Calling with Wisdom

A questioner asks: ‘If our Shaykh, Shaykh Rabee could be so kind as to explain the statement of Allaah Ta’ala:
﴿ادْعُ إِلِى سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ وَجَادِلْهُم بِالَّتِي هِيَ احسن ﴾
《 Invite (mankind, O Muhammad) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Quran) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better 》 [Nahl: 125]
The Answer:
In the Name of Allaah the most kind the most Merciful
Praise be to Allaah and praise and security be upon the Messenger of Allaah, upon his family, his Companions and whoever follows the guidance.
Allaah -Tabaraka wa Ta’ala – sent Messengers, the best of mankind, the highest in status, and the best of them in lineages. Allaah chose them to call their nations to the Tawheed of Allaah – Tabaraka wa Ta’ala – and they used to invite to Allaah -Tabaraka wa Ta’ala – with wisdom and good admonition.
Wisdom: is knowledge, so the caller with knowledge, proof, and evidence is a caller to Allaah with wisdom and good admonition.
The Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- was the greatest of people with manners and the highest of them in knowledge and wisdom.
Therefore, he invited to Allaah – Tabaraka wa Ta’ala – in Makkah and Madinah with proofs and evidence and was the most firmly stable of all the people.
Along with that, this wisdom and good admonition to the people of misguidance from the idolaters and people of Bida were of no use, so the Messengers of Allaah had to sometimes resort to using strength.
The people mocked Nuh -alayhi as-Salam- while he was building the ship.
﴿ قَالَ إِن تَسْخَرُوا مِنَّا فَإِنَّا نَسْخَرُ مِنكُمْ كَمَا تَسْخَرُونَ ﴾
《He said: “If you mock at us, so do we mock at you likewise for your mocking. 》[11 :38]
He invited them to Allaah for nine hundred and fifty years night and day, secretly and in the open, with evidence, and clear unequivocal proofs. Along with that, the people persisted in committing Shirk with Allaah and disbelieving in Him, worshipping idols, so Nuh was forced to make Dua against them, Allaah said:
﴿ وَقَالَ نُوحٌ رَّبِّ لَا تَذَرْ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ دَيَّارًا﴿﴾ إِنَّكَ إِن تَذَرْهُمْ يُضِلُّوا عِبَادَكَ وَلَا يَلِدُوا إِلَّا فَاجِرًا كَفَّارًا ﴾
《 And Nuh said: “My Lord! Leave not one of the disbelievers on the earth! “If You leave them, they will mislead Your slaves, and they will beget none but wicked disbelievers.”》 [Nuh : 26-27]
He made Dua against them, so Allaah -Tabaraka wa Ta’ala – destroyed them, He destroyed them with a storm. Allaah said about these evil people:
﴿ وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ﴾
《 And the people of Nuh aforetime, verily, they were more unjust and more rebellious and transgressing [in disobeying Allah and His Messenger Nuh] 》[Najm:52]
How patient was Nuh with them and their lies, while they mocked and belittled him.
﴿ وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا نُوحِي إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا أَنَا فَاعْبُدُونِ ﴾
《 And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad) but We inspired him (saying): La ilaha illa Ana [none has the right to be worshipped but I (Allaah)], so worship Me (Alone and none else).” 》 [Anbiya : 25]
Whilst the Prophets were giving Dawa to Allaah and to Tawheed, there were next to them cowards, evil people mocking them.
﴿وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن نَّبِيٍّ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ ﴾
《 And never did a Prophet come to them except that they used to mock him. 》 43:7
The noble Messenger -who is from the noble Messengers -alayhim As-Salat wa Sallam- was forced to use harshness with them.
A Da’ee (caller) is forced to invite to his Lord with wisdom and good admonition. However, he faces circumstances where he is compelled to say something harsh and speak with harshness -May Allaah bless you – when the Salafi speaks with harshness he always calls to Allaah with wisdom and good admonition.
However, when he is harsh during some circumstances, the people wipe away his efforts, all his patience, his gentleness, his wisdom; they bury all that completely and make it apparent that he is severe and harsh
– may Allaah bless you – harshness is needed sometimes.
﴿ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ جَاهِدِ الْكُفَّارَ وَالْمُنَافِقِينَ وَاغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَمَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ ﴾
《O Prophet! Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be severe against them, their abode will be Hell, and worst indeed is that destination.》 [Tahrim: 9]
May Allaah bless you- Allaah -Subhanahu wa Ta’ala- called the Prophet to be severe with Allaah’s enemies from the disbelievers and hypocrites; why?
The Prophet called them, and called them, and called them with gentleness and wisdom until nothing remained except the extremely sharp sword and tongue and conclusive action.
I presume that the questioner -and Allaah knows best- has noticed that we have been harsh in our speech and so he has asked this question to invite us to wisdom and Allaah knows best.
May Allaah guide the one who leaves off the methodology of the Prophets -alayhim As-Salat wa Sallam- and the methodology of the Salaf as-Salih.
The Companions would be harsh when the need would arise, be gentle, then perhaps would be harsh. May Allaah bless you – when you read about the Salaf as-Salih about some of their writings, you perhaps find they have harshness.
Hamad bin Abee Salamah used to be harsh and firm upon the people of Bida and misguidance, and this was regarded as a virtue. This harshness was a virtue.
The Imams of Islaam, the likes of Ahmad bin Hanbal and others would place him as a scale against the people of falsehood, and they would measure the people of falsehood by him.
‘If you heard a man criticise and attack Hamad bin Salamah, then suspect his Islaam.’
They placed the Imams of Islaam as scales for distinction between Ahl ul Sunnah and people of misguidance.
We ask Allaah that He grants us and yourselves wisdom – wisdom is knowledge – and Dawa to Allaah with gentleness and wisdom.
This is beautiful patience; then when a person uses harshness, he should not be blamed when facing the people of falsehood.
We ask Allaah to give us and you success in the Deen. Indeed our Lord Hears the Dua.’

الجواب :
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم، الحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله وعلى آله وصحبه ومن اتبع هداه، الله-تبارك وتعالى- أرسل الرسل أفضل البشر أعلاهم منزلة وأفضلهم أنسابًا، اختارهم لدعوة أمَمِهم إلى توحيد الله -تبارك الله تعالى- وكانُوا يدعون إلى الله -تبارك وتعالى- بالحكمة والموعظة الحسنة.
الحِكمة: هِي العِلم، فالدّاعي بالعلم والحُجّة والبرهان دَاعٍ إلى الله بالحِكمة، والموعظةِ الحَسنة،
ورسول الله – صلَّى الله عليه وسلّم- أعظم النّاس أخلَاقًا وأعلَاهم عِلمًا وحِكمة -عليه الصّلاة والسّلام- وقد دعا إلى الله -تبارك وتعالى- في مكّة والمدينة بالحُجَّة والبُرهان وهو أرسخُ النّاس -عليه الصّلاة والسّلام-ومع ذلك لا تُجدي هذه الحِكمة والموعظة الحسنَة عند أهل الضلال من الوثنين، وأهل البدَع فيلجَأ رسُل الله أحيانًا إلى القوة سخِروا من نُوح -عليه الصّلاة والسّلام- وهو يصنع الفُلك ﴿ قَالَ إِن تَسْخَرُوا مِنَّا فَإِنَّا نَسْخَرُ مِنكُمْ كَمَا تَسْخَرُونَ ﴾ ودعاهم إلى الله ألفَ سنَة إلّا خمسين عامًا ليلًا ونهارًا، وسِرًّا وجِهارَا، بالحُجَج والبَراهِينِ الوَاضِحَة والقاطِعَة ومع ذلك يُصرُون على الشِركِ بالله والكُفر به وعبادة الأوثان فاضطُرَّ نُوح أن يدعُو عليهم قال: ﴿ وَقَالَ نُوحٌ رَّبِّ لَا تَذَرْ عَلَى الْأَرْضِ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ دَيَّارًا﴿٢٦﴾ إِنَّكَ إِن تَذَرْهُمْ يُضِلُّوا عِبَادَكَ وَلَا يَلِدُوا إِلَّا فَاجِرًا كَفَّارًا ﴾ فدعى عليهم فأَهلكهُم الله -تباركَ وتعالى- أَهلكَهُم بالطُّوفان، وقال الله فِيهُم الخُبثاء: ﴿ وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰ﴾ كم صَبِر علَيهِم نُوح وعلى كذبهم يسخَرُون منه ﴿ وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا نُوحِي إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا أَنَا فَاعْبُدُونِ ﴾ بجانبهم الجبناء الخُبثاء في دعوتهم إلى الله وإلى التّوحِيد بالسُّخرية وكذلك ﴿وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن نَّبِيٍّ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ ﴾ فيضطَّر حينئِذِ الرّسُول الكريم من الرُّسُل الكِرام -عليهم الصَّلاة والسلام- أن يشتدَّ عليهم والرّسول -عليهِ الصلاة والسّلام-كمَا قال الشّاعِر:
دعَا المُصطَفى دهرًا بِمكَّة لم يُجب *** وقد جانَا مِنهُ جانِبٌ وخِطابُ
فلَمَّا دَعَا والسَّيفُ سلطٌ بِكفِّهِ *** لهُ أسلَمُوا واستَسلَمُوا وأنَابوا.
وقد يضطَّر الدَّاعية يَدعُو إلى ربِهِ بالحكمة والموعظة الحسنة لكن يواجه مواقف تضطرُّه إلى أن يقول بشِّدة ويتكَلَّم بشِّدة -بارك الله فِيك- وإذا تكَلَّم بِشِدَّة السّلفي دعا إلى الله بالحكمة والمَوعظةِ الحسنَةِ دهرًا ثمَّ اشتدَّ في بعضِ المُناسبات مسَحُوا كُلَّ جهوده هذه وصبرهُ وحلمَهُ وحِكمَتَهُ دفَنُوها تمامًا وأظهروا أنَّه مُتَشدِّد -بارك الله فيكم- الشِّدة في بعضِ الأَحيان مطلُوبة: ﴿ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ جَاهِدِ الْكُفَّارَ وَالْمُنَافِقِينَ وَاغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَمَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ ﴾ بارك الله فيكم الله -سبحانه وتعالى- دَعَاه إلى أن يشتَدَّ على أعدائِه من الكُفَّارِ والمُنَافقين لمَاذا؟ دعاهُم، ودعاهُم، ودعَاهُم باللِّينِ والحِكمَة فمَا بقِي إلّا السّيف واللِّسانُ الصَّارِم والعمَل الحَاسِم، وانَا أظُنُّ أنَّ السّائِل والله أعلم رآنا أننا نأخذ الكلَام بِشِدة، فسأل هذا السُّؤال يدعونا إلى الحِكمَة، والله أعلم، هَداهُ الله تَارِك منهجَ الأنبياء -عليهم الصَّلاة والسّلام- ومنهجَ السّلف الصّالح، الصحابة كانوا قد يشتَّدون إذا دعت الحاجة إلى ذلك، يلينون، ثم قد يشتدون -بارك الله فيك-، وإذا قرأت للسلف الصالح في بعض ما كتبوه قد ترى عندهم شدَّة، وكان حمَّاد بن أبي سلمة شديدًا على أهل البدع والضلال،فكانت مزيَّة،هذه الشدة مزيَّة من مزاياها، وكان أئمة الإسلام مثل أحمد بن حنبل وغيرُه يجعلونه مقياسا لأهل الباطل، يميزونه به أهل الباطل “ إذا سمعتَ الرجل يطعن في حمَّاد بن سلمة فاتهمه على الإسلام”، وجعلوا من أئمة الإسلام مقاييس فارقة بين أهل السنة وبين أهل الضلال، نسأل الله أن يرزقنا وإياكم الحكمة، فالحكمة هي العلم، والدعوة إلى الله باللطف، والحكمة وهذا الصبر الجميل ثمَّ عند الشدة لا يُلام إذا اشتد الإنسان في مواجهة أهل الباطل، نسأل الله أن يوفقنا وإياكم في دينِه، إن ربنا سميعُ الدعاء
