The Purpose of Creation

Allaah Ta’ala said:

وَمَا خَلَقۡتُ ٱلۡجِنَّ وَٱلۡإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُونِ

<< And I (Allaah) created not the Jinn and humans except that they should worship Me (Alone). >>[Dhariyaat: 56]

The great Imaam, Shaykh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah -RahimuhAllaah- said about this Ayaah:

Worship of Allaah is the beloved goal which is pleasing to Him for which Allaah created the creation,  as Allaah Ta’ala said : << And I (Allaah) created not the Jinn and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).>>   And with this Allaah sent all the Messengers as Nuh said to his people:

ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنۡ إِلَٰهٍ غَيۡرُهُۥٓ

<< Worship Allaah! You have no other Ilah (deity) but Him.>> [A’araf:59][1]

Ibn Qayyim  said regarding Allaah’s statement:

<< And I (Allaah) created not the Jinn and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).>> Therefore worship is the goal for which Jinn, mankind and all the creation was created.

Allaah Ta’ala said:

أَيَحۡسَبُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ أَن يُتۡرَكَ سُدًى

<< Does man think that he will be left Suda [neglected without being punished or rewarded for the obligatory duties enjoined by his Lord (Allaah) on him]? >> meaning: neglected.’[2]

Ibn Qayyim -RahimuhAllaah- also said:

‘Allaah Subhanahu informed us that the required aim of His creation is worship of Him.’[3]

Shaykh AbdurRahman as-Sa’adi -RahimuhAllaah- said:

‘This is the aim for which Allaah created the Jinn and humans and sent all the Messengers to the creation which is worship of Allaah this includes knowing Him, loving Him, (Inaabah) turning repentantly to Him, turning to Him and turning away from other than Him and that includes knowing Allaah Ta’ala, so indeed perfection of worship is dependent upon knowing Allaah, every time a slave of Allaah increases in knowing His Lord, then his worship of his Lord is more complete. Therefore, Allaah created those who are accountable for worship and He did not create them for a need for Himself from them.’[4]

Allaah Ta’ala said:

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ فِي سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٖ وَكَانَ عَرۡشُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلۡمَآءِ لِيَبۡلُوَكُمۡ أَيُّكُمۡ أَحۡسَنُ عَمَلٗاۗ

<<And He it is Who has created the heavens and the earth in six Days and His (‘Arsh) Throne was on the water, that He might try you, which of you is the best in deeds.>>[5]

Allaah Ta’ala clarified the wisdom for creation of the Heavens & Earth:

<< It is Allaah Who has created seven heavens and of the earth the like thereof (i.e. seven). His Command descends between them (heavens and earth), that you may know that Allaah has power over all things, and that Allaah surrounds (comprehends) all things in (His) Knowledge. >>[6]

Allaah Ta’ala said:

وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ لِيَجۡزِيَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَٰٓـُٔواْ بِمَا عَمِلُواْ وَيَجۡزِيَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحۡسَنُواْ بِٱلۡحُسۡنَى

<< And to Allaah belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, that He may requite those who do evil with that which they have done (i.e. punish them in Hell), and reward those who do good, with what is best (i.e. Paradise). >>[7]

The Prophet Not Having Control over Harm & Benefit

Allaah Ta’ala said:

لَيۡسَ لَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡأَمۡرِ شَيۡءٌ

<<Not for you (O Muhammad, but for Allaah) is the decision>>[8]

Allaah Ta’ala ordered the Prophet to say:

قُل لَّآ أَمۡلِكُ لِنَفۡسِي نَفۡعٗا وَلَا ضَرًّا إِلَّا مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُۚ

<<Say (O Muhammad): ‘I possess no power of benefit or hurt to myself except as Allaah wills.’ >>[9]

And

<< Say (O Muhammad): ‘I possess no power of benefit or hurt to myself except as Allaah wills. If I had the knowledge of the Ghaib (unseen), I should have secured for myself an abundance of wealth, and no evil should have touched me.>>

Not Over-Praising The Prophet

Muqbil bin Hadi al-Waadi’ee -RahimuhAllaah- said:

‘1- From Umar -Radi Allaahu anhu- who said:  I heard the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- saying:

‘Do not over praise me, like the Christians over praised the son of Maryam. Indeed I am a slave of Allaah and His Messenger.’[10]

2 – From Ibn Abbas -Radi Allaahu anhu-  who said: The Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said early in the morning on the day of ‘Aqabah while he was on his she-camel:

‘Find me some stones.’

So I looked for seven stones for the Prophet, the stones where like stones for throwing, and he began to shake them in his hand, then he said: ‘Throw stones like these.’ After that he said:

‘O you people beware of extremism, in the Deen, since extremism is what destroyed those before you.’[11]

If this is the situation regarding stones, what about other than that, from those who seek assistance from the Messenger of Allaah and other religious people.  They also perform worship of the Messenger of Allaah of that which is not permissible except for Allaah.

3 – From Muttaruf who said: that my father said: I went with the delegation of Bani ‘Aamir to the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- and we said to him: ‘You are our Sayyid (master).’

He said:

‘The Master is Allaah.’

We said: ‘You’re the best of us in excellence and the greatest of us in excellence.

So he said:

‘Say what you have to say, or some of what you have to say, and don’t let Shaytaan drag you along.’[12]

4 – From Anas bin Maalik -Radi Allaahu anhu-  that a man said: O Muhammad, the best of us, the son of the best of us, our master and the son of our master.

The Messenger of Allaah said:

‘Say what you have to say, do not let the Shaytaan pull you along, (or Shayyateen– plural, or he said one of these two).  I am Muhammad the son of Abdullaah, I am Muhammad the slave of Allaah and His Messenger.

I hate that you raise me above the status, which Allaah -Azza wa Jal- has placed me in.’[13]

Aqeedah is Based upon the Qur’aan, Sunnah and Ijma

Imam Ibn Abdul Barr RahimuhAllaah said:

‘There is nothing in all al-I’tiqaad (the Beliefs), in the Sifaat of Allaah and His Names except that of which the text has been mentioned in the Book of Allaah or that which is authentic from the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- or that which the Ummah is united upon and that which came from the Akbaar al-Ahad (singular narrations) regarding all the I’tiqaad or similar to it, is accepted and not debated.’[14]

Shaykh ul Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah RahimuhAllaah said:

“الاعتقاد لا يؤخذ عنّي، ولا عمن هو أكبر منّي، ولكن عن كتاب الله وسنة رسوله ﷺ وإجماع سلف الأمة”

‘Beliefs are not taken from me [directly] nor from one who is more senior to me but they are taken from the Book of Allaah, the Sunnah of His Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- and the Ijma of the Salaf of this Ummah.’[15]

Shaykh Albaani was asked:

‘Regarding the statement of Shaykh ul Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah –Rahimullaah Tala’a: ‘Ahl ul Bida’ hold a belief and then look for the evidence, and the Ahl ul Sunnah bring the evidence then hold a belief’?

Shaykh al-Albaani RahimuhAllaah– replied:

‘As for the Ahl-ul-Bida they follow their Bida’ then they try to establish it by looking for evidence for it, this is the meaning of following desires; this is why Ahl-ul-Sunnah are those who are far away from desires.’[16]

Shaykh al-Albaani RahimuhAllaah  also said:

‘It is not befitting to take everything which is connected to the Sharia, whether it is Aqeedah or Ebaadah or behaviour, except from the Authentic Ahadeeth.’[17]

Shaykh al-Albaani RahimuhAllaah said:

‘It is necessary to purify the weak narrations and keep them away from the Aqeedah Saheehah.’[18]

Shaykh ul Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah RahimuhAllaah said:

‘It is upon every believer not to speak about anything at all of the Deen except in following what the Messenger brought and not to precede him in anything, but rather to look into what he had said, so that a person’s statement can be following his statement and that his knowledge is following the Prophet’s command. This is how the Companions were and those who followed their path from those who followed them in goodness and the Imams of the Muslims.  This is why not one of them would reject the texts with their intellects and they would not establish a Deen with other than what the Messenger brought.

If a person wanted to know something from the Deen and to speak about it, then he would look into what Allaah and what the Messenger had said, so a person would learn from that and speak with that, he would look into that and reflect and use that as evidence and that is the principle of the Ahl ul Sunnah.

The Ahl-ul-Bida’ do not place their reliance inwardly and in the same matters upon what they received from the Messenger, but rather they take from their opinions and desires. Then if they do find a Sunnah which they agree with, they follow it, otherwise they do not care about the Sunnah because if they find that it opposes them, they turn away from it by explaining it away or interpolating it.’[19]

A False Claim

Shaykh Albaani -RahimuhAllaah- also said:

‘As for his saying at the end of the Hadeeth: ‘and if it was not for Muhammad I would not have created you.’ Then this is an important issue which is related to beliefs which cannot be affirmed except with unanimous Muttawatir (recurring) texts, or being authentic according to some others.

If it was authentic then it would have been mentioned in the Book and the Sunnah Saheehah (authentic), however on the pretense that it is authentic and in reality with an absence of a text which can be established as evidence it also negates the saying of Allaah Tabarak wa Ta’ala:

إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نَزَّلۡنَا ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَٰفِظُونَ

<<Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur’aan) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption) . >>[20]

Dhikr here includes the whole of the Sharia’, the Qur’aan and the Sunnah, as Ibn Hazm defined in ‘al-Ahkaam’.

Furthermore, Allaah Tabaraka wa Ta’ala did indeed inform us of the wisdom for which He created Adam and his offspring, Allaah –Azza wa Jal- said:

وَمَا خَلَقۡتُ ٱلۡجِنَّ وَٱلۡإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُونِ

<< And I (Allaah) created not the jinn and humans except they should worship Me (Alone). >>[21]

So, everything that opposes this wisdom or exceeds this wisdom, then it is not accepted, except with an authentic text from the infallible Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam, as is the opposition of this false Hadeeth.

What is similar to it is what has become widespread upon the tongues of the people: ‘If it were not for you, if it were not for you, I would not have created the creation’

Indeed, it is fabricated as as-Sanani said it was and Shawkaani agreed with him in ‘Fawaid al-majmoo’a fee al-Ahadeeth al-Mawdoo’a’ (p.116).

What is comical is that the false claimant to Prophet hood Mirza Ghulam Ahmad al-Qadiyani stole this fabricated Hadeeth and claimed that Allaah addressed him with this statement:

‘If it were not for you, I would not have created the creation’!!! this is something that his followers the al-Qadiyanioon affirm, here in Damascus and in other places, due to it being present in the book of their false Prophet ‘Haqeeqat ul-Wahi’ (p.99).[22]

Fabricated Hadeeth

Shaykh Albaani -RahimuhAllaah- researches the hadeeth in Silsilah Ahadeeth Da’eefah:

‘If it were not for you I would not have created the creation’

Fabricated – As was mentioned by as-Sanani in ‘al-Ahadeeth al-Mawdooa’ (p.7), as for the saying of Shaykh al-Qari[23] (p.67-68):

‘However, its meaning is correct, since ad-Daylami[24] narrated from Ibn Abbas from the Prophet: ‘Jibra’eel came to me and said: O Muhammad if it was not for you I would not have created Paradise, and if it was not for you I would not have created the Fire.’

And in the narration from Ibn ‘Aasaakir: ‘If it was not for you I would not have created the Dunyaa.’

So, I (Albaani) say:

‘To be determined in saying that its meaning is correct is not befitting except after affirming its authenticity from what he conveyed from ad-Daylami, and this is something which I have not seen anyone present this clarification of it being correct. As for me, even though I have not come across its Isnaad I certainly have no doubts to it being weak.

It is sufficient as an evidence of it being weak that ad-Daylami is the only one who conveyed it.  Then I confirmed this being weak, rather it being baseless, when I came across its chain in ‘Musnad ad-Daylami’ (1/41/2) from the way of UbaydAllaah bin Moosa al-Qurashi who said that al-Fudayl bin Jafar bin Sulayman narrated to us from AbdulSamad bin Ali bin Abdullaah bin Abbas from his father from Ibn Abbas.

I (Albaani) say: ‘As for the deficiencies of this person AbdulSamad, then al-Uqayli said: ‘his hadeeth are not preserved and he is not known for other than this hadeeth.

Then he brings another hadeeth by him about honoring those who witnessed battles, other than these I do not know of his narrations.

As for the narration of Ibn Aasaakir then Ibn al-Jawzi also collected it in ‘al-Mawdooaat’ (1/288-289) with a long hadeeth from Salman from the Prophet and said: Indeed it is Mawdoo’ (fabricated) and Suyooti affirmed that in ‘al-La’alee’ (1/272).[25]

Some Fatawa From the People of Knowledge

Shaykh AbdulAziz Bin Baz -RahimuhAllaah- was asked about this Hadeeth and he said:

‘This is conveyed from the speech of some of the common folk and they do not understand. Some of the people say that indeed the world was created due to Muhammad and if it was not for Muhammad, the world and the people would not have been created and this is falsehood which has no origin, and this speech is corrupt. Allaah created the Dunyaa so Allaah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala would be known and that He -Jala wa Ula- would be worshipped. Allaah created the creation so that He would be known by His Names and Attributes, and by His Might and knowledge. So that He would be worshipped alone who has no partners and He would be obeyed Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, not for the sake of Muhammad, or for the sake of Nuh, or Musa, or Isa nor other than them from the Prophets. Rather Allaah created the creation so that He would be worshipped alone and who has no partners.’[26]

The Lajna Daima was asked:

‘Can it be said: ‘Indeed Allaah created the heavens and the earth because of the creation of the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam.’ and what is the meaning of ‘‘If it was not for you I would not have created the creation’ does this Hadeeth have an origin?’

They replied:

‘The heavens and the earth were not created because of the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam-  but rather they were created for what Allaah Subahanu mentioned in His -Azza wa Jal- saying: << And I (Allaah) created not the Jinn and humans except they should worship Me (Alone). >>[Dhariyaat: 56] as for the aforementioned hadeeeth then it is a lie against the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- and it has no origin for authenticity.’[27]

The Lajna Daima was also asked:

‘A question was put to the Lajna Daima regarding the statement ‘ If it were not for you, I would not have created the creation’, is this hadeeth fabricated or weak?’

The Lajna answered:

‘This was mentioned by Al-‘Ajlooni (1162 A.H.) in ‘Kashf al-Khafa wa Mazzeel al-Ilbaas Amma Ishtahir min al-Ahadeeth ala alseenat an-Nass’ and he said: that As-Saghaani (650 A.H.) said: that this hadeeth is Mawdoo’ (fabricated), then he said: I say, however its meaning is correct even though it was not a hadeeth.’

We say but rather it is falsehood in wording and in meaning. Since indeed Allaah created the creation so that they worship Him as He said:

<< And I (Allaah) created not the Jinn and humans except they should worship Me (Alone). >>

There is no hadeeth established from the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- which indicates that the creation was created for him not the universe or anything else from the creation.

It was mentioned by Muhammad bin Ali ash-Shawkani in ‘Fawaid al-Majmooa fee al-Ahadeeth al-Mawdooa’ and he said: ‘As-Saghaani said it is Mawdoo’.  What indicates to this is the saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

<< It is Allaah Who has created seven heavens and of the earth the like thereof (i.e. seven). His Command descends between them (heavens and earth), that you may know that Allaah has power over all things, and that Allaah surrounds (comprehends) all things in (His) Knowledge. >>[28]

May Allaah send praise and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and his Companions.[29]

This Belief is from the Beliefs of the Shia Rafidah

Al-Aloosi -RahimuhAllaah- said:

‘There is a sect who are also called al-Ahmadeeyah, which is a sect ascribed to a man called shaykh Ahmad bin Zain ad-Deen al-Ihsaee al-Bahraani, who was born in the year 1166 A.H. and died in the year 1243 A.H..

He is a misguided old heretic, he holds opinions which are clear disbelief and renegade, and he laid down the path of opinions which cleared the way for the heretics who came after him.

As for the Shia then they glorify him, and give him frightfully great and revered titles. . . .’

The most important of his beliefs are:

1 – He claimed that Allaah – how far He is from what they say – manifested in Ali and in his eleven offspring. That they are manifestation of Allaah, and they possess divine attributes.  It is an ‘Aqeedah of al-Halool (the evil concept that the creator physically entering and uniting with the creation) which is an extension of the beliefs of the Brahmanism and the extreme Soofeeyah.

2 – The existence of this universe returns back to the existence of Imams, and that they are the effective cause in his existence, if it was not for them Allaah would not have created anything. Similarly the extremists have a famous expression of praising the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– with which the Prophet  is not pleased – : ‘If it were not for you I would not have created the creation’, which is detestable extremism from which it is obligatory to repent from.’[30]

The Misuse of Shaykh ul Islaam Ibn Taymeeya’s -RahimuhAllaah- Speech

‘There are those who, intentionally or unintentionally as the case may be, mistranslate the works of some of the great scholars who walked upon this earth, to justify their deviant ideologies. If only they accept the ‘Aqeedah of these great scholars! There is a translation and manipulation of the words of the great scholar Shaykh ul Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah regarding the issue at hand.

By referring back to the original source of the writings of Shaykh ul Islaam, research finds that certain ‘so-called academic prolific translators’ mistranslate the great works of Ibn Taymeeyah.

This manifest their ignorance of the correct understanding of the mechanics of the Arabic language and how the books of the great scholars are to be read and understood.[31]

Shaykh ul Islaam -RahimuhAllaah- said:

‘Muhammad is the leader of the sons of Adam. The best of creation and the most noble of them to Allaah. Here is where, the one who said what he said: ‘Indeed Allaah created all that exists for him, or, if it was not for him, Allaah would not have created the ‘Arsh (The Throne), or the Kursi (The Foot Stool), or the Heavens, or the earth, or the sun and the moon. However, this is not a Hadeeth from the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam-, not an authentic one or a Da’eef (weak) one. It was not conveyed by anyone of the people of knowledge of Hadeeth. Not from the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam-, rather it was not known from the Companions, rather it is unknown who is the spokesperson of this speech. It is possible to explain this correctly, like the saying of Allaah Ta’ala:

<< And has subjected to you all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth >>

And the saying of Allaah:

<< and He has made the ships to be of service to you, that they may sail through the sea by His Command; and He has made rivers (also) to be of service to you.  And He has made the sun and the moon, both constantly pursuing their courses, to be of service to you; and He has made the night and the day, to be of service to you.  And He gave you of all that you asked for, and if you count the Blessings of Allaah, never will you be able to count them. >> and there are similar Ayaat which clarify in them that Allaah created the creation

[Majmoo’ al-Fatawa 11/96-97]

Comments:

1 – Shaykh ul Islaam presents the speech of the misguided so he can refute it. He uses a very gentle technique. He does not endorse this point. This point was not from the Aqeedah of the Salaf, it was only mentioned briefly to show that it was fabricated.

2 – Shaykh ul Islaam uses a certain style of wording to show that this issue is not correct: ‘Here is where, the one who said what he said’. He uses this to show that this statement is not correct, because he was not absolute in attributing an authority to this statement.

Then he goes on to illustrate that it is not a hadeeth, nor an Athar, rather it is completely unknown, and the Deen of Islaam is based upon the revelation as it was understood by the Salaf. This issue is about the unseen of which can only be established with the revelation.

Then Shaykh ul Islaam explains how the Qur’aan actually refutes this statement, by mentioning Ayaat from the Qur’aan.

The Sufis do not correctly understand the words of Shaykh ul Islaam.

3 – After I presented to some of the people of knowledge, the interpretation of some of the misguided uneducated individuals whereby they hold this belief, they informed me that these individuals must be non-Arabs since they have not understood the Arabic language.[32]

All Praise belongs to Allaah, may His peace and blessings be upon our final Prophet Muhammad, his family, his companions and all those who follow his guidance.
