Some Different Ranks of Scholars

Qadi Ibn Abi Ya’la [d. 625 AH] reported with his chain of transmission back to Abbas bin Muhammad al-Duri [d. 271 AH] that he said:
“The knowledge of the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ was vastly possessed by six individuals among the Companions, RadhiAllaahu anhum: Umar bin al-Khattab, Ali bin Abi Talib, Abdullah bin Masood, Ubayy bin Ka’b, Mu’adh bin Jabal, and Zaid bin Thabit. So, these were the ranks of the great scholars.
As for the narrators, they are also six individuals: Abu Hurairah, Anas, Jabir bin Abdullaah, Abdullaah bin Umar, Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri, and Ayesha, RadhiAllaahu anhum.
As for the ranks of the authorities of historical accounts and storytelling, they are six individuals: Abdullah bin Salam, Ka’b al-Ahbar, Wahab bin Munabbih, Tawoos al-Yamani, Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar, and Muhammad bin Umar al-Waqidi.
As for the ranks of the Scholars of Tafsir, they are also six: Abdullaah bin Abbas, Sa’eed bin Jubayr, Mujahid, Qatadah, al-Dahhak bin Muzahim, and al-Suddi.
As for the ranks of the Scholars of knowledge: al-A’mash, Malik bin Anas, Abd al-Rahman bin Amr al-Awza’i, al-Thawri, Mis’ar bin Kidam, and Shu’bah.
As for the ranks of the great memorisers of Hadeeth (Huffaz), they are six individuals: Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Hanbal, Yahya bin Main, Ali bin al-Madini, Abu Zur’ah al-Razi, Muhammad bin Ismail al-Bukhari, and Muslim bin al-Hajjaj.”

بعض انواع الطبقات
القاضي ابن أبي يعلى [ت ٦٢٥] بإسناده إلى عباس بن محمد الدوري [ت ٢٧١] أنه قال:
انتهى علم أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ إلى ستة نفر، من الصحابة ﵃: عمر بن الخطاب، وعلى بن أبى طالب، وعبد الله ابن مسعود، وأبىّ بن كعب، ومعاذ بن جبل، وزيد بن ثابت. فهؤلاء طبقات الفقهاء.
وأما الرواة: فستة نفر أيضا: أبو هريرة، وأنس، وجابر بن عبد الله، وعبد الله بن عمر، وأبو سعيد الخدرى، وعائشة ﵃.
وأما طبقات أصحاب الأخبار، والقصص، فستة نفر: عبد الله بن سلام، وكعب الأحبار، ووهب بن منبّه، وطاوس اليمانى، ومحمد بن إسحاق بن يسار، ومحمد بن عمر الواقدى.
وأما طبقات التفسير: فستة أيضا: عبد الله بن عباس، وسعيد ابن جبير، ومجاهد، وقتادة، والضحاك بن مزاحم، والسّدى.
وأما طبقات خزّان العلم: فالأعمش، ومالك بن أنس، وعبد الرحمن بن عمرو الأوزاعى، والثورى، ومسعر بن كدام، وشعبة.
وأما طبقات الحفاظ. فستة نفر: أحمد بن محمد ابن حنبل، ويحيى بن معين، وعلى بن المدينى، وأبو زرعة الرازى، ومحمد بن إسماعيل البخارى، ومسلم بن الحجاج.
