The Efforts of the Non-Muslims in Reviving the Bida of Celebrating the Prophet’s Birthday

The historian Al-Jabaruti (d. 1822 C.E.) said:
‘When Napoleon Bonaparte conquered Egypt, he tightened his grip on the Sufis and those who celebrated Mawlid (celebrating the Prophet’s birthday).
Their activities had weakened in the year 1798 (C.E.), so napoleon enquired about the Mawlid an-Nabawi!!!! And why did they not celebrate the Mawlid (celebrating the Prophet’s birthday) like they used to do?!
Shaykh al-Bakri apologised for stopping these practices, and cancelling them. Moreover they did not have finances for it.
Napoleon said, ‘this must take place!!’
He ordered three hundred French riyals for it, so it would aid them in reviving celebrating Mawlid.
Decorations were put up and candles were lit, and the French attended with the people.
They beat their drums, burnt things and used fireworks.’
The historian himself mentioned the reason why the French aided the Sufis:
‘The French gave a concession to the Sufis for this practice, due to what they saw that this is against the Sharia, and that this made the men and women to free mix, and follow their desires, and amusement and commit prohibited matters.’

قال ﺍﻟﺠﺒﺮﺗﻲ ﺭﺣﻤﻪ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ -:
« ﺃﻥّ ﻧﺎﺑﻠﻴﻮﻥ ﺑﻮﻧﺎﺑﺮﺕ ﻋﻨﺪﻣﺎ ﺍﺣﺘﻞّ ﻣﺼﺮ، ﺍﻧﻜﻤﺶ ﺍﻟﺼّﻮﻓﻴة ﻭﺃﺻﺤﺎﺏُ ﺍﻟﻤﻮﺍﻟِﺪ ، ﻭﺿﻌُﻒ ﻧﺸﺎﻃُﻬﻢ ﻭﻓﻲ ﺳﻨﺔ 1798ﻡ ،
ﺳﺄﻝ ﻗﺎﺋﺪَ ﺍﻟﻌﺴﻜﺮ ﻋﻦ ﺍﻟﻤﻮﻟﺪِ ﺍﻟﻨّﺒﻮﻱّ!!
ﻭﻟﻤﺎﺫﺍ ﻟﻢ ﻳﻌﻤﻠﻮﻩ ﻛﻌﺎﺩﺗﻬﻢ؟! ﻓﺎﻋﺘﺬﺭ ﺍﻟﺸّﻴﺦ ﺍﻟﺒﻜﺮﻱّ ﺑﺘﻮﻗّﻒ ﺍﻷﺣﻮﺍﻝ، ﻭﺗﻌﻄُّﻞ ﺍﻷﻣﻮﺭ، ﻭﺍﻧﻌﺪﺍﻡ ﺍﻟﻤﺼﺎﺭﻳﻒ.
ﻓﻘﺎﻝ ﻟﻪ ﺍﻟﻘﺎﺋﺪ : ﻻ ﺑﺪّ ﻣﻦ ﺫلك!!
ﻓﺄﻣﺮ ﻟﻪ ﺑﺜﻼﺛﻤﺎﺋﺔ ﺭﻳﺎﻝ ﻓﺮﻧﺴﻴّﺔ، ﻳﺴﺘﻌﻴﻨﻮﻥ ﺑﻬﺎ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺇﺣﻴﺎﺀ ﺍﻟﻤﻮﻟﺪ!
ﻗﺎﻝ: “ﻓﻌﻠّﻘﻮﺍ ﺣِﺒﺎﻻً ﻭﻗﻨﺎﺩﻳﻞَ، ﻭﺍﺟﺘﻤﻊ ﻣﻌﻬﻢ ﺍﻟﻔﺮﻧﺴﻴّﻮﻥ، ﻭﺩﻗُّﻮﺍ ﻃﺒﻮﻟَﻬﻢ، ﻭﺃﺣﺮﻗﻮﺍ ﺍﻟﺤﺮّﺍﻗﺎﺕ، ﻭﺃﺷﻴﺎﺀ ﺃﻣﺜﺎﻝ ﺍﻟﺼّﻮﺍﺭﻳﺦ ﺗﺼﻌﺪ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﻬﻮﺍﺀ”
ﻓﺈﻧّﻚ ﺗﺠﺪ ﺍﻟﺠﻮﺍﺏَ ﻟﺪﻯ اﻠﻤﺆﺭّﺥ ﻧﻔﺴﻪ ﻳﻘﻮﻝ ﺭحمه الله
«ﻭﺭﺧّﺺ ﺍﻟﻔﺮﺍﻧﺴﺎﻭﻳّﺔ ﺫﻟﻚ ﻟﻠﻨّﺎﺱ؛ ﻟِﻤَﺎ ﺭﺃﻭﺍ ﻓﻴﻪ ﻣﻦ: ﺍﻟﺨﺮﻭﺝ عن ﺍﻟﺸّﺮﺍﺋﻊ، ﻭﺍﺟﺘﻤﺎﻉ ﺍﻟﻨّﺴﺎﺀ ﺑﺎﻟﺮّﺟﺎﻝ، ﻭﺍﺗّﺒﺎﻉ ﺍﻟﺸّﻬﻮﺍﺕ، ﻭﺍﻟﺘّﻼﻫﻲ ﻭﻓﻌﻞ ﺍﻟﻤﺤﺮّﻣﺎﺕ».
ﺍﻟﻤﺆﺭّﺥ ﺍﻟﻤﺼﺮﻱّ ﺍﻟﻤﺸﻬﻮﺭ، ﺍﻟﺠﺒﺮﺗﻲ ﺭﺣﻤﻪ ﺍﻟﻠﻪ ﻓﻲ ” ﺗﺎﺭﻳﺦ ﻋﺠﺎﺋﺐ ﺍﻵﺛﺎﺭ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﺘّﺮﺍﺟﻢ ﻭﺍﻷﺧﺒﺎﺭ ” (2/201)ﻭﻓﻲ ﻛﺘﺎﺏ ﺁﺧﺮ ﻟﻪ “: ﻣﻈﻬﺮ ﺍﻟﺘّﻘﺪﻳﺲ ﺑﺰﻭﺍﻝ ﺩﻭﻟﺔ ﺍﻟﻔﺮﻧﺴﻴﺲ ” (صـ47).
