1 – What to say when one hears Thunder
From Ibn Abbas who used to say when hearing the sound of Thunder:
“سبحان الذي سبحت له“
‘Far is He removed from imperfection for Him being glorified.’
Subhan alathi Subihut lahu
Ibn Abbas would say:
“إن الرعد ملك ينعق بالغيث، كما ينعق الراعي بغنمه“.
‘Indeed thunder is an Angel which croaks with the rain, just like a shepherd croaks with his sheep. ‘

2 – What is Thunder?
From Ibn Abbas who said:
أقبلت يهود إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقالت: أخبرنا ما هذا الرعد؟
The Jews turned to the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- and said: ‘Tell us what is thunder?’
The Prophet said:
ملك من ملائكة الله موكل بالسحاب، بيده مخراق من نار، يزجر به السحاب، يسوقه حيث أمره الله
‘It is an Angel from the Angels of Allaah who has been given duty of the clouds. In his hand is a sword made of fire with which he holds back the clouds, he leads the clouds wherever Allaah orders him to.’
They asked so what is this sound of Thunder?
He -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- replied:
” صوته “
‘It is his voice.’
They said: ‘You have spoken the truth.’
