Ease and Delight of the Heart is due to the remembrance of Allaah

Allaah Ta’ala said:

<< Is he whose heart, Allaah has opened to Islaam, so that he is in light from His Lord (same as he who is non-Muslim)? So, woe to those whose hearts are hardened against remembrance of Allaah! They are in plain error! >> [Zumar: 22]

Allaah Ta’ala said:

<< And whomsoever Allaah wills to guide, He opens his heart to Islaam, and whomsoever He wills to send astray, He makes his heart closed and constricted, as if he is climbing up to the sky. >> [al-Anaam: 125]

Shamsuddeen Muhammad bin Abee Bakr Ibn Qayyim aj-Jawzeeyah (d.751 A.H.) -Rahimullaah- said:

‘From the means of ease and delight for the heart, is: continuous remembrance of Allaah in all circumstances, and in every place. Dhikr has an amazing effect in giving ease to the heart, and pleasure to the heart.  Negligence has a strange effect on making the heart constrained, imprisoning it and punishing it.’

Ibn Qayyim aj-Jawzeeyah -Rahimullaah- also said:

‘From the greatest means for the constraint of the heart is: Turning away from Allaah Ta’ala, and attaching the heart to other than Him. Being negligent of His remembrance, and loving other than Him, since whoever loved something other than Allaah then he is punished with that thing. His heart is imprisoned in loving that other thing. So there is none in this world who is more wretched than him, and none more in a gloomier situation, nor a more miserable survival, nor any one with a more tired / sick heart.’

[From: ‘Zaad al-Ma’ad’ by Ibn Qayyim aj-Jawzeeyah 2/25]

Ibn Qayyim aj-Jawzeeyah -Rahimullaah- also said:

‘There is no doubt that the heart becomes rusty just like brass and silver and other things become rusty, and it becomes bright and illuminated with Dhikr. It becomes so bright until it is a shiny mirror, therefore if the heart is left then it becomes rusty and if it remembers Allaah it becomes illuminated.

The heart becomes rusty due to two matters: due to negligence and sins, and it becomes illuminated with two things: with seeking forgiveness and Dhikr.’

[From ‘al-Waabil as-Sayib’ by Ibn Qayyim aj-Jawzeeyah p.56]
