Question:
Does the reward for reading the Qur’aan and different types of righteous deeds reach the deceased? Whether it is done from his children or others?
The Answer:
‘It is not established from the Prophet – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- as far as we know that he read the Qur’aan and granted the reward for it to the dead from his close relatives or other than them.
If the reward reached them then the Prophet would have great concern for that deed, and would have explained it to his Ummah, so that they could benefit their dead. Indeed, the Messenger – alayhi as-Salat wa Salam- was full of pity, kind and merciful for the believers.
The rightly guided Khulafah after him and the rest of his Companions -RadhiAllaahu anhum- were upon his guidance regarding this. We do not know of any single one from them granting the reward for the Qur’aan to someone else.
All goodness is in following the guidance of the Messenger – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- and the guidance of the rightly-guided Khulafah and the rest of the Companions -RadhiAllaahu anhum.
All evil is in following Bida’ (religious innovations) and newly innovated practises, due to the warning of the Prophet – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- from that due to his saying:
‘Beware of newly invented matters in religion, every newly invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is misguidance.’
Also his saying:
‘Whoever innovates something in this matter of ours that which is not of it, then it will be rejected.’
Therefore, based upon this it is not allowed to read the Qur’aan for the deceased, and the reward for this reading does not reach him, in fact that is a Bida’.
As for other deeds which bring a person closer to Allaah, then whatever the authentic evidences show that the reward reaches the deceased then it becomes obligatory to accept it, like giving charity on behalf of the deceased, doing Dua for him, performing Hajj for him.
Therefore, for that which has no evidence in establishing it, then it is not legislated until there is evidence for it.
Concluding, it is not allowed to read the Qur’aan for the deceased and the reward for this reading does not reach him in accordance with the most correct of the statements of the scholars, in fact it is a Bida’.’
