Introduction to Chapter 2
Abdurrazzaq al-Abbad said:
‘This chapter is connected to the physical description of the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam. It is an extension of the previous chapter because this Prophetic Seal is a physical description of the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– which Allaah -Subhanahu wa Tala’a- placed between his shoulders.
The people of knowledge are in agreement that this Prophetic Seal is a distinguished mark and sign of his –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– Prophet hood. However, they differ, was he –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– born with it or it appeared afterwards? What is apparent is what has been mentioned from chains of narration and proofs that this Prophetic Seal occurred along with the event of when the Prophet’s heart was opened up. This is when Jibra’eel came and opened up the Prophet’s chest and washed his heart and in that event the Prophetic Seal was stamped between the Prophet’s shoulders –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam.’
The Shaykh continues:
‘This Prophetic Seal had been mentioned as a characteristic of the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– in the previous books. The people of the Book knew about this from what they researched in those books, that this was a sign of his –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– Prophet hood.
It is mentioned that when Salman –radiAllaahu anhu- heard about the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– he came requesting this sign and was concerned with seeing it.’[1]
Hadeeth No.14 – Like a Quail’s Egg
as-Sa’ib binYazeed said:
‘My aunt (mother’s sister) took me to the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– and said O Messenger of Allaah! Indeed, my nephew has an illness.’
So, the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– stroked my head, made Dua’ for me to be blessed, made Wudu and I drank from the water with which he performed Wudu. I stood behind him and I looked at the Prophetic Seal between his shoulders and it was like a quail’s egg.’
[Tirmidhi, Bukhari, Muslim. Mukhtasir ash-Shamail al-Muhammadiyyah – Albaani Saheeh p.30]
[nephew has an illness]
AbdurRazzaq al-Abbad said:
‘In some of the narrator in ‘Saheeh al-Bukhari’ she mentions: ‘O Messenger of Allaah, indeed my nephew fell over.’ …… Hafidh Ibn Hajr -Rahimuhullaah- said: ‘He had a pain in his leg as is mentioned in another narration.’ [Fath 6/562][2]
[made Dua’ for me to be blessed]
AbdurRazzaq al-Abbad said:
‘Allaah answered the Dua’ of the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– for as-Sa’ib to be blessed. It is mentioned in some of the narrations of the hadeeth in Saheeh al-Bukhari from al-Ju’aid bin AbdurRahman that he said: ‘I saw as-Sa’ib bin Yazeed while he was of ninety-four years of age. His skin was young looking. As-Sa’ib said: I came to know why I was not blessed with my hearing and sight except due to the Dua’ of the Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam. Indeed, my aunt (mother’s sister) took me to the Messenger and said: O Messenger of Allaah indeed my nephew suffers, make Dua’ to Allaah.’
As-Sa’ib said:
‘The Messenger –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– made Dua’ for me.’
AbdurRazzaq al-Abbad said:
as-Sa’ib was the last Companion to die in Madinah, he died in the year 91 A.H. and he was ninety-six years old.’[3]
[I drank from the water with which he performed Wudu]
AbdurRazzaq al-Abbad said:
‘That is the water which touched his noble body –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam. This is a type of Tabarruk [seeking blessings], so seeking blessings from the Prophet’s saliva –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam, his hair and the water from his Wudu is true as indicated by the proofs.[4]
The Prophet used to make Dua for his Companions
The Messenger’s -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- supplication for Anas -Radi Allaahu anhu
Shaykh Muhammad Nasir uddeen al-Albaani quoted a hadeeth:
From Qatada who said: I heard Anas saying: I heard Umm Sulaym who said:
‘O Messenger of Allaah! Make Dua’ to Allaah for Anas’
The Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:
اللهم أكثر ماله وولده وبارك له فيما رزقته
‘O Allaah increase his wealth and offspring and bless him in what you have provided for him.’
Collected by Bukhari and Tirmidhi
From Thaabit, from Anas bin Malik that the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- came to Umm Haraam and she brought him some dates and margarine but the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:
‘Return this to its container and the other to its jug, since I am fasting.’
Then he stood and led us in a two Rakah optional prayer and Umm Haraam and Umm Sulaym stood behind us. He made me stand on his righthand side – and according to Thaabit – Anas continued: He led us in an optional prayer on a mat. When he finished his prayer, Umm Sulaym said: I have a specific request, make Dua’ to Allaah for your young servant Anas.
The Messenger -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- never left anything of good from the Duniya and the Hereafter except that he supplicated it for me, then he -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:
اللهم أكثر ماله وولده وبارك له فيه
‘O Allaah increase his wealth and offspring and bless it for him.’
Anas said:
‘My daughter informed me that I had been provided with some ninety-odd offspring from my loins. There was not a man from amongst the Ansaar who had more wealth than me, then Anas said: ‘O Thaabit, I do not own any gold or silver except for my ring.’
Collected by Abu Dawood, I say that this Isnaad is Saheeh upon the conditions of Muslim. It is also collected by Ahmad & Muslim.
In the narration of Ahmad:
‘Then the Messenger –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– supplicated for Umm Sulaym and her family.’
And the narrator mentions:
‘Anas mentioned that his eldest daughter Ameenah informed him that there were more than one hundred and twenty from his offspring buried when Hajjaj appeared.’
Albaani said: that this Isnad of three narrators is authentic upon the conditions of Bukhari & Muslim.’
Al-Albaani Commented:
‘From the benefits of the hadeeth and its Fiqh:
There are many benefits in this hadeeth, I will mention some of them briefly, except where detail is necessary:
1- That supplicating for increase in wealth and offspring is something which is legislated.
Bukhari has a chapter heading for this hadeeth: ‘Chapter: Supplicating for blessings in having lots of wealth and offspring.’
2- And that wealth and offspring are a blessing and goodness if Allaah -Tabaraka wa Ta’ala is obeyed in respect to them. How misguided is the one who tries to limit how many children they have, using so many different means, like birth control or regulating it, let alone aborting the foetus and for the most insignificant reasons, and obtaining Fatawa to make their actions permissible! !
3- Allaah answered the Dua’ of His Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– for Anas, and it became reality, until he became the one with the most wealth and offspring from amongst the Ansar.[5]
Hadeeth No. 15 – Like a Pigeon’s Egg
From Jabir bin Samarah who said:
‘I saw the Prophetic Seal between the shoulders of the Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– a red growth like a pigeon’s egg.’
[Tirmidhi, Muslim & Tabarani Mukhtasir ash-Shamail al-Muhammadiyyah – Saheeh Albaani p.30]
[Red growth]
Shaykh Albaani said:
‘A piece of flesh. The point of it being red in colour does not negate what is mentioned in the narration of Muslim that it was the same colour as his body. The similarity with a pigeon’s egg is in the size, and it has been said the similarity is in the form and colour.’[6]
Hadeeth No. 16 – Kissing the Prophetic Seal
From Aasim bin Umar bin Qatadah from his grandmother Rumaytha who said:
‘I heard the Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– say, [and if I wanted to I could have kissed the Prophetic Seal which was between his shoulders, because of my closeness to him then I would have done so,] about Sa’ad bin Mu’adh on the day that he died:
‘The Arsh of ar-Rahman shook for him.’
[Tirmidhi, Bukhari, Mulim, Ibn Majah Mukhtasir ash-Shamail al-Muhammadiyyah – Saheeh – Albaani p.31]
[‘The Arsh (Throne) of ar-Rahman shook for him.’]
AbdurRazzaq al-Abbad said:
‘The Arsh of ar-Rahman shook for the death of Sa’ad bin Mu’adh. This is a great excellence for Sa’ad and a status of high level for this noble Companion -radiAllaahu anhu, whereby for his death this great creation shook, this creation which is the greatest creation of Allaah -Azza wa Jal- the largest and widest.
Allaah Subhanahu described it in the Qur’aan with it being al-Arsh al-Atheem (the great Arsh), with it being al-Arsh al-Kareem (the noble Arsh) and with being al-Arsh al-Majeed (Majestic) meaning expansive and widespread.
It is the ceiling of all the creation, the highest and the most raised. This is why it is mentioned in the hadeeth that the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said: ‘If you ask of Allaah then ask for Firdaus, since it is the centre of Paradise and the highest of Paradise, and above it is the Arsh of ar-Rahman.’[7]
What has also been mentioned from the Ahadeeth in explaining the greatness of the Arsh and it being huge is what has been narrated by Abu Dharr –Radhi Allaahu anhu– from the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– that he said: ‘The like of the seven heavens and the seven earths in comparison to the Kursi is but the like of a ring thrown into a wide-open desert. The excellence of the ‘Arsh to that of the Kursi is like the excellence of that wide-open desert to that of the ring.’[8]
This means that all the seven heavens in relation to the Kursi are like a small piece thrown into the desert, and the Kursi in relation to the Arsh is like this.’[9]
Hadeeth No. 17 – Clump of Hair
Abu Zayed ‘Amr bin Akhttaba al-Ansari said: the Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– said to me:
‘O Abu Zayed, come closer to me and touch my back.’
So I touched his back and my fingers felt the Prophetic Seal.
The narrator from ‘Amr asked him: ‘And what was the Seal?’
He said: ‘A clump of hair.’
[Collected by Ahmad, Ibn Sa’ad, Ibn Hibban & Albaani said Its Isnaad is authentic upon the conditions of Muslim – Mukhtasir ash-Shamail al-Muhammadiyyah p.31]
[A clump of hair]
AbdurRazzaq al-Abbad said:
‘Amr mentioned this in relation to what his hand felt. The Seal was a piece of flesh which was protruding about the size of an egg and around it was hairs. So, his hand felt those hairs, therefore, the Seal is not just hairs, so there is no conflict between this and what preceded.’[10]
AbdurRazzaq al-Abbad said:
‘A Benefit: It is present in ‘al-Musnad’ by Imam Ahmad -Rahimullaah- with a sound chain from Abu Zayed Amr al-Ansari –Radhi Allaahu anhu– that he said: The Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– said to me come closer. Then he touched my head and beard, then the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– said: ‘O Allaah give him beauty and make his beauty continuous.’
The Messenger –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– made Dua for him with this blessed supplication. ‘Amr lived until over one hundred years of age and he did not have a white hair on his head and beard except very little. He had a happy face and he did not have wrinkles which occur on the faces of people of old age, but rather his face remained upon its beauty with the blessings of the supplication of the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– until he died.
This is a great, blessed, simple supplication which can be attained even in our time for the one who Allaah -Azza wa Jal- has been generous to, with the Sunnah of the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– and his noble Ahadeeth, this is by memorising them, understanding them, acting upon them and inviting to them.
It is authentically reported from the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– that he said in al-Khayf in Mina: ‘May Allaah illuminate the person who hears my statement, understands and memorises it and conveys it as he heard it.’
This supplication from the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– is for everyone who has a concern with the Prophet’s Sunnah, memorising it, understanding it, and calling to it, in that Allaah illuminates his face. It is a continuous supplication, therefore, whoever wants to be successful with this blessed supplication in anytime period, in any generation, then he must have a concern with the Ahadeeth of the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam, memorising them, reviewing them, acting upon them, and calling to them.
Sufyaan bin Uyainya said: ‘There is no-one who seeks Hadeeth except that in his face there is illumination.’ [Khateeb – Sharaf As-haab al-Hadeeth].[11]
Buriadah said:
‘Salman al-Farsi came to the Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– when he reached Madinah and he brought him a table spread with moist dates upon it and he placed it in front of the Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– so the Messenger –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– said: ‘O Salman what is this?’
He answered: ‘This is charity for you and your Companions.’
The Prophet said: ‘Take it away, indeed we do not eat from charity.’
Buriadah mentions: Salman took it away and he came the next day similarly and placed it in front of the Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– and the Messenger –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– said:
‘What is this O Salman?’
He answered: ‘This is a gift for you.’
So the Messenger –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– said to his Companions: ‘Go ahead and eat.’
Then Salman looked at the Seal upon the back of the Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– and believed in the Prophet.
Salman was owned by the Jews, so the Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– bought him with a certain amount of Dirham and that he would plant a certain amount of date trees in exchange for his freedom, Salman would take care of them until they produced fruit.
The Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– planted the date trees except for one which Umar planted. The following year the date trees which the Prophet planted produced fruit but one date tree did not. The Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– asked: ‘What is wrong with this date tree?’ Umar said: ‘O Messenger of Allaah, I planted it.’
The Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– pulled it out and replanted it and in the following year it produced fruit.’
[Collected by Ahmad, Ibn Hibban, al-Hakim & Albaani said its Isnad is Hasan – Mukhtasir ash-Shamail al-Muhammadiyyah p.31]
[Salman al-Farsi]
Shaykh Albaani said:
‘His ascription is to Persia and he is a noble Companion. Some monks had informed him about the appearance of the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– in the Hijaz area. They described him with some signs which were, the acceptance of gifts, the rejection of accepting charity and the Prophetic Seal. He liked to find about it and he did so, then he accepted Islaam.’[12]
AbdurRazzaq al-Abbad said:
‘It is mentioned in some narrators that he had to plant two hundred or three hundred date trees. The Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– ordered his Companions to help Salman. They began helping him with the date palm shoots, one person took ten, another five and the Prophet –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– hastened to plant the date palm shoot with his own hand striving to free Salman al-Farsi –Radhi Allaahu anhu.’[13]
Hadeeth No. 19 – Raised Flesh
From Abu Nadrah al-‘Uqee who said that I asked Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri about the Seal of the Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam? Meaning the Prophetic Seal so he said:
( كان في ظهره بضعة ناشزة )
‘There was on the Prophet’s back a piece of raised flesh.’
[Mukhtasir ash-Shamail al-Muhammadiyyah p.19 and Albaani graded it Hasan and its Isnad is Jayyid. In Silsilah Saheehah no. 2093 he declared it to have a Saheeh Isnaad.]
AbdurRazzaq al-Abbad said:
‘The previous narrations indicate that it was between his shoulders and that it was closer to his left shoulder.’[14]
Hadeeth No. 20 – Sparrow’s Egg
From Abdullaah bin Sarjuss who said:
‘I came to the Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam– while he was amongst people who were his Companions. I went around behind him so he understood what I wanted and he uncovered his top garment from his back and I saw the place of the Seal upon his shoulders like a clump with some darkness around it like a sparrow’s egg. So I returned back until I was facing him and said: May Allaah forgive you O Messenger of Allaah.
The Messenger of Allaah said: ‘And you.’
The people said: ‘He sought forgiveness for you Messenger of Allaah –sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam.’
The Messenger said : ‘Yes and for you.’ Then he recited the Ayaah:
{ واستغفر لذنبك وللمؤمنين والمؤمنات }
《and ask forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women.》[15]
[Collected by Muslim and Albaani said it was Saheeh in Mukhtasir ash-Shamail al-Muhammadiyyah p.33 ]
AbdurRazzaq al-Abbad said:
‘What has been mentioned by the Companions regarding the description of the size of the Seal is very similar. Every narrator mentioned it in accordance with as they saw it and described it. One of them said ‘it was like a quail’s egg’, another said: ‘like an egg’, a third said: ‘like a piece of flesh’ and a fourth said: ‘like a clenched fist’.[16]
