A series on issues regarding sending the Salat and the Salam upon the Prophet.

After Hearing the Adhan

From Abdullaah bin ‘Amr that he heard the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam saying:

‘When you hear the Mu’adhin (the caller to the prayer), say the like of what he says and send Salat upon me. Whoever sends Salat upon me once, Allaah sends Salat upon that person ten-fold.  Then ask Allaah for my intercession since it is a status in Paradise which is only deserving for a slave of Allaah, and I hope that I am that slave. So whoever asks Allaah for my intercession then the intercession will be made permissible for him.’[1]

Al-Albaani said commenting on this Hadeeth:

‘In this Hadeeth, there are three Sunnan which many people are negligent of:

Responding to the Mu’adhin, Salat upon the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam after responding to the Mu’adhin, then asking Allaah for the Prophet’s intercession sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam.

What is strange is that you see some of those who are negligent with these Sunnan are the most biased, who adhere to the Bida’ of the Mu’adhin raising his voice with sending Salat upon him sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam at the end of the Adhan, even though there is an agreement that this action is a Bida’.

If they were doing this for the love of the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam then why do they not follow him in these Sunnan, and leave off that Bida’?

We ask Allaah for guidance.’[2]

What is said after hearing the Adhan

Bukhari collected in his ‘Saheeh’ from Jabir bin Abdullaah -RadiAllaahu anhuma- who said the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘Whoever says, when he hears the call to the prayer: ‘Allaahumma Rabbi Hadihee ad-Da’wati at-Taamati, wa as-Salati al-Qaa’imati, Aati Muhammadan al-Waseelata wal Fadeelata, wab’ath-hu Maqaaman Mahmoodan alladhi wa ‘adtahu’[3] my intercession will be allowed for him on the Day of Judgement.’

Issue does the Mu’adhin Himself send Salat upon the Prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam after Calling the Adhan

Al-Haafidh Ibn Rajab says:

‘As for the words of the Messenger sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam, ‘When you hear the Mu’addhin,’ the apparent wording of the hadeeth indicates the distinction between the listener and the Mu’addhin, so the Mu’addhin is not included in it.’[4]

Shaykh Muhammad Nasir uddeen al-Albaani says:

‘The hadeeth is addressing those who hear the Mu’adhin and have been ordered to respond to what he says. The command does not apply to the Mu’adhin himself, otherwise it would mean that he would have to respond to his own Adhan. There is nobody who holds this opinion and whoever says this, than that is a Bida’ in the Deen.’[5]

Sending Salat When Someone Hears the Iqaama

Questioner: Regarding the Dua’ for the Adhan . . . . is it allowed for the Iqaama?

Shaykh Albaani: This is what is apparent from the statement of the Prophet -alayhi as-Salam: ‘When you hear the Mu’adhin then say the same as he says . . . .’ to the end of the Hadeeth.

The Prophet placed the Iqaama like the Adhan in the Hadeeth its authenticity is well-known: ‘Between every two Adhans is a prayer for the one whoever wishes.’

Therefore, the Iqaama is like the Adhan and the rulings of the Adhan apply to it, including saying what the Mu’adhin says, seeking the Waseelah (intercession) of the Messenger -alayhi as-Salam- and sending Salat upon him sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam.’[6]

The Supplication after the Adhan:

Bukhari collected in his ‘Saheeh’ from Jabir bin Abdullaah -RadiAllaahu anhuma- who said the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- said:

‘Whoever says, when he hears the call to the prayer:

‘Allaahumma Rabbi Hadihee ad-Da’wati at-Taamati, wa as-Salati al-Qaa’imati, Aati Muhammadan al-Waseelata wal Fadeelata, wab’ath-hu Maqaaman Mahmoodan alladhi wa ‘adtahu’ then my intercession becomes allowed for him on the Day of Judgement.’

[2] From  ‘Fadl as-Salat ala Nabi sallAllaahu alayhi wa Salam‘ (p.49) (Footnote 1)]

[3] ‘O Allaah the Lord of this perfect call, and this established prayer, give Muhammad the intercession and an excellence, and give him that that special status of intercession which you have promised him.’
