بيته إلا المكتوبة )
‘The best prayer for a man is in his house except for the obligatory prayer.’
Here we say, that the non-obligatory prayer of a man being prayed in his home in Makkah and Madinah is better than his prayer in these two Masajid.
This is because even though the prayer in these two Masajid has that virtue, the optional prayer in the home is better.
Therefore, we arrive at the previous result that a person praying the optional prayer in his home is better than his optional prayer in the Prophet’s Masjid or in the Masjid al-Haraam, – [even though the reward for the prayer being multiplied in the two Masajid, is for the general prayers.]

[T.N.] A summary: If a person does pray an optional prayer in the Masjid al-Haraam then the reward is general, however, him praying the optional prayer at home is better.

السائل : فضيلة الشيخ الصلاة المضاعفة في الحرم هل هي عامة في الصلوات أم في الفريضة فقط ما تحقيقكم في المسألة؟
الشيخ : جوابي على هذا السؤال أنها عامة أي أن قوله عليه السلام ( صلاة في مسجدي هذا بألف صلاة مما سواه من المساجد إلا المسجد الحرام ) فالصلاة فيه بمئة ألف صلاة تشمل أو يشمل هذا الحديث الفريضة والنافلة وإذا كنا مستحضرين أن صلاة المرأة في بيتها أفضل من صلاتها في مسجدها فحينئذ إذا صلت في المسجد الحرام لا شك أنه يكتب لها نفس المضاعفة التي تضاعف للرجال لأنها صلت في هذا المكان المقدس ولكنها إذا صلت في بيتها فيكتب لها نفس الأجر وزيادة فضيلة البيت كما قلت آنفا يكتب لها مئة ألف صلاة زائد على الأقل عشر حسنات لأن الحسنة بعشر فأكثر
وهذا يوصلنا إلى القول هل صلاة السنة بالنسبة للرجال فضلا عن النساء في المسجد أفضل وإلا في الدار إذا ذكرنا قوله عليه السلام ( أفضل صلاة المرء في بيته إلا المكتوبة ) نقول صلاة الرجل لغير الفريضة في مكة وفي المدينة أفضل له من صلاته في المسجدين فإذا كان الصلاة في المسجدين لها تلك الفضيلة وكان صلاته للنافلة في البيت أفضل فنخرج بالنتيجة السابقة أن صلاة الرجل للنافلة في بيته أفضل من صلاته في المسجد النبوي أو في المسجد الحرام هذا هو الجواب
